Right ho chaps.

Given the problems we had at the last LAN I want to be right on top of the games this time and for us to have contingencies where possible should be find the game we've chosen won't run.

I'm not sure who's got the permissions to see this. Obviously Council and Ninja, anyone else? If so please respond.

I'll post the password in Game Leaders so they can get involved.

GM has posted a thread here (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?31674-LAN-Games&p=314128#post314128). I've jumped on it because if people want to input they can sign up here and input.

We know that at the last LAN we had problems. Can we please revisit this and go through the games to find out whether we have a solution for those problems or whether they may occur again. If they're going to re-occur then we need to have a contingency.

So then

CS - works fine.
CoD4 - didn't work because not everyone could see the server? Anything else?
Arma II - ?
LFS - ? fine?
Deagle - fine

^ please update with any germane info.

Thanks

The problem is not the games, it's Windows.  Mixed OS on the same workgroup and Windows fails to see them all.  It needs a lab test with similar mix of machines if we hope to find any solution at all, which I doubt exists at all.  Windows is just not good at Workgroups and what it sees and does not see is sometimes bizarre to say the least.

OK. And we know that currently The OC is not able to support us going to online servers. So what then do we do and what games do we play?

Currently we have

CS:S + Deagle which are old favourites.

I don't know which of CoD4 or BC2 worked or didn't work. Anyone recall?

BC2 is 'their servers' only, so we need an ADSL connection to then get out to BC2 servers unless someone 'acquires' a hacked/leaked version which gets around the EA backend.

COD4 we can run our own servers on the LAN box.

Magnus came up with this following April's LAN  for BFBC2 but if you say that OC cant handle us all connecting through the connection.

Arma II I am sure we have played it before.  Will look in to for more info.

CoD4 we have had working many times.

L4D the first one worked as well.

For Arma II and CoD 4 we had some people who could see the server and some who could not.  We spent some time trying to troubleshoot the issue with limited success.

Yes I recall that the ArmaII was particularly difficult with some people seeing the server one moment and then not seeing it the next and being DC'd.

I will be doing some research and live bench testing between my PC and the LAN server to try and bottom out the game visibility issues. From the hazy memory of the testing we did at the last LAN it was almost certainly down to firewall issues and the exact science (not) that is Windows networking.

I'll let you know what I find.

I'd like to see:

CoD4
L4D
UT3
CSS
DEAGLE

also games like:
warcraft 3 and NFS shift can be a lot of fun.

Maybe even a warcraft 3 tourney (we all suck now, so why not? :P)

I think starcraft II will be played by some, but I doubt everyones pc can run it comfortably enough.

Edit:
I missed your 2nd post penfold, and the subject any solutions about the problems I have no input, I'm just too inexperienced in that area.

Dogfighter would be a blast if enought people have it.
You can get a good game going with as few as 4 people, but is fantastic with a server full.
There's Deathmatch, TDM and capture the flag modes.
It doesn't support joystick afaik, but tbh it is intuitive with mouse and kb.
It has an auto levelling easy flying mode, and a more hard-core free-flying mode. It's up to you which you use and doesn't affect other players.
It's Ã,£11.99 on steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/42500/)

:withstupid:

Dogfighter is a bit tricky to get the hang of but it works out of the box with the XBox controller which makes it more enjoyable.

Let me know if I can help at all OB. I did some intial research as you know. I'm happy to start digging again if necessary.
