I can't be bothered to convert, I use divx/xvid players. I have bought yxplayer (http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/kr.mobilesoft.yxplayer/) for a few bucks, and it is acceptable. There are plenty of other players in the making. Divx playback does suck a lot of power though.

The phone itself does handle most other formats.

Try the rockplayer beta - LINK (http://www.xda-developers.com/android/play-divx-xvid-h-264-and-more-on-your-android-device-with-rockplayer/)

RockPlayer can play most kinds of video files including avi, mkv,  rmvb, flv, mp4, 3gp, wmv, mov, asf, divx, xvid, and h264 formats. This  version supports android versions from 1.6 to 2.2.

Works like a charm on my Desire.
