What options are there for getting (live, non-podcast) radio on the Hero? I'm thinking something like the BBC iPlayer might work but would it be usable in practice? Specifically to be able to listen to Radio4 while walking through somewhere like London on the way to work...

Can't say for BBC, but
- the built in browser can browse flash sites and thus play music from various sites
- you can get apps which support streaming of all kinds of music, for example the shoutcast app TuneWiki (http://www.tunewiki.com/)
So I think it should be possible to make an arrangement in some way. If you want to check for apps, try out the AndroLib site (http://www.androlib.com/), it links to the Android Market (the old Cyrket redirect site is now down).
Edit: try this link (http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/31138-bbc-iplayer.html) and this link (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f23/beebplayer-iplayer-on-your-android-device-17258/)
You could give me the link to the stuff you want to hear and I could try it out for you, but I doubt I would get access from DK
Thanks, looks like there's some apps - if you are able to try it out on yours the url is http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_fourfm/
:)
are any of the uk hero owners (assuming iplayer blocks non-UK access) able to test this out for me? Thankyou! :)

Just tried it (at home - connected via WiFi) and although it connected and said 'playing' - no sound :no2:

I had same experience on a HSDPA-connection in Copenhagen, which should be more than sufficient... loads fine, no sound. Maybe the flash can't speak with the "sound card" in the phone properly or zumthin...
Currently trying to find the right app, I know there has been some in the past, apparently BEEP player, is one, or was... can't find it. Not sure if it s the Beep Media Player project or not... the app is not on the market anymore.
So many radio stations make apps, can't see why there shouldn't be a BBC app as well. Well, i know some of their channels are not sent out digitally, so that is a no go, but other than that...
arr...thanks for trying! I think the Hero is still a go though despite lacking an FM radio. One hopes the bbc will get around to it (they did with most of the other gadgets eventually!) :)
Just grabbed "BeebPlayer" free off the market place. Works fine, no setup. Got Radio 4. It's about 15-20 seconds out of sync with live radio...though I can live with that.
iPlayer over 3G of shows worked well with the laters episode of Top gear steaming in "watchable" quality in about 30 seconds of pressing play. No stuttering. The app seems to work well and the hero is handling it all in it's stride.
I can see this passing long break I have away from a computer.
EDIT: Just tested the Live TV function (again on 3G - which like Youtube drops the quality) and it managed to be as close as the radio to live, and seemed to play well considering my phone signal was 1 bar (occasionally dropping to zero).
