Title: Irish Maths
Post by: DannagE on December 17, 2009, 04:27:50 PM
Someone sent this to my works address, made me giggle.

:D

Paddy wants a job, but the foreman won't hire him until he passes a
little maths test.

Here is your first question, the foreman said.  "Without using
numbers, represent the number 9."

"Without numbers?"  Paddy says? "Dat's easy." And proceeds to draw
three trees..

"What's this?" the boss asks.

"Have you no brain?  Tree and tree plus tree makes 9" says Paddy.

"Fair enough," says the boss.  "Here's your second question.  Use
the same rules, but this time the number is 99."

Paddy stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that
he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree.. "Ere ye go."

The boss scratches his head and says, "How on earth do you get that
to represent 99?"

"Each of them trees is dirty now.  So, it's dirty tree, and dirty
tree, plus dirty tree.  Dat makes 99.."

The boss is getting worried that he's going to actually have to hire
Paddy, so he says, "All right, last question.  Same rules again, but
represent the number 100."

Paddy stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture
again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says,
"Ere ye go..  One hundred."

The boss looks at the attempt.  "You must be nuts if you think that
represents a hundred!"

Paddy leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree
and whispers, "A little dog came along and pooped by each tree.

So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and
dirty tree and a turd, which makes ONE HUNDRED!"

Paddy is the new supervisor.

I have to ask, why is this thread in Compost Corner?  We have a 'You might be Taliban' thread going in Live yet an Irish joke thread is composted.  What did I miss?

No idea. T'wasn't me :)

I did umm and ahh a bit about the Taliban one but as it was from Forces serving there I let it lie. Happy to pull it as needed - it is pretty close to the mark.

It's racist so I binned it. I didn't see the Taliban one so I can't comment. I assume that anything that mocks or ridicules a race, culture or religion is not welcome on the forum.

Does that mean all the blond jokes need to go as well?

I think removing threads like this is going too far on the PC scale but that's just my opinion.

Does this mean Pen can't slag me off for being Scottish at the next LAN?

We run into that old chestnut we've discussed before about our legal status as publishers of the forum.

I try to keep on top of the legal side of all this and who has been sued by whome and for what. There are regular accounts of Irish Jokes causing problems on forums with various groups issuing demands for posts to be removed. We only need one Irish forum member to take exception and we'd be in trouble.

The problem is wher to draw a line. Obviously racist jokes are out but what's a racist joke? Which groups do we allow and which do we ban? It's a minefield.

You don't see 'Paddy Jokes' on the TV anymore so I guess you shouldn't see them on this forum. While I agree it's overly PC and it's doubtful anyone would have had a problem with this joke, we need to draw the line. I'd argue it's better to say no jokes about race, religion, culture, sex or sexual preferences at all than start to draw up some list of what's OK and what's not.

Surely not. That's one of the main reasons I come along. Besides, I only take the pee out of the people I like and would take it in the manner it's given :)

On re-reading the Taliban one, I'm pulling it. Some of them are amusing but some are pretty offensive. If we're trying to keep it clean.....

It is a tough line though.... if we're pulling Irish Jokes do we pull things like

'Where do Essex girls go shopping?'............ NEXT.
Or
'Why do Essex girls buy their underwear from C&A?'......... so they know which way round they go.

I think it's really a case of common sense I guess.

Can you not 'disclaim' and entire portion of the forum then apply the common sense?

Like I say -  a minefield. The simplest thing is either to ignore it all and just delete anything that is clearly overtly racists (in which case this joke should go back into the main forum - less all these comments perhapse) or to compost anything that makes jokes about race, culture, religion or sexual orientation regardless. This would be safest but we might be turning ourselves into the thought police?

However the common practice amongst most 'big' forums is to be very strict about what is allowed. Better safe than sorry seems to be the usual policy

I'll happily go with the majority on this of course. We could ask for everyones opinion in the main forum and see if we get a consensus there?

I'd rather any dubious posts were discussed at either SA+ or CA level for a decision but I'm of the opinion that, as mentioned, if in doubt - bin it.
