Post by: TeaLeaf on November 14, 2009, 11:41:36 AM
According to the developer the game will launch on 2nd February 2010 in the US and on 5th February in Europe.

Closed Beta is currently underway.  These videos are not new, some go back to the previous developer, but they give a good idea of what is due to come our way next year.

Apparently it's not great. I asked his what is bad and he replied:

"animations... interface... plot devices... intuitivity"

He's usually pretty spot on when it comes to opinions with games, I don't think this will be something I'll look into any more. Maybe The Old Republic will be better.

Seems as theres already a thread for the game (a bit old but it's there)

I've been playing this the last week since it's now gone f2p & it's on steam, it's alright as it goes, reminds me of the battlestar jobbie, but seems more polished.

I've had a play over the last few days and it does seem to cover all the areas where BSG is lacking.

Missions and a storyline, both single and teamplay.
Fleet operations are huge PvE missions and can be fun.
Free ships on promotion (at least I got one at lvl10).
Crafting seems to be rife, but I've not done any of that since the tutorial.
Hourly special events to get extra rewards.

And you can start a Klingon character once you reach a certain level in Star Fleet, to stop everyone joining as Klingon I suppose.

BSG wins hands down for space combat and beauty, but it's only skin deep, this has what we wanted on the depth side and the combat is still good.

Their payment model is based on buying Cryptic points to buy special ships and items, although you can buy these Cryptic's  with lots of dilithium, when the 'exchange' is available. But standard ships and such seem to be available with in game resources, energy and dilithium.

I'm enjoying it so far and I like that I can not play and not think I've lost a days subscription.

Well I'd love to spend the day flying around the galaxy but unfortunately the sun is out so I need to get out into the garden and do some work!

Just gotta check my crew first though, make sure none of those sneaky DOFFs are skiving off!

I have a lvl50 Science Officer on Federation - Liberator in the U.S.S Wibble
and a lvl50 Klingon Tactical Officer - Kaplunk in the "Cuddly Bear".

I picked suitably fear inspiring names for my Klingon ships, I particularly liked the "Fluffy Bunny".

You get to execute your DOFFs for incompetence on Klingon.

I've been sending my spare cadres to Sn00ks.

Things have definitely got harder since they fixed the Jem'Hadar shield issue.

Still very wary about free to play MMO's. BSGO while lots of fun socially still leaves a bad taste. Tell me this isn't another bait and switch game, fun now but broken later when you refuse to whip out the credit card? I'm not criticising STO just unsure.

Both me & Lib have played through to max level on Star Fleet side & from what I can see you gain/lose nothing from not going Gold, it's even possible to convert ingame stuff (Dilithium) into store credits using the ingame exchange.

Btw, re gold.  Just buy an old copy of the game, preferably deluxe/gold/ce/digital ce and you'll get the goodies and 1 month free gold ;)

There's a new KDF mission coming this Thursday.

http://www.startrekonline.com/node/3041

QuoteAlpha

Qapla', Warriors!
Great news from the House of Cryptic has arrived today. Starting this Thursday, April 5, Klingon warriors will have access to a new episode titled “Alpha.” This KDF-only mission has been designed for level-34 Captains and takes place in Romulan space in the Orith system.
Located in the Hyralan Sector of the Psi Velorum Sector Block, the Orith system is dominated by Orith Prime, a large hydrogen-helium gas giant with significant amounts of chlorine and sulfur in its atmosphere. In close orbit with Orith Prime is Orith II, a small M-Class planet covered in jungles and thick vegetation. Empire scientists say that the atmosphere on Orith II is not hazardous, although they speculate that the influence of the gas giant has led to unusual aberrations in the planet's ecosystem.
Intelligence reports indicate that Nausicaan pirates have taken up residence in clusters of asteroids drawn into orbit by Orith Prime's massive gravity well. Captains in the region are advised to use caution when exploring the region.
“Alpha” contains brand-new environments where adventure, encounters and challenges will be found around every corner â€" there are hidden areas to discover on the map, so take your time to explore thoroughly while on Orith II’s surface.
This new episode also features voiceover and new rewards. Players who complete "Alpha" will be able to choose one of the following rewards:
Hirogen Tetryon Blast Rifle: A ground weapon with a fairly fast and strong bolt for its primary fire, but its secondary power is a small-radius explosion.
Klingon Intelligence Stealth Utility Armor: A set of physical enhancement utility armor that provides a bonus to all stealth and perception powers. Equip it to enhance your personal cloak or Shroud or to increase your ability to see enemies using stealth technology.
Also, Alpha features variations on how the story unfolds, but there is no right or wrong answer â€" the choices you make during the episode will allow you to play your KDF character as a ruthless pragmatist or an honorable warrior.
Today is a good day to die, warriors! Glory to the Empire!
We’ll see you in-game this Thursday for the release of “Alpha.”

