Title: Halo
Post by: smilodon on October 12, 2003, 01:00:58 AM
Suprised no one has commented on this one. It's a real blast and the game Unreal 2 never stood a chance of being.

There's a solid story line which although not Oscar material is pretty sound. The graphics are excellent with some stunning landscapes, although the sprites and player models aren't quite as good. Some interior scenes are quite repetitive too.

The AI is truely great in this game with apparently no scripting at all. In fact it could be about the best AI I've ever come across. Enemies hide dodge, flank and generally make life hard as hell for you. And amazingly they rarely do the same thing twice. Should you have to replay a level (there are no real levels as the game prec-caches the next scene..yes NO load screens EVER!), through getting killed, the enemy may appear out of the same drop ship, but will take all kinds of different routes through the scenery, so what you learnt first time around doesn't help much upon replay. The enemy even runs away in good order and hides if they feel out numbered or have seen too many comrades die.  Listen for their chatter too (oddly aliens speak English) as it's often hyserically funny.

The lack of scripting also means you can tackle each "level" in different ways. Maybe snipe from a-far, get up close and personal with an assault rifle or tear-ass about in a jeep letting your gunner take on the baddies. I've played several levels more than once and each time it's been a different experience.

Strangely it feels a bit like playing Giants: Citizen Kabuto as a FPS but don't ask me why :) There's a sense that there is a real set of physical laws at work here. You can jump about the right height, a grenade blows the enemy about the right distance and vehicles behave in a particular way. It's hard to explain but there's a wonderfully satisfying feeling moving around this strange alien world.

This really is a quality game and any self respecting FPS addict should get it now.

More than that it's out NOW. Go buy it :)

However if you have the Xbox version there's nothing much new in the PC one (except the graphics are a bit better)

The PC version has extra weapons and vehicles in multiplayer than the X-Box version :)

I'm really enjoying this game. The graphics are superb and it is quite a challenge.

I tried the MP last night and as usual it's full of xxxxx but hopefully I get a better understanding of the game...

It's actually getting better and better as I progress, and it was always good to start with.

I've found Scorpion Tanks and Banshee Hover Fighter Type Things. There's snow and ice, rainy swamps all all kinds of other goodies.

Apart from Myth, which I never played and Oni, which is a PS game, the developer Bungie have done nothing much before this. So I'm doubly amazed they have made such a belter.

And there is a sweet irony that Valve dropped Gearbox for Ritual as the developer of CS:CZ. Gearbox go and convert this gem to the PC and Ritual go and bork up CS:CZ. Well done Valve...again

Played a couple of missions and i ain't too sure - reminds me too much of Unreal Tournie, and plays too similar to bits of other games like Unreal and AVP.  Nothing much new here.

I'd be more interested in multiplayer after all the rave reviews that element of it got on x-box - anyone played it on-line in any depth?

Woot, I've just finished the single player. What a long game!!!!

When you do finish you must watch the credits all the way to the end and then watch for the last little clip

Good hint as to Halo 2

I'm working through the game on the hardest level. Either you are all a lot lot better than me (probable) or you've been playing for ages. I'm still trying to get off the ship!
Title: Halo
Post by: DarkAngel on October 19, 2003, 11:24:18 PM
If you havent completed the game yep dont reas this.

How much time did u have left on the last mission in which you gotta get a jeep through the ship and airlifted to safety i was doing it cooperativly and only had like 10 secs to spare phew. By the way those big blue guys (predators) theres a weakness that kills em in one shot in their middle of thier back is a pink highlight shoot them right there and they die instantly use a pistol zoom it in and there goes the hard work norally required to kill em. And also can u use the alien tanks in the pc version???
Title: Halo
Post by: DuVeL on October 20, 2003, 03:58:33 PM
Haven't used an alien tank (yet). Also haven't had to race (yet). I don't know if I have to do those things. I'll get back on it l8er.

Halo is a directX 9 game and we all know how GeForce cards "handles" DX9. From our latest LAN we saw that Halo ran best on a GF card if the Nvidia driver was at least 5x.xx.
Title: Halo
Post by: smilodon on October 28, 2003, 06:26:50 PM
Well worded Mr. Sadako. I run a modest GF 3 card and with the 5x.xx drivers Halo runs as sweet as a nut. My only concession to the frame rate god is that I have shadows set to blobby. So latest drivers blah blah  was spot on  :)

Give it an enema! Defrag it, but first set your virtual memory to 'no paging file'. After it's defragged, do it again! Windows defragger doesn't do that good a job. When you've done that reset the paging file to 'windows managed' Empty out the windows 'temp' folder. In general, give it a good springclean. Check you have the 'best' drivers. Imo the latest drivers aren't always the best.
Oh, and use Regheal to clean all the crap out of the registry.

good advice, but don't get into the habit of defragging your HDD every week as it's a HDD killer.

Title: Halo
Post by: Gandalf on October 28, 2003, 07:33:16 PM
hard disk drive.

defrag run too often will destroy hard drives.

at most, it should be run every 3 months.
Title: Halo
Post by: Bennie on October 28, 2003, 09:52:55 PM
:o destroy as in?...

i actually do defrag allot... like 3/4 times a week  :o

could that be the problem??

Or a new driver, because i used to be able to play BF1942 and UT 2003 really smoove now there both unplayable

Hard drives are mechanical devices. They have a finite lifespan. Every time you defrag the drive you are making the disk work non stop until the defrag has finished. On a large HDD this can be a while. Such use will eventually wear out the drive, and it'll happen a lot faster than if it was just used normally.

I used to run defrag all the time on my first PC and the poor HDD died after about 14 months of use. Lost everything. After that I found out that it's best not to run defrag that often as a: you don't need to, and b: it'll eventually kill the drive.

If you have Win2k / XP then you can analyse the drive with the defrag tool and this'll tell you if it's needed. Or if you're running a Win9x install then the defrag tool should report automatically. (can't quite remember on that one, been a while since I've run any Win9x machines)

Here (http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/answerstips/story/0,24330,2147983,00.html) is a useful, if dated, article on the subject.

The new nvidia drivers although are superb for halo suck on BF1942 it caused problems for Albert, madness and my machine at the weekend so we had to role back to the last drivers we had.

Just been playing Halo online with my shiny new copy and have to say that it was the most fun I've had with a deathmatch-type game ever !!!

Totally kicks the ass of soulless rubbish like unreal tournie (no offence to those here who play it - it just wasn't for me and I sold if after a couple of days).

Couldn't find doormans server, but played CTF with a set of warthogs and had an absolute blast - I'd highly recommend setting a server up if we can, but if not then it's still great fun !

p.s. anyone know if you can save favourite servers, or do you have to manually find them every time ?
