Title: Ubisoft hits the bottom

Or what do you think ?
QuoteWe love Assassinââ,¬â,,¢s Creed II. Itââ,¬â,,¢s a fantastic game that actually lives up to all the promise its predecessor fell just short of.

Its DRM, however, manages to undo all that good will and then some.

We werenââ,¬â,,¢t entirely sold on Ubisoftââ,¬â,,¢s new ââ,¬Å"anti-piracy planââ,¬Â when the publisher ran it by us last month, but little did we know that we were witnessing the birth of DRM so sinister that weââ,¬â,,¢re now petitioning to have the guy that created SecuROM canonized.

Hereââ,¬â,,¢s how it works (as discovered by the fine folks at PC Gamer UK): as youââ,¬â,,¢re already aware, the DRM requires an Internet connection to authenticate your game. As you werenââ,¬â,,¢t already aware, it requires that Internet connection at all times. Constantly. The second you lose that connection for whatever reason, even for a second ââ,¬â€œ be it a faulty wireless signal, a clumsy roommate, or a fried server on Ubisoftââ,¬â,,¢s end ââ,¬â€œ your game goes dark, you lose all unsaved progress, and youââ,¬â,,¢re locked out of the game until you resolve your connection issue.

Weââ,¬â,,¢re reminded, at this point, of an old Internet saying: DO NOT WANT.

Ubisoftââ,¬â,,¢s also afflicting the DRM upon Settlers 7. We werenââ,¬â,,¢t actually planning on purchasing Settlers 7 in the first place, and ââ,¬â€œ shockingly enough ââ,¬â€œ this hasnââ,¬â,,¢t done anything to change our minds.

Is this a joke, Ubisoft? Because weââ,¬â,,¢re not seeing the punchline. That is, unless you burst out laughing every time hundreds of thousands of pirates cause you to lose millions of dollars.

And one last thing, it only supports DX9 :lmfao:

Both games are complete shite and not worth buying, so I'm unconcerned at the moment. However it doesn't bode well for the future.

That being said the companies who will ultimately beat pirates are the ones who offer achievements, DLC and other incentives to buy a legitimate game. Not publishers who make life impossible for their paying customers.

Oh dear, when will they learn?

Once again, the pirates end up with a better game than the paying customers.

I only buy games on steam now. Copy protection at most is activation limits so is fine. This new idea is disgusting and won't stop pirates. No matter how sophisticated it is it will be cracked inside a month. It'll cost a fortune in lost sales when people are pushed towards piracy and I bet it cost them a fortune to develop too.

I'll be passing on Ubisoft then if that's the way they want to DRM me.

Well bother. I'm not bothered about AC2 or Settlers 7, but Splinter Cell: Conviction is going to be Ubisoft as well isn't it...
