Had my Desire for over a week now and I'm seriously impressed with android.
Going to start a thread for apps which I think are worth a mention :)
First thing to download is Barcode Scanner (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.google.zxing.client.android/) this will allow you to scan the QR codes on website, magazines etc so bring up useful information and even take you directly to the app's in the market to install. The QR code is like the one in my avatar, scan it for more info ;)
Next one is great for viewing this very forum and many others, Tapatalk Pro (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.quoord.tapatalkpro.activity/) quickly see new posts, your subscribed posts and make new posts. Theres a free version (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.quoord.tapatalk.activity/) too if you want to try it out, but you cannot post from this version only view.
Dropbox (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.dropbox.android/) - forget using usb thumbdrives for moving your files around. Install this on your pc's and your phone and you can access your uploaded files from anywhere! Theres even an gadget (http://www.google.com/ig/directory?url=files.dropbox.com/u/232/gadgets/dropbox_redir_mf-v2.xml) for igoogle homepage if you must :)
Like to use skype for free calls to other skype users? Fring (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.fring/) is the best way I have found as it intergrates all the popular chat programs into one. And because the android system lets you run apps in the background your skype contacts can always get hold of you!
Come and chat with the #deadmen irc heros on your android device, using AndroIRC (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.androirc/). We can be found at irc.uk.quakenet.org in #deadmen (needless plug) :D
Official XBMC remote (http://code.google.com/p/android-xbmcremote/) Control your XBMC media centre with your android device over wifi. If you've got a media centre running XBMC then you will love this one, loads the cd covers onto your phone screen too, its simple brilliant!
Advanced Task Killer (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.rechild.advancedtaskkiller/), keep your phone running fast by stopping unwanted background apps.
Create some crowd pleasing ringtones from your classics right on your phone with Ringdroid (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.ringdroid/). So simple and brillant for creating your own unique tone.
Phone security provided by Lookout (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.lookout/), stops you installing dodgy apps, backs up your contacts and photos which is handy if you upgrade or lose your phone and also lets you track your phone if it goes missing. Best thing, its free!!

As far as Advanced task killer goes it has been discussed before and decided generally speaking the phone is best left to allocate it's own memory, a lot of thought has gone into the multitasking of these phones.
Other apps I use regularly are AppBrain, RoboDefense and ThrottleCopter.
Some programs dont have close buttons, its nice to get them closed when you don't want to use battery up.
Game: Flight Director (free with ads). Damned addictive :)
Ok some stuff:
Locale - pure genius for adjusting your phone automatically, with plugins simply amazing. Endless possibilities.
FeedR - the best for RSS news,
Fast Reboot - for soft-rebooting,
Droid48 - the old HP48 calculator,
Cardiotrainer - for running (prefer that to Endomondo),
Grooveshark - for streaming music (but note, needs VIP-access),
Autokiller - for adjusting the internal timings of Android (and this DOES make a difference and does not compare to regular killer apps),
Paid Apps - to circumvent the problems with no market in Denmark,
LogMein Ignition - for remote control,
Better Terminal Pro - for changes to the OS,
AutoStarts - for handling all that start up nonsense,
Wireless Tether - to make the phone a wireless hot spot when on the laptop in the train,
Calendar Pad - for the best calendar yet if you use google calendar
LauncherPro Beta - homescreen replacement, mucho faster, but still lacks functionality
Aldiko - best book reader app, for evening reading (I actually do it)
Danish apps: RejsePlanen Quick, De Gule Sider, iTog...
Some of my must-haves:
- CalWidget (http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.eggenstein.android.calwidget): the best calendar widget for Android. I cannot imagine life without it.
- ASTRO File Manager (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.metago.astro): very good file manager with lots of useful features. I particularly like the one that gives you an overview over what folders on your phone is taking up the most space. Very handy for cleaning up
- Stats (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.sebastian.stats): simple but brilliant app giving you an overview over your essential usage data
- Tuner - gStrings (http://www.appbrain.com/app/org.cohortor.gstrings): I play, amongst others, both the guitar and the ukulele, and this is a very very good tuner!
- LastPass (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.lastpass.lpandroid): you'll need your passwords when you're browsing with your phone as well
- Opera Mini (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.opera.mini.android): if you're going for high-speed browsing (and minimizing bandwidth costs), this is your choice. The best browser when it comes to reading news papers etc. (I even use it when on WiFi, so much faster than Dolphin)
- YR.no (http://www.appbrain.com/app/yrwidget.eurobate): widget for Norwegian weather data. Very nice, but won't be much good for you "foreigners"
- Shazam (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.shazam.android): for all the times when you just have to find out the name of the song you're hearing on the radio/TV/cinema/etc.
- Alarmed (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.heychinaski.alarmedlite): the alarm clock for those having a hard time waking up. Solve math equations and anagrams to make it stop
- AppBrain (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps): after some time you will have many apps. Android Marketplace sucks, and this one is here to save your day!
And also some other nice-to-haves:
- Network Discovery (http://www.appbrain.com/app/info.lamatricexiste.network): you can't call yourself a proper geek without it. Do machine discovery/mapping, port scan etc.
- Wifi Analyzer (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.farproc.wifi.analyzer): get the best out of your WiFi network by choosing the right channel
- Snooker Scoreboard (http://www.appbrain.com/app/fiverings.snooker): I play snooker. This one is good for keeping the score.
- c:geo (http://www.appbrain.com/app/carnero.cgeo): ever tried geocaching? This one is for you!
- xScope Browser (http://www.appbrain.com/app/sui.mGLite): good alternative browser that is very fast. It also have some nice revolutionary one-finger gestures.
- ColorDict (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.socialnmobile.colordict): good app to look up in multiple dictionaries, thesauruses, wiki's etc (you can install whatever you want)
- Listen (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.google.android.apps.listen): Google's own pod cast player. Very nice if you use it together with Google Reader.

This is of course depending of the app, but just because an app doesn't close itself doesn't mean it'll consume battery. I have almost since the start when I got my Hero been a great fan of TaskPanel (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.taskpanelite), and I was constantly killing apps. After the discussion referred to by T-Bag however, I reconsidered and have since then let the phone handle this much more on its own. And to be hones, if anything, I find the phone to be slightly more responsive and stable. Of course I use TaskPanel every now and then to kill a specific app (I have for instance
no use of that annoying Footprints that starts at every boot...), but it's getting more and more seldom.

Forgot to mention Swype (http://www.swypeinc.com/)! Its seriously amazing for writing things quickly on the touchscreen. Its only beta at the moment, but If you want It can be found at XDA-DEV's forums. I'm running this one found in this post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=671070
I can't get Swype working. I copied it to the SDcard, installed it. It said it was working, but it's not showing up in my apps or under my available keyboards. Am I missing something?

Install it then goto settings > "language & keyboard" and tick swype. Then goto a text input box and do a long press on it until you get the popup box and choose input method > swype.

It helped, but I still couldn't use it. The version had expired and the other one I found was the wrong size. I've signed up for the beta and see if I get that. Doesn't seem too far from release so hopefully it'll pop up on the market soon.
Yeah it's one of my favorite apps now! Don't know why yours isn't working thought. Like you say, it's beta at the moment but hopefully close to full release. Its on my purchase list for sure! Using it now out in the sun ;)
