Title: Technical Boomkin Questions (quite long)
Post by: walrob on March 25, 2010, 01:16:40 PM
Hi

A few 'technical questions about Boomkins...

Does distance from target have a bearing on Threat. i.e. does standing close to a target generate more Threat than standing at maximum spell range?

Spell rotation in instances/raids (or part of a group):

I generally have three (four) variants of spell rotation depending on foe:

1 or 2 non-elites:
Usually, I am not fast enough to target and get off a spell before the tank kills them :-) Otherwise just Wrath or Moonfire as one hit is usually enough to finish them off.

Groups of (mainly) 3-6 non-elites:
Hurricane, Hurricane... Two is usually enough and shouldn't over aggro the tank. If it takes more than two the other DPS are not doing their job, or they are Elites.

2-3 Elites or > 6 non-elites:
I don't use Hurricane on large mobs in case of over-aggro (as I have found by experience).
- Farie Fire, Insect Swarm, Moonfire, then tab to second target and repeat (and then to the third and repeat, if appropriate). No more than three targets.
- On the last target, spam Wrath until Eclipse then Moonfire, then spam Starfire while Eclipse is active.
- While Eclipse is not active, when IS and MF ends, cast again, then spam Wrath, as above.
- If any are still alive (usually the other group members have killed the rest), repeat as above.

Bosses
- Farie fire, then...
- Insect Swarm, Moonfire, then spam Wrath until Ecplipse. Then Moonfire, then spam Starfire while Eclipse is active.
- If Eclipse is not active, when IS and MF ends, cast again, then spam Wrath, as above.

My DPS has gone from 1.6K to 2.2K this past week, mainly through gear.

Am I doing something wrong?

I realise that I need to be faster, both to keep up with certain tanks (you know who you are) and with hitting keys to cast spells. Hopefully this will come with practice.

Is haste a big factor, now I have Hit up to 8% (and increasing as I re-work my talents)?

What should I work on next: Intelligence, Crit (currently 26% in Moonkin form), or just raw Spell Power? Something else? Stamina?

I will be reworking my Talents to follow Sithy.

Any constructive criticism or other help appreciated...especially to get the Staff from Lady Deathwhisper, or with some instances I need to go into to get Trinkets.

Cheers

Standing at Max range or right inside the Mob will have no effect on Threat mate.

Well thats not entierly correct Bell.
From WoW Addicts Anonymus (http://wow-addicts-anonymous.blogspot.com/2007/09/threat-mechanics-basics.html):
QuoteIf you're within melee range, you have to generate 10% more threat than  the current target to pull aggro. If you're outside of melee range, you  have to generate 30% more. In the situation above, if the tank still had  1000 threat but the rogue suddenly shot up to 1100, the rogue would  pull aggro. A ranged DPS class could generate up to 1300 threat without  pulling aggro in this same situation.
Unless they changed it i belive this is still the case.

IF... you need to work out who in the raid needs it most, it doesn't stack, althoughit does stack with feral

The problem with boomkins is they real slow caster compared to other classes so for quick fights Moonfire and wrath ..
