Title: A Few changes.....
Post by: Penfold on April 03, 2010, 06:23:22 PM
In light of several issues, the nightmare that is the permissions structure on Admin CP and taking into account feedback from Game Admins, weââ,¬â,,¢ve simplifying the admin structure and dealing with concerns in one fell swoop. The result is:

The main change of this revised structure would mean for example that a COD4 Game Admin would only see the COD4 admin section and a BC2 admin would only see the BC2 admin section etc.

This addresses concerns weââ,¬â,,¢ve had from Game Admins that admins from other games have access to (and post) in other game admin subforums where they are not an admin.

This will shortly be implemented (when Smilo has time).

I take it if you were a admin for both you would see both?  Silly Question just making sure!

You see the games for which you are admin.

I think there is benefit in allowing all game admins read only access to the other games as there is potentially cross over - i.e. when looking to give a player there tag for a particular game and ensuring that they uphold the standards across all of our servers...

Also, why is it a big issue if another game admin makes a comment on a post within another games admin forum if the comment is relevant?

Just curious about why we're bringing in this change now when it hasn't been a problem for a number of years.

TBH it was instigated at the request of some Game Admins themselves.

Why? Some didn't like the fact that other admins were chipping into their admin areas when they themselves  were not admins. Others were concerned that their comments were not private within their own team and were opened up to a wider audience that they would have liked.

The parent forum allows posting and is accessible by all the Game Leaders and Game Admins where cross-games comments and issues can be posted. Similarly there will be a new sub-forum for Game Leaders to discuss their bits in private.

Does that make it a little clearer?

It does, it just seems a bit OTT given that the game admins and game leaders have generally all been involved in the community for a decent amount of time.  Given that, I think their views would be as welcome to a particular game as those of the game admins themselves...

Target, it's not devaluing the input that any admin has for their game, but their views in other areas are actually one of the concerns that has been voiced by game admins themselves.  The fact that GAs had cross-game access has in the past caused any number of issues, including quite a few spats, the odd witch-hunt & and an occasional toys-out-of-pram resignation, so the downside is something that perhaps only the CAs/SAs have had to deal with and GAs have never seen.

GAs are appointed to a specific game, so their views for that game are welcomed, the Game Leaders of course retain a wider cross-game view and have been involved in regular admin meetings throughout the year that deal with cross-game issues, GAs have never been involved in this aspect.   But, if by losing access to a game section for which you are not appointed an admin we manage to satisfy the concerns of those who have contacted us and aired their concerns then it seems a win win situation to us.    Some of the sections have always operated this way, seemingly without suffering any disadvantage (DMR being the case in point).

I hope this helps explain why the changes are being made.

I understand the points you make and accept them, thanks for explaining.  I'll wind my neck back in ;)