Sneaky, try re-installing/updating the vga drivers.

Also load the launcher, go to options and select force verify.

Selecting disable on demand patching will also help to significantly reduce loading times(downloads everything).

Any level 50s interested in some elite stfs?

Also, all are welcome to join the fleets I'm in, just drop a message.  If you're planning to create one, it ain't worth it when there's an option available> Fleet bank tabs come at 1.4mill creds each.

I downloaded it through Steam and logged in Ok. After an hour it's clear this games not for me. Apart from some terrible connection issues and load screen bugs which may well be local to me it looks like a fun game but not something I'd want to spend any time with. It was nice to be able to try the game out for free though. Have fun.

Whatever the connection problems were Smilo, they didn't seem to be effecting anyone else today. No idea what it could be for you.

It's the same as BSG when you move between areas for the first time, it has to download that area. The annoying thing is that it calls it "Patching", it's not really, it's downloading content. I suppose they called it patching because it's updating files that you don't have.

Also, have a word with Oldie before deciding to run away, he came in today for the first time and appears impressed and is already lvl 3 after a few hours play.

Get past the introduction mission, set up some basic options and your you keys ,after talking with us, and it's plain sailing.

Don't think that because we've been playing at lvl 50 for a few weeks that there's nothing in it for us to come join a mission with you at lvl 2.

The rewards from a completed mission are specific to your level, although the rewards during the mission are at the level of the commanding character.

So during a mission with me at 50 and you at 2 inviting me to play, I'll get lvl 2 rewards during the fighting/problem solving, but at the end of the mission I'll be given a lvl 50 item. Also, any level specific stuff I pick up, I can email to you in game for your pleasure.

Oh yeah, every game episode you play is repeatable over and over, so when you reach CAP at 50, you can go back and replay the good missions at that level and get a better reward.

The latest "Special Series" which was called "The 2800" has been bolted onto the end of an existing DS9 series to become a normal episode run. Game content it being updated all the time with events and specials.

Although the model has obviously changed to one that supports people buying credits, it's not overly so. I've bought some game credits by earning Dilithium over the weeks and been able to get credits to buy 2 new character slots and a character 'respec' token to rebalance my first character.

It really is what BSG should have been, structure wise. BSG's space combat was a lot nicer, but it lost it's appeal after lvl 25. It was so damn repetitive on the dailies. The dailies are a lot more diverse and fun on STO and, even better, you can share them with friends and play at the same level as them for the same rewards on most missions.

It's still a subscriber game that's had to adapt to a F2P model and it shows, where BSG was all money driven, this seems (for the moment) to still be game first, money incentive later.

By the way, Rizzy knows the technical stuff, I'm just muddling through and gibing structural advice.

Give STO another chance when you have a better connection and someone to walk through it with you. No money required.

That is worth reading again and what impressed me so much last night. I really enjoy the team stuff and this allows me to jump on and play with friends of differing levels and be appropriately rewarded.

To eliminate this, go into the launcher options and disable on demand patching.

Once you click ok, the launcher will download everything at once, with the result being that the "patching" isn't done in game.

If anyone needs help with game mechanics/tricks/builds and whatnot; ask and you will be answered.  Level 50 in ~1.5-3 days is also possible (starting from scratch).

If you look in the launcher options you'll see disable on demand patching, tick that fella & off you go, but don't try it if you've not got a bit of spare time as it'll dl all the rest of the game - which is like the total universe man - which is pretty big.

basically a build planner so you can have a mess about without screwing things up ingame &

http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/share.php

is other peoples builds ideas, some of them are crap, but they'll give you an idea of whats what with your builds.

for e.g.

is the build for my Star Fleet Tac officer.

Riz, in order to be effective as an escort in STFs (endgame content) you need to change your build quite a bit.

