Title: An Open Challenge!
Post by: TeaLeaf on September 22, 2003, 06:26:20 PM
OK, so here's the challenge:Now we get to the bit where you come in.  We need your help.
We don't care if you are in dMw or not, we just want your spare CPU cycles.
While you are reading this post your CPU could be undertaking medical research and crunching some numbers for the F@H project.
It doesn't lag your computer (I still run the folding client whilst playing CS for example) and it only steals CPU cycles that you are not using.

So that's the challenge.  Join our folding team!  PRIZE:  If we reach the target by 00:00hrs on 1st October I'll donate a decent prize for the person judged by Oldbloke and myself as making the most worthy contribution to the team between now and then (Oldie & I will not enter the competition ourselves).

So why not join our team?  And get other people's computers running the software for us too (known as borging - think Star Trek and assimilation).  Even if you only have one computer yourself, how many people do you know who you could ask to fold for us?  Remember, to get the points for the work done by their computer then just make sure that you enter your own name and our team number (33597) when you install the software.  You'll then appear on our team page (http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=33597) and our statistics page (http://statsman.ww-testsites.co.uk/folding2stats/html/33597.html)

Help medical research and help Deadmen Folding reach 33,000 points by joining Team 33597 today!

If you have installed the graphical client then it will put itself into the startup menu and will therefore start automatically when the machine boots.

Thanks for joining - can we get more [CIGS] on the team?  :D

...and I've not found a solution to get round the problem for you yet Oldie  :(

Unless.........unless of course you can borg all of your mates' home machines and get them folding for us too  :D

Come on peeps, if Oldie's army of borged machines has been reduced in size due to a block being put on F@H servers then we need to replace those WUs that we thought we would be getting over the next week or so.  Any volunteers?

Well i downloaded this crap thing and it says 'Working' at the bottom of the screen so i presume i'm actually doing something.  Yes the screen keeps flicking this red and blue coloured ball thing around. W/U progress 0/500, is that a big one?

This might keep me amused when the WON servers go down and my Steam still refuses to work.  I think NOT.

The 500 ones are medium to medium small.  The 2500 ones are big :)

You can turn the gfx things off if you want - go to the config options and uncheck all the gfx options, select pref for Folding@Home in the client type and then just keep and eye on it every now and then to make sure you are processing.  When you have done your first WU, check the queue to check it has been sent back.  If it hasn't then toggle the 'use IE settings' box to see if that helps.

Welcome to the team JB  :D

Quick question - when I close down my comp should I pause the little blighter or just leave it to resume when I boot back up?

first let it pause otherwise you lost the thing he did in that time your pc was on.

In most instances it will restart at the last checkpoint.  However in the early days I did lose a WU when a shut down a machine running the graphical client.  I have never lost a WU with the console client - even if you shut the window you see the pause work instruction flash up in the window before it shuts down.

Processing a frame can take only a few minutes, but most take between 10 and 30 minutes to process.  Hence a complete WU can take a day or days to complete as there are many frames in a WU.

If you have the small cog in your system tray then you're probably already folding.  To check, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and look in your Task Manager under the processes tab.  Click twice on the header for the CPU column and it will order the programs depending upon the percentage of processor time being used.  The FAHCore_78 (or 65) should show somewhere right up near the top.  For example, whilst typing this email the FAHCore is using 97% of my processor clock cycles.

Hope this helps!  And welcome to the team :)

Folks - looking at the stats, Oldie's proxy problems at work seem to have led to a drop off of about 2000 folding points per week.  We need to replace that real quick!  We are currently on target to hit 32,000 points on about 3rd or 4th October, not the 1st, so get out there and borg more machines - and if you're not folding with us then please join us now.

I answered this in Smilo's thread in the Folding section.  If it is an AMD just make sure you are runnign the client with the -forceasm -advmethods flags.  Folds faster and for more points that way.

You quite often get the same project, maybe even the same WU as they send the same WU out more than once to get some validation of the result.  However a project like the one mentioned can have hundreds of different WUs - one WU will only ever look at a very small part of that particular project, so don't worry about getting the same protein to work on again!  If you check the team score page and click on say Oldbloke you'll find in the lower half of the list that he has folded over 25 WUs for some projects!

smite, F@H is very well behaved and runs as the lowest priority.  If you have a screen saver then it WILL take CPU time away from F@H.

Title: An Open Challenge!
Post by: TeaLeaf on September 29, 2003, 10:49:45 PM
Is your machine overclocked?  An unstable hardware system will tend to crash the folding software.  If you are having problems it may be indicative of an as yet undisclosed hardware problem, but you're the first member of these forums to report crashes as far as I am aware......and a lot of people are  using this worldwide!  What exactly is happening?

Playing CS... then complete lock-up. Not sure if it's trying to send info back and forth and taking all the bandwidth or not...

I'm adjusting the CPU usage % to see if it has any affect. Lowered it down to 20 and things seem OK.. bumping back up to 50% and I'll let you know if I have any further problems.

System is not overclocked (yet).

Also, happened when playing Jedi Academy

I have to say that AFAIAA I do not get any cpu-induced spikes through running F@H.  I have tried it with and without the client running and can't tell the difference!  I have to say that it soulds like there is some other problem lurking elsewhere in the system - I wouldn't concentrate too much on the F@H client, too many people run it and this problem is nto at all typical or well reported.  If it caused this sort of problem then I'm sure we would know about it.  You have to remember it was specifically written to avoid this kind of thing.......

Sorry not to be of more help.  :(

You people play cs while running the F@H client?  Does it not affect performance then, cos i've been turning mine off all the time when i wanted to do anything.
Title: An Open Challenge!
Post by: TeaLeaf on September 30, 2003, 06:53:52 PM
JB, if I was playing in a match then yeah, I'd bet on the safe side and turn it off, but other than this I have never turned F@H off - and I can discern no noticeable difference in performance whatsoever - that's the way it is written - it will only ever use CPU cycles that are *not* being used by you for something else.

I've left my old Athlon 500 folding for the last 4 days now, it uploaded the latest version while I was still getting to grips with it and assigning ports to the firewall, but seems to be going through 25,000 steps every hour and twenty minutes on a Redhat 9.1 system.

Is this normal or should I be using some other flags.

The new version seems to be a bit better at scanning the system.

I wanna get on the stats!   :(

Building a new system for my brother for xmas, may have to burn it in doing folding!

Budget means I can only put a 2500+ athlon in after buyinh quality MB and TFT, but I should be able to get a few WU under its belt b4 he wants it!
