Title: Really special question - this is 64bit capable right?
Post by: A Twig on October 25, 2009, 07:13:15 PM
Here's my system info, I'm confused as I have 64bit processor but only 32bit Windows installed? But I should be fine with 64bit windows 7 right?

I've got an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.6Mhz with 2 Gig of RAM.

64 bit windows should work for you just fine.

Especially worth it if you have more than 3gb of ram in your machine, since 3gb is the max 32 bit windows can handle. (please correct me if I am wrong).

32 bit Windows will run on a 32 bit or 64 bit CPU, 64 bit will only run on a 64 bit CPU. You have a 64 bit CPU, you'll be fine.

I would be inclined to up your RAM if you're planning on going to Windows 7 though. My system uses 1.6GB just with Windows and MSN running.

Conversely, if you're NOT planning to add more RAM, I'd just stick with 32bit windows.  The ability to handle 4GB+ of RAM is the main benefit that makes 64bit worthwhile and there is still the odd case of software/driver incompatibility with 64bit windows.
