How come no one posted Bloons Tower Defense 4 (http://www.ninjakiwi.com/Games/Tower-Defense/Play/Bloons-Tower-Defense-4.html)? That's a classic that'll keep you hooked for hours if you let it.

Tip: start off on the easiest mode.

I'll second Bloons Tower Defense 4, it's very good. Not sure if it's the 'best' tower defence game, there are so many and all a bit different.

I've been playing these games:

.. for about 7 hours now, and I'm only nearly finished the second. Says a lot that a simple (and free) flash game can have more game play than your average console blockbuster!

Action Turnip (http://www.kongregate.com/games/raitendo/action-turnip) is another I played recently that probably meets the 15 minute mark. :)

I think the best is the earlier revisions of Desktop tower defence. The latest versions have too many fancy creatures and towers, but the earlier ones had the balance just right.

Also seems I have a reason to put more time into the quick fire pool game. With no challenger to contend for the throne it had become a little boring. It's on.
