I think the best thing you can teach your kids is actually a nice Dutch saying (also my motto):
"Verheilig niet het doel, maar de weg ernaartoe"
translation:
Don't glorify the goal, but the road towards it. (or should I say "the way too reach it")
Meaning something like:
Don't spend your live chasing after a goal, and with that sacrifice everything, but rather enjoy your life and take time to appreciate life and all that it brings.
Because even if you achieve your goal, it might not have been worth it, as you might end up, all rich and successful, but without a family or friends to celebrate it with.

A good one I heard was a quote from the character Ghost in Matrix Revolutions "It's better to die 'for' something, than 'of' something". Fine sentiment but I'm too chicken to live by that idea.
