Guys,
I've had some earlier discussions with Oldie on the LAN and server setup. I thought we might want to broaden that here?
I'm wondering if it's down to firewalls and group settings.
My McAfee firewall allows me to accept the local network as trusted which allows traffic through. I'm wondering if this is a Vista/W7 issue that we need to explore?

Way out of my depth but thanks and go for your life :thumbsup2:

I'm on xp and could'nt join CoD4 or Arma2.
It was strange that 1 minute Lionheart could see one of the servers, and the next he couldn't. I never managed to see any of them :(
Welcome to the wonderful world of MS netcode.
All the PCs are set to DMWLAN workgroup, that's on the instructions, but some still never show up in the list.
In the past IPs were handled by the router's DHCP, although this year we connected via a network socket in the wall which went back to the router which I presume still had DHCP active.
The rest of the problem is Windows and firewalls.......
guys.. is there any mileage in this thread?:

It seems to point that the pc's are trying to resolve to the internet not to the rest of the network..

Looks promising, NF. Good find :thumb:
I would be extremely surprised if the hotel are using a modem connected to switches rather than having a router.
If I remember correctly TL had access to the router so he could check the status. Is that correct TL?
Nice find though, it's heading in the right direction.
Yes they run a Draytek router with DHCP on. A very nice router too, I have one myself.

What if we provide folks with IP's again? Do you think that would improve things at all?
Guys, Quick Update,
I came across a few things..
In W7 if you go into Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Advanced Sharing Settings there are a few switches that we may want to consider playing with. One of them that I found interesting is the File Sharing Connections and Encryption. There's an option for enabling file sharing for devices that us 40- or 56-bit encryption. I haven't been able to find out if XP will support 128-bit encryption..
Also, I came across this guide / thread as well: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/8d91509a-4694-4d7c-956f-cc49cd91b013
Perhaps there's some mileage in this? Is it possible for someone to test?

Sorry to have to ask this.. Oldie can you tell me the server software version we're using for the LAN server.
Thanks,
NF
Thanks Ninj for your investigations :)

No need to apologise :)
Windows Server 2003 64bit SP2
ta muchly
If it helps with any connectivity issues, I can provide OB with a (temporary for the LAN) licence for any of the following:
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
Windows Web Server 2008 R2
Windows Home Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation
Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2008 Standard
Update ...
Problem: Getting our LAN based servers to appear in the server browsers.
Although the recent big L4D update and the CSS updates since the last LAN put a spanner in the works (basically, I had to totally rebuild the servers for L4D, L4D2 and CSS) l managed to get a lot of research and testing done this weekend. To cut a long story of trial and error short I think I've got a solution.
By removing the 'nomaster' command from the startup (you know? the one that says 'don't phone home cos this is a LAN server') the servers suddenly appeared in both the ingame browser and HLSW and correctly identified as LAN servers (designated by the sv_lan cvar). The good news is that this works on my W7 64bit PC, my wife's W7 32bit laptop and my XP Pro Laptop for both CSS and L4D1. L4D2 still doesn't want to appear but, as usual, you can connect via manual IP entry. COD4 works fine as does ArmA2OA.
I might need to do some more testing at the LAN due to the different switches involved as well as a greater range of PC configurations but before I tried removing the 'nomaster' startup parameter I wasn't seeing any LAN servers, now I see all the CSS and L4D1 servers both ingame and on HLSW. So we're getting somewhere.
Oh and this was an interesting read (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/157025).
WELL DONE OLDIE!!!
I commend your efforts sincerely. I think you've made a huge step forward for us..
If I'm reading your post correctly, what is left to test would be DogFighter and NFS Shift. I think that both of these can be tested at the LAN. Also, I think that Shift is better run off of a PC of a gamer as otherwise it will take up slot. I think what I'll do is run the time-trial from my PC directly and open it up for "Time Trial Slots" on my PC for people to rock up and grab the wheel.
If I've mis-understood please let me know. Also, if there's anything that I can do over the next day or so, please let me know.

Both Dogfighter and NFS Shift will need to be run from a member's PC as there's no dedicated server for either and, as such, they tend not to want to install on a server with a basic 2D gfx capability. Whoever runs them will probably need to stop their firewall to allow others to join. So, yeah, more testing needed at the LAN me thinks.
Great work oldie thanks for all the hard work.
Need for speed is defo a run off gamer pc as is dog.
