First impressions (thanks to Tube strike)
Let's get the whines out of the way first:
1. I know it's beta, but with less than 2 weeks to go to release, I'd expect to get more than 1-2 minutes of gameplay in before a connection interruption and server drop. It's not just me, given the number of whine threads on the forums so far.
2. Remember that phase on Port Valdez, after the attackers have taken the second set of MCom's, and then have to push down that narrow road? Where the defenders get the apache spawn? I hope you liked it. So far, all the game play I've seen has been like that. Narrow, TINY maps, absolutely dominated by camping defenders. It has never been clearer that PC FPS's are becoming nothing more than console ports.
3. LAA-AAA-GG-AAAA-AA-AAAAGGGGGG! Sure, it's beta. I know this. But still... two weeks before release, and you can't even run smoothly?
4. Bland. Dull. Grey. If they had any less definition on the screen, you'd be looking at a BLANK screen. You know how frustrating it can be, looking for a wookie on Laguna Presa? Even when you know roughly where he is? Like that. But for everybody. And it doesn't help that your teammates markers is the same colour as half the terrain...
5. Instant death. Remember getting headshotted by a sniper in BC2? At least you know he was GOOD / got lucky. Get used to it. Except they don't seem to always need headshots. Expect more snipers in game. A LOT more. Especially with the amount of camping I've seen so far.
So... the good stuff:
1. Class design is more interesting than BC2. Gone are the ammo packs that allow dudes to endlessly spam 'nades, 40mm and CG. In fact, I didn't see anything that looked like CG-spam of any description. Expect more actual SHOOTING in the game! *shock, horror*
2. CQB - MOAR! So far, everything is VERY close up. Especially for those of us used to playing on the (relatively speaking) very large BC2 maps. Even sniper rifles just come with basic optics, 'cause there's absolutely no need for a x12, or even a x9 ANYWHERE (not that there really was a need for x12 in BC2, because then you're not doing your job!). Honestly... I'm not even really sure why they put optics in the game. So far I haven't seen anywhere you'd need 'em.
3. Camping - If you're on the defenders, you're almost expected to camp. The game almost gives you permission. Sure, you can TRY to sneak through one of the three open paths... but chances are, the attackers are coming down all three. It should lead to more teamwork, because you'll need to work as a team to attack properly (or just fail even more miserably than in BC2), and at least to some tactical gameplay on defence, because you'll need to make sure all the approaches to your base are covered.
also available from Steam ;)
Steam is too expensive, and I read mixed reviews, but G2PLAY.NET sells it for 27E (=36$, instead of 60$ on steam), so I got it :-)
will probably DL tonight and try it over the W/E.