First, you need to switch from beams to dual heavy cannons.  Ex:

Weapons: (As for energy type either disruptors or tetryon, then once you get enough rare borg salvage/encrypted data chips switch to antiproton)
Fore 3x DHCs + Harg'Peng Torp or 4x DHCs
Aft 3x Turrets

Consoles:
Tac: 4x X energy damage(same type)
Engi: 1 of each: Neutronium Alloy (http://www.stowiki.org/Console_-_Engineering_-_Neutronium_Alloy), Ablative Hull Armor (http://www.stowiki.org/Console_-_Engineering_-_Ablative_Hull_Armor), Tetraburnium Hull Armor (http://www.stowiki.org/Console_-_Engineering_-_Tetraburnium_Hull_Armor) (pref XI rare or XII common, unless you can afford better)
Sci: 1x Console - Universal - Assimilated Module (http://www.stowiki.org/Console_-_Universal_-_Assimilated_Module)
(from Assimilated episode), 1x
Field Generator (http://www.stowiki.org/Console_-_Engineering_-_Field_Generator)
XI (rare ~1mil from AH or craft it) or better
Boff skills:

Tac comm: Tactical team 1, pattern beta, cannon spread, pattern omega 3
Tac lt comm: Tac team 1, pattern beta, cannon spread or fire

Engi lt: emergency power to shield 1, reverse shield polarity 1
Engi es: empts1 ^

Sci lt: Hazard emitters 1 or transfer shield strength1, hazard emitters 2

Your personal skills also need some modifications, i'll see about copying my fleet escort build into that calculator tomorrow.

I havn't gone anywhere near STF's yet so no need to worry about about it too much for the time being.

I don't see the point in having the same skill multiple times on the BoFFs as you've put there, as they'd share cool down times wouldn't they?

Quote from: RizZy;348232I don't see the point in having the same skill multiple times on the BoFFs as you've put there, as they'd share cool down times wouldn't they?

They share the cooldown, however they last x amount of settings, which by the time the benefit wear off the next one will be available to use.

Look at it this way, epts1 have a 45 sec cd, you pop the first one, after 30 seconds you can use the other one, and you keep doing this for the whole duration of the stf - in rotation.
Tac team will increase weapon damage and auto assign shield power to the side which is being attacked
epts will give you a shield heal on all sides and reduces shield damage by x% for x seconds
hazard em will give you a hull HoT and also remove certain hazards (plasma DoT is one of them - borg use plasma with the odd antiproton shot(usually gateways))
ap beta will debuff the target with less damage resistance = more damage

reverse shield polarity is your oh c**p button, pop it and balance shields (click in middle) and all your shields will regenerate to full (if you are under heavy attack)  it is also the only way to survive "invisible torpedoes"(super beams) which deal around 80k damage < no way of knowing when it will hit, but if you have revpol on and suddenly all your shields spike to full in an instant, you should have been dead.

Do keep in mind that ANY boff skill which has Team in it (tactical, engineering, science) share the same cd. < same thing applies to any emergency power to whatever skills.

P.S, you can start doing normal STF @ lvl 45 - you can do it with whatever gear you have handy; it's easy.
Once you have optimised your build and know what to do, you can move on to elites - uncommon stuff is fine as long as you know exactly what to do.

If you want, I can show you the ropes on my fed main < fleet escort as well.

It brings you in gradually and unlocks extra bits and pieces as you get to the higher levels. But you aren't bound by anything or have to do everything there is to do.

Take "Crafting" I never touched it until after I got to the lvl50 cap. But the tutorials and first few missions are all about getting you into the game and playing as easily as possible. Once you've played a few missions you'll have some questions that most of us can answer on TS.

For those of us who got the 30 day Gold access, it looks like we will lose the energy limit back down to 10 millions and some features we don't use or haven't actually seen working, when the 30 days expire.

This thread (http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=246741) includes comments from the Cryptic Devs and pretty much says we keep everything we have to that point, inventory and bank space etc.

I kept the 1billion EC cap after my gold time expired.

So leave it at around 10.1mill and see how it goes.

I don't know if I'm reading that right or not, but it sys the attack was in December 2010?

If that's the case then I think most of us should be safe as we've only just started playing a few months back.

Well, my 30 day Gold Membership expired last week and I've kept everything I got from it, except for the 1 Billion EC limit, that took a few days to report back that it had dropped back to 10 mil.

So my £7 Digital Deluxe key got me

900 Cryptics
An extra character
1 respec token for each char when I got to lvl's 10,20,30,40,45.50
10 Bridge officer slots
106 Bank slots at lvl 50
72 Inventory slots at lvl 50

And for chars I'd already levelled to 50, I got the inventory increase and BO slots retrospectively.

Nice find. While I do like the game I think the Devs might have over complicated the weapon variables a bit. I'm not familiar with the Star Trek lore but I imagine they went for authenticity over simplicity. I'm still not certain about how to 'build' a type of character ship in the game. For example I'm engineering and have tried where possible to pick armour, damage mitigation, shields etc in a tank spec. I've also gone for more DOT (damage over time for you non MMO'ers) and slow but harder damage types. I'm working on the assumption that as an armoured class I can simply outlast my enemy and wear them down.

Then again if in doubt I always refer to Liber-rizzy-pedia.co.uk
