OK, so here's the challenge:
- On 31st August we set up a team for this forum to participate in the distributed computing project known as Folding@Home.
- Folding@Home is a research project that hopes to solve medical conditions such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Parkinson's disease and many others.
- Our team is called 'Deadmen Folding' and was originally ranked 33,597th in the world folding team rankings.
- Since 31st August we have folded for 19,248 points and are climbing the world rankings rapidly.
- We have over 45 computers running the folding client for our team.
- Deadmen Folding is now ranked 647th in the world and aim to be a top 100 team.
- We are currently folding at a rate of 10,420 points per week.
- By 00:00hrs on 1st October I want Deadmen Folding to have achieved 32,000 points.
Now we get to the bit where you come in.
We need your help. We don't care if you are in dMw or not, we just want your spare CPU cycles.
While you are reading this post your CPU could be undertaking medical research and crunching some numbers for the F@H project.
It doesn't lag your computer (I still run the folding client whilst playing CS for example) and it only steals CPU cycles that you are not using.
So that's the challenge. Join our folding team!
- You can read about Folding here (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/)
- You can download the small software package needed here (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=2833).
- You can find out how to fold even faster by implementing these flags (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=2993).
- Join Deadmen Folding now :D
PRIZE: If we reach the target by 00:00hrs on 1st October I'll donate a decent prize for the person judged by Oldbloke and myself as making the most worthy contribution to the team between now and then (Oldie & I will not enter the competition ourselves).
So why not join our team? And get other people's computers running the software for us too (known as borging - think Star Trek and assimilation). Even if you only have one computer yourself, how many people do you know who you could ask to fold for us? Remember, to get the points for the work done by their computer then just make sure that you enter your own name and our team number (33597) when you install the software. You'll then appear on our team page (http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=33597) and our statistics page (http://statsman.ww-testsites.co.uk/folding2stats/html/33597.html)
Help medical research and help Deadmen Folding reach 33,000 points by joining Team 33597 today!
TL.
Starting statistics attached as a pdf file.
Joined the team. Got a question though: does it automatically start up with your computer or do you have to start it up yourself?
k i hope i did it right.
If so i'm also on :narnar:
Borged my Shuttle now ... WUs up! (no pun intended) :P

If you have installed the graphical client then it will put itself into the startup menu and will therefore start automatically when the machine boots.
Thanks for joining - can we get more [CIGS] on the team? :D
TL.
I'll ask them 4 ya.
Did it allready. Hope you'll win it.
aye im in, my nans got Alzheimer's and anything that can make her remember who i actually am will do for me :D
Welcome aboard Danimo - fold away :D
TL.
And welcomed i am :) ty mate
Come on folks, we are looking like we are going to miss the target by about 4 days at the moment (you can check the graph here (http://statsman.ww-testsites.co.uk/folding2stats/html/33597.html)).
We need more peeps folding - post here to confirm you're giving it a go and download the client now! :D
TL.
BTW, we have moved up to 622nd in the world rankings
Way to go peeps! :worship:
TL.
My work boxes have been 'neutered'. :(
...and I've not found a solution to get round the problem for you yet Oldie :(
Unless.........unless of course you can borg all of your mates' home machines and get them folding for us too :D
Come on peeps, if Oldie's army of borged machines has been reduced in size due to a block being put on F@H servers then we need to replace those WUs that we thought we would be getting over the next week or so. Any volunteers?
TL.
Woot! Chimpboy has said he'll start folding for us......but a certain other person is ignoring me so far........no names......not yet....... :D

Well i downloaded this crap thing and it says 'Working' at the bottom of the screen so i presume i'm actually doing something. Yes the screen keeps flicking this red and blue coloured ball thing around. W/U progress 0/500, is that a big one?
This might keep me amused when the WON servers go down and my Steam still refuses to work. I think NOT.

The 500 ones are medium to medium small. The 2500 ones are big :)
You can turn the gfx things off if you want - go to the config options and uncheck all the gfx options, select pref for Folding@Home in the client type and then just keep and eye on it every now and then to make sure you are processing. When you have done your first WU, check the queue to check it has been sent back. If it hasn't then toggle the 'use IE settings' box to see if that helps.
Welcome to the team JB :D
TL.
Tryed using it @ work but somehow couldn't damn, then it would be nice and quick. Soz, I've tried, even asked the systemmanager.
Welcome Dan, ask the othe rBritish lads aswell m8 (Chris and RVN and so).
Quick question - when I close down my comp should I pause the little blighter or just leave it to resume when I boot back up?
first let it pause otherwise you lost the thing he did in that time your pc was on.

In most instances it will restart at the last checkpoint. However in the early days I did lose a WU when a shut down a machine running the graphical client. I have never lost a WU with the console client - even if you shut the window you see the pause work instruction flash up in the window before it shuts down.

Squonk's Folding

Just joined up on my main machine had a few probs before with it but gonna give it a go on this machine.

Processing a frame can take only a few minutes, but most take between 10 and 30 minutes to process. Hence a complete WU can take a day or days to complete as there are many frames in a WU.
If you have the small cog in your system tray then you're probably already folding. To check, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and look in your Task Manager under the processes tab. Click twice on the header for the CPU column and it will order the programs depending upon the percentage of processor time being used. The FAHCore_78 (or 65) should show somewhere right up near the top. For example, whilst typing this email the FAHCore is using 97% of my processor clock cycles.
Hope this helps! And welcome to the team :)

Working on the p734_abeta21-43-amb and im only at 1 percent caus some1 closed down comp when i went to work :(
Looks as though it's all sorted. Got a User Name, Team No33597, Working on p542_BBA5_ext, WU. progress 130/500 (26%) and in the log_02 SSEboost ok. Also in the file manager FahCore_78_exe CPU 98. Nearly forgot have the nice picture. Thanks TL :D
Folks - looking at the stats, Oldie's proxy problems at work seem to have led to a drop off of about 2000 folding points per week. We need to replace that real quick! We are currently on target to hit 32,000 points on about 3rd or 4th October, not the 1st, so get out there and borg more machines - and if you're not folding with us then please join us now.

