Title: Call for Games for [WAN], [LAN] or [BOTH]
Post by: GhostMjr on May 03, 2010, 03:41:32 PM
Hi all,

As you know this is our Gaming development section but what does that mean?

Basically games that have been released in the past that we may have overlooked such as day of defeat source aswell as the future that could be suitable for both LAN and WAN for dMw.

I need your help and so does dMw!

I would like to expand our horizons for games and see what other gems are out there.

Simply put its a bit of a dry season but i want to have 2 solid games that we could play at the lans and possibly another 2 added to dmw's WAN catalogue.

I look forward to your suggestions and please for all future posts put [LAN], [WAN] or [BOTH] at the end of your topic titles to help the process.

Thanks for all your input.

Regards,

GM

Yes please.

We had several problems at the LAN this weekend which meant we couldn't really play CoD4 or L4D2. We know that BC2 is out as well.

We really need simple games with simple buttons that can be picked up and enjoyed by LAN attendees without having to have had previous experience of it.

Any thoughts or ideas welcomed.

Thanks

PS. I'm still keen to find a suitable flight combat type game as I think it would have great appeal.

[LAN]

Soldat, so good they're making a pay for version, pah, original and best.
Followed by Airfix Dogfighter.

And assuming you meant a seperate post thread, I'll post them both later :)

I've mentioned that one to ghost. I think it's got the most promise of the games I own for LAN play & graphics.
It needs looking into.

Looks like a fun diversion. I see it can be played 4vs4 which is fine for the LAN.

Presumaly it can just be hosted by one of the machines etc?

We seem to have missed out UT3 completely at the lans.. Wasn't there a footy version / mod? I'm sure Sheepy would know..

Can anyone who is remotely interested download the demo if Airfix Dogfighter (http://download.cnet.com/Airfix-Dogfighter-demo/3000-7544_4-10047404.html).

I know the graphics are poor but I think it's got potential. It's quick, easy and think it would appeal to the pi$$ed masses.

Any thoughts?

edit: I'm d/ling this as it's free. Worth a look http://download.cnet.com/Fighter-Ace-10th-Anniversary-Edition/3000-7544_4-10

It a good laugh but I dont really see it replacing the CoD or L4D2 as a main lan game

No, that's not the intent.

The idea is that we try to offer more in the way of supported games over the weekend. We think we should try something for the Friday daytime as well as something post steak night on Friday night. This would be one of the Friday night games when everyone's had a fair bit to drink and so a drop in, drop out game of something light may be in order.

We played it (airfix) at the last LAN I was at and it was a bit of fun. It runs locally on PC so it's not really a supported if that makes sense.

Soldat is much more fun though once people get passed the poor graphics. Rambo mode is made for the LAN.

For an all-out-free-for-all-multiplayer frag fest you can't beat UT. You can dip into it as and when you want and the plethora of modes means that most tastes can be catered for, although I can't recall there being a naked one? :norty:

Also everyone knows how to play FPS games so there is not much too learn, if it moves shoot it until it stops moving.

as long as it's the original and not the cartoon rubbish.
I can revive my classic team
Mini Cooper
Riley Elf
Clubman
Marcos
et al
:yahoo:

NvG still plays this with a mate every week on an old Windows ME machine:O

AFAIK, it's the "twitch deathmatch" aspect of UT that tends to put alot of Deadmen off. I quite enjoy it, but most seem to prefer something a bit slower and more tactical.

I think it's worth exploring the UT mod community though - there's probably more than a few hidden gems we haven't heard of.

- bomberman
- warcraft III
- Command and Conquer
- Unreal Tournament III
- Doom 3D  :D

That would be this (http://www.deathball.net/)

For UT2004 it would seem.

Some suggestions that just popped into my head:

SWAT 4 - It's an oldie, but it had one of the best Multiplayer experiences ever. I would urge you all to investigate. Highly tactical, incredibly tense.

Unreal Tournament 1v1 Instagib - We could run this as a short tournament on Friday night/Sunday morning. Fast and furious.

Sensible Soccer - Or a more modern equivalent. We could run some sort of mini World Cup comp across the weekend?

Team Fortress 2 - Somewhat neglected by DMW, its still one of the finest team-based shooters ever made. Would be amazing to have the entire room playing this - riotous fun.

Serious Sam HD - Bonkers co-op fun. I'm not sure on player numbers here though.

I had to double take to make sure I wasn't reading a thread from LAN 1 - you guys aren't seriously looking at digging out all these old games are you? Surely we should be looking forward to new games?

If your serious heres some other suggestions:

Rebelstar raiders
Chaos

They don't have lan capability but are hotseat compatible :narnar:

I was thinking of old games for 2 reasons:

1. They're usually cheap
2. Most people can run them without any difficulty

Newer games are all well and good, but not everyone can afford to buy and/or even run Big Hollywood Shooter 5.

That said, if you think any upcoming games are worth a look then post some links - I've already mentioned the new Ghost Recon game in another thread here (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=31037).

Also more and more games are now coming with no LAN support because that would be too much like a good idea!
