Title: How to increase my DPS
Post by: Jim on January 24, 2010, 10:30:04 PM
Ok, so i've been noticing this for a few raids now, but i cant seem to get an increase in my DPS from anywhere, a few upgrades seem to not make an effect and it just seems like i've hit a brick, but i would like to know if i need to completely have an overhaul of my gear to get my DPS up.....

My rotation is fine, i have my priorities set and im always pulling 4.5 - 5.5k DPS but i feel as if i could pull more ya know......

Any Ideas?

The priest, with the warrior, the hunter and the mage, are the only classes i have few clues about, but i can share with you what i realized on my lock.
Having a good rotation, a nice set of priorities, and everything set as you can find on elitistjerks forum is a nice start to put the avarage dps you're supposed to do. However, that's not all, in my opinion. It's the same reason you see people with the same gear doing a dps difference of about 2k. The key is to pop your cooldowns and use the potions at the right time. For example on my lock (Desade is affliction atm), i generally use to pop everything once i've set a full stack of dots/debuffs and the boss is under 25%, that's becouse it greatly affects the dps during the drain soul channelling, reducing the time between ticks and increasing their dmg greatly, thus increasing my dps by a good amount. In addition, you may want to enchant your boots with tuskar's vitality to reduce the time you're moving, and reducing the moving itself at the very minimum needed. However keep in count that the fights we're actually experiencing are melee friendly, in particular rogues put an unfair (or so blizzard stated) amount of dps, usually overdps'ing the other classes by at least 2k (i've seen many logs by people on the forum calling for nerfs on the rogues, and these logs showed that, while other classes were on 8-9k dps, the rogues were usually on 10-11k and more).

TL: DR - Once you set up your gear, talents, rotation and priorities, the only thing that matters is the timing of your cooldowns and potions, and in a lesser part the active dps time (reducing the movement).

Just my 2 cents of course.

P.S.: Again, this is just what i guess should be done, since i'm not much into dps classes.

I looked at armory briefly (just about to do something else) and would echo Tirk's comments.
In addition to the boots enchant he mentioned:

-alternative to the boots is crit rating which makes a big diff on shadow priests and your crit rating is relatively low atm
-you're still using the lower level Sons of Hodir shoulder enchant despite being Exhalted.  Go buy the proper one!
-buy the proper cloak enchant (23 haste) as you're using the cheap one atm
-you're way over the hit cap, so why not aim to replace some low level stuff with some very available craftables (like replacing your i226 bracers swapping hit for crit & haste with [item]47586[/item].  Not expensive to make and a decent upgrade.
-1650 rating PVP battlemaster trinket is another 52 spellpower over your i200 one, not tricky to get that rating
-frost emblem trinket is also an upgrade, of 42 spellpower over your i232 heroic party one
-change your talent build to include Improved Shadowform, you lose more damage to clipping/interupts than you think
-complete your glyph set and use the remaining two, one might benefit from the (mana)shadow fiend glyph?
-which would allow you to take 3/3 from focused mind and put 2/2 in Imp Shadow Form with some points left over to play with
-as that reduces yoru mana efficiency switch out the SWP glyph and put in Dispersion glyph.  That should be more than enough mana as SPs just *don't* go oom these days.
Consider using some of the spare points for Imp VE as a lot of fights really benefit from this therse days with constant raid-wide damage.

The above should push your dps up a fair chunk on its own, the rest is down to correct use of rotation, timing when to use trinks etc, and maximising DOT uptime.
-try to use SWD less, last time I looked it actually reduced overall dps unless it is right as you kill a mob
-watch your DOT up-time on movement fights, it starts to drop off e.g. Faction Champs (easy to say, harder to do in practice!)

And that's where I would start, but there's a decent improvement in the above.

Done most of what TL / Tirk has suggested and thanks for the feedback :D

Now i kinda thought to myself that i might drop herbalism (have it on a few other chars) and pick up either Enchanting or Tailoring, but cant decide which would be better for me... Any ideas?

Last time i checked, all the crafting professions were more or less on pair in terms of PvE dps, with jewelcrafting slightly ahead due to the flexibility of the major gems bonuses. If i remember right, the difference between a tailor and a non-tailor is the proc enchant on the cloak, while enchanting gives you a raw 46 spell power bonus with no loss. On the other hand tailoring gives you a proc based enchant on cloak, that gives you 295 per 15 sec, with an internal cooldown of 45 sec. However, this last enchant cost you the 23 haste one, which otherwise you would have on your cloak as a non-tailor, and it can be a bad downside, in particular since the haste buff for spriests from the last patch.
However tailoring is a lot easier to level. :narnar:

TL: DR - Go for enchanting, if you really have restricted the choice between those 2. If you go for tailoring you'll have to drop the haste enchant for a proc based one, while enchanting gives you a spell power boost at no cost.
