Okay, this Hero (on 3) has been around a week and has been far more trouble than I thought it'd be. Certainly not a works-out-of-the-box experience!
Lots of trouble getting the data connection to work - ended up being told to factory reset by support, which worked for a while, then stopped working again for about another day, and is now working again... Now gmail and the web seems okay but market doesn't work ("could not start a reliable data connection to the server"). Apparently this needs another factory reset (who programmed that bit of the code?! :eyebrow:) followed by entering gmail login immediately during setup. Tried this, hasn't worked. While searching for the solution I saw many posts suggesting this is not a one-off thing?! Are we going to have to factory reset this phone frequently because having to backup and restore the contents every other week (or even every other day at the current rate) is not my idea of fun. Starting to think about taking advantage of the 14 day I-changed-my-mind policy.
a frustrated monkey...:sideways:
I got the Tattoo (cheapskate version)
The sync software can be a real cpu hog:sideways:
I'm taking mine off the start menu as I hardly use it with the pc.
Silly question, but what's the 3G coverage like where you are? I've never had issues with Market or connections.
As with TL, me neither. One think to check though - did you check "enable always-on mobile data" ? in settings -> wireless -> mobile network settings? This solves that.
Edit: I don't need this setting, but leaving it out causes the problems you specify on some networks. It happened to me when roaming in Belgium, not when roaming in Sweden, and so on.
Mine's been faultless. Ditch it while you can just in case it's a lemon.
One more for the 'I've had no problems' list. It's either an obscure setting that needs fixing as TL suggeests our if you're sure it's not that then go with Oldies suggestion and get a replacement.
There is reasonable signal (maybe averaging 2 bars of 3G or 3 bars of "H" whatever that is, not seen it fail to find signal yet) and I live in central London in the sort of area where you can be sure there are a few masts not far off, so wouldn't expect coverage issues (certainly all the other operators work flawlessly here). Every other phone either of us has ever used for data manages to download web pages on 1 bar of 2G. Failing to get data while the phone is stationary with 2 bars 3G is poor... especially when the voice/sms is operational (i.e. the radio for that works).
Data setting always on, automatic roaming, tried a few factory resets and re-set-up several times. Data has worked for a half day here and a few hours there but the market always failed.
We're back to the shop today and to cancel (14 day window) and she is moving back to something more reliable on a network that's not 3. Maybe it was a lemon, but it was bad enough to leave us sour (hur hur) to the idea.
Thanks for the replies :byebye:
3 has the best HSDPA network in terms of coverage, so it is not 3 imo. I'm on 3 myself and been very happy to date with the coverage of 3G and the HSDPA. I'm inclined to think that as Oldie says you have a lemon phone. First one I have come across tbh for the Hero.

Sorry to hear about your problems Monkey. I cannot say anything else than what the others already have: neither me nor those I know who also has a Hero has had any problems at all with it. Hope you have better luck with the next one, no matter what brand you choose :)
Is WiFi on? The only time I ever have any problems with connectivity it is while wifi is on. It tries to use that when I'd sometimes rather that it use 3G (open networks like cloud don't let you on the internet and load a stupid page instead).
I have never restored factory settings, but about a week after getting it I did update the firmware which had the same effect. It sounds like it is being suggested as they don't know what else to do, and not because it fixes the underlying problem.