Just got me spare computer out its started now its on a 400 WU might take a while. This computer has so far done 33 WU (26%) of its 125. Is there any way to change what you want to dl or does it just do what it wants to?

I answered this in Smilo's thread in the Folding section. If it is an AMD just make sure you are runnign the client with the -forceasm -advmethods flags. Folds faster and for more points that way.
TL.
Set my second machine to work. It looks as though it is doing the same one I completed this morning p542_BBA5_ext ? but if we get points for it OK. :lmfao:
Did you just copy over the F@H directory by any chance?
Main machine 45%(57WU)
Second machine 7%(27WU)
Both going but gonna take a while :(
Quote
Did you just copy over the F@H directory by any chance? No did a new install
You quite often get the same project, maybe even the same WU as they send the same WU out more than once to get some validation of the result. However a project like the one mentioned can have hundreds of different WUs - one WU will only ever look at a very small part of that particular project, so don't worry about getting the same protein to work on again! If you check the team score page and click on say Oldbloke you'll find in the lower half of the list that he has folded over 25 WUs for some projects!

Hi Grim - thanx for joining up - I look forward to welcoming you to the squad properly when your first WU completes and registers on our team score!
As for the steam , wassup dude - post something in the 1.6 section to explain and let's see if we can't help get it to work.......
TL.
Just borged the ex girlfriends machine to add to the collective. It's only a pII so won't be very fast.
so your x still lets u near her PC????
And why shouldn't she??
The split was amicable and we are still good friends. Besides someone has to fix it for her when she breaks it!!!
Yeah Grim if you need an install disc sent matey just say and you'll likely have 10 but sunrise on Monday ;) .
Folding, well errr, I ws 280/500 last night his this morning I am 0/500, I lost the WU totally which is weird since I have never had any problems so far. I think I'll pause before closing down in future.
tnks for the disc alb but i hav already got it if u lok in th 1.6 forum ive done a post of all my wo's with 1.6
Should complete 2 projects tomorrow :0 one 400 WU and a 120 :)

im due to finish 2 2500's by the end of the day. would have been quicker but for some reason when the screen saver comes on it halts it....didnt realise this until i looked in the logs after i noticed the percentage hadnt changed for a couple of hours. Does anyone else get this problem?
No.
:)
The borging of my hall is underway, watch this space ;)
smite, F@H is very well behaved and runs as the lowest priority. If you have a screen saver then it WILL take CPU time away from F@H.
Up and running... I think? :D
Welcome to the team Ninja! You'll get your mention in the folding topic when your first WU is credited :D
TL.
Yay my first WU done :D
I think Folding is crashing my PC.. :( I've had 3 complete lock-ups since installation.. Am I missing some setup of sorts?
Is your machine overclocked? An unstable hardware system will tend to crash the folding software. If you are having problems it may be indicative of an as yet undisclosed hardware problem, but you're the first member of these forums to report crashes as far as I am aware......and a lot of people are using this worldwide! What exactly is happening?
TL.
Playing CS... then complete lock-up. Not sure if it's trying to send info back and forth and taking all the bandwidth or not...
I'm adjusting the CPU usage % to see if it has any affect. Lowered it down to 20 and things seem OK.. bumping back up to 50% and I'll let you know if I have any further problems.
System is not overclocked (yet).
Also, happened when playing Jedi Academy
I have to say that AFAIAA I do not get any cpu-induced spikes through running F@H. I have tried it with and without the client running and can't tell the difference! I have to say that it soulds like there is some other problem lurking elsewhere in the system - I wouldn't concentrate too much on the F@H client, too many people run it and this problem is nto at all typical or well reported. If it caused this sort of problem then I'm sure we would know about it. You have to remember it was specifically written to avoid this kind of thing.......
Sorry not to be of more help. :(
TL.
You people play cs while running the F@H client? Does it not affect performance then, cos i've been turning mine off all the time when i wanted to do anything.
JB, if I was playing in a match then yeah, I'd bet on the safe side and turn it off, but other than this I have never turned F@H off - and I can discern no noticeable difference in performance whatsoever - that's the way it is written - it will only ever use CPU cycles that are *not* being used by you for something else.
TL.
Ahh thats a question i was going to ask, ill leave it on all the time now.
:D :D me finished my first one today :narnar:

Congratz Menno. I'll talk to you on MSN. GJ!
3rd WU in the next few minutes :D
Oh yeah, we missed the target! We all knew it at the time, but I just realised I never actually posted up a formal - 'we lost' notice! Never mind. next time..
TL.
I've left my old Athlon 500 folding for the last 4 days now, it uploaded the latest version while I was still getting to grips with it and assigning ports to the firewall, but seems to be going through 25,000 steps every hour and twenty minutes on a Redhat 9.1 system.
Is this normal or should I be using some other flags.
The new version seems to be a bit better at scanning the system.
I wanna get on the stats! :(
Building a new system for my brother for xmas, may have to burn it in doing folding!
Budget means I can only put a 2500+ athlon in after buyinh quality MB and TFT, but I should be able to get a few WU under its belt b4 he wants it!
:D
My Amd 2400+ is floding 25k steps every 20 minutes or sligtly faster if you dedeicate it as above all other tasks. Tl wrote a section were you can make the program think your pc has a faster processor therefore making it fold faster but you will have to look around in the folding section im going to sleep....
