So,
I have been a virgin media customer for some years.
There service has gradually got worse and currently we are paying around Ã,£22 for broadband only.
We did have the 20mb service but i downgraded this to 10 meg whilst i was at uni and seeing as i am at work all day theres little point in having 20meg or 50 meg.
So i was browsing the web and remembered what TL said at the last lan.
Bt were essentially going to role out a new fibre service to a few exchanges and those lucky few could get fibre speeds of up to 40mb and 10meg down.
I am highly considering this as my exchange is on the list for december 2010.
I want to leave virgin mainly due to traffic shaping.
The 3gb limit between 9am and 3pm and then 1.5gb limit between 4-9pm sees me grind down to around 2.8 meg.
So has anyone got bt infinity which is the fibre bt broadband NOT bt total broadband.
What do you think of it and does anyone know any more about it?

Finally all installed and sorted.
After a few phonecalls got 50mb virgin with free new wireless N dongle and d-link router installed.
Ã,£20 activation fee wavered aswell as the Ã,£40 installation charge!
Plus I get it for Ã,£33 a month Ã,£5 a month saving :D!
Total Ã,£120 to spend wisely at the bar at the Cromwell! :D

TL, from what i have heard BT have been forced by ofcom to allow all providers to run on this network not solely them.
Bt infinity also has a monthly cap of around 100gb on the top package and severe traffic shaping to around 2mb at peak hours.
I appreciate it will be better than your current deal but there may be a cheaper alternative to bt when its rolled out.
As I use my internet alot I went with virgin as it isn't shaped although I know virgin isn't available in your area which is pretty harsh!.
BT Inifinity has been rolled out to that green cab at the end of my street. So I checked to see I can get it with BT then when they said yes I spoek to Zen and they said yes to for only Ã,£5 more so why not.
But my issue is that my master socket is a really stupid place and so I will have to wall mount this VDSL modem, and run a power cable to it, then run cat5/ cat6 to my router.
Or use a extension kit and possibly lose some of my connection speed.
Or Take the hit and move the master socket. Ã,£120 +
Also is this thing wall mountable?
So in a quandary about what to do.
Any one had this modem installed ?
Are BT not running fibre all the way to the house then?
When NTL put my fibre in years ago they just drilled a hole in the front of the house and that's where the modem ended up. They were pretty flexible about where it could go, they were even willing to run it upstairs if I needed it.
No mate it is Fibre to the cab then copper to the house, but speaking to Zen they said the engineer will do up to a 30m extension and after speaking to one of the guys that have it install sounds like it pretty good they were moving the master for free as well.
Also landlord is all on board as long as it looks good when they have installed it. No probs there.
So feeling more positive about this :)
Cool. I didn't think copper was fast enough but I guess it must be over short distances.
At least you won't have a scruffy BT engineer kicking holes in your walls. NTL used to leave one hell of a mess.
Toby is correct it is fibre to the cab only. As his cab is close he is lucky so should get good speeds.
Also its far more pricey then vm!
100 meg will be cheaper than their 500gb deal!

Regarding ntl tut.
We only have fibre to the cab too. Its coax into the home. The lead in the back of your modem and tv box are coax not fibre.

A few times I've asked a BT engineer to move a socket when he's been at the house doing something else and just dashed him some beer money and he's done it. Worth asking anyway.
Thanks pen will keep it in mind. Only going with their 50gig pack and it not traffic shaped and now fair use policy.
For an extra Ã,£8 a month, I go from 2mb to 30mb I think its a good deal and i don't have to deal with virgin or bt support.

Lads, you are being ripped off. If the fibre doesn't go into your modem then it ain't fibre at all; it's practically a normal cable connection since it's using coaxial.

It's not even coaxial, it's twisted pair :p
But BT are doing different rollouts in different areas. Fibre to the cabinet for most areas as this is the cheapest option of getting good speeds to the customers as most cabinets will be at most a few hundred metres from peoples properties, even twisted pair can handle high speeds and there is no need for any customer side work. Then there is fibre to the home where the glass wire of delight is taken straight to the customers home. This is preferrable for customers, but is far more expensive so is only being done in certain areas.
Still, once the fibre is at the cabinets, then for future expansion, it shouldn't be too difficult to fibre from here to the customers location in the future.
Well this is the best option to me cause I live in a new build area and they decided not lay any cable or fibre, and as I am so far from the Exchange, it is now a down to a choice of supplier.
I've just heard that VM have now applied traffic shaping to their 50meg package, is this true??
