Seems like it is getting close - for those that cares. I don't think I can be bothered anymore... I'll wait for a rooted, tuned version of it, the 99% working ROM I have now is good enough to wait some more... sheeesh... 2.1 is already outdated. I doubt we will see 2.2 in some adjusted form on the Hero officially...

Paul O'Brien is already knocking out a tricked out version of the 2.1 ROM over at MoDaCo (http://android.modaco.com/category/409/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/)

Yeah I've been following that. Looks good :) I am certain the path is to wait for some modded version of the ROM.

I have grown too fond of the SuperHero ROM though to go Modaco. Much faster and just the needed bits of sense. They have a version coming out in a few days with custom kernel allowing overclocking (already out for their VillainROM 6). Considering that SuperHero has optional JIT-enabled and thus almost doubles the CPU-power, clocking the CPU to ~ 610MHz as well, which seems common, would make it fly :)

Ok, So I've not bothered with all these fancy rooting things, but what are the advantages?

Is there a stable 2.1 release which has the turn-by-turn satnav support? That was the biggest thing I was looking forward to.

Well.. I am not certain about the turn-by-turn but: with the latest leaked 2.1 ROM, which will be the final one, you are 99,99% there in stability. If you fancy going into this, check out Modaco Custom ROM 4, which is soon ready. If you don't want to wait, check version 3.2. Their forum is quite good.

I presently use another ROM, SuperHero 1.1, which has turn-by-turn (that doesnt work in Denmark), which is a lightning fast ROM, but if you want nothing less than official stability, I'd skip that.

Also - there are many other great turn-by-turn apps out there.

I just got my Hero rooted last weekend (many thanks to Delan for excellent support ). I went with the stable Modaco rom with Android 1.5. However, I'm gonna look into moving on to their 2.1 rom as soon as that is out.

Even with only running 1.5, I find several advantages over the stock HTC rom:

And also, if you upgrade to the stock 2.1 as soon as HTC releases that, you might have a hard time to root your phone. So it is better to root it now, even if you go for a 1.5 rom, and then upgrade to a suitable rooted 2.1 (or 2.2 :woot2:) later on!

To supplement Bob: MCR 3.2 is 1.5 and MCR 4 is 2.1, so check out the ETA on that v4, should be close.

Another good thing with root: excellent wireless tether, turning your phone into a WEB 128-bit encrypted, MAC-address sorting, DHCP-server enabled wifi router :) Good for working in the train!

Well, you got it now: Google Maps Navigation in 11 more Countries (http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/06/fun-on-autobahn-google-maps-navigation.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+OfficialGoogleMobileBlog+%28Official+Google+Mobile+Blog%29), and Denmark is amongst them. Norway is still missing though
