I have noticed recently and which I think is beginning to and has the potential to ruin our great game is.
Not following leaders order/direction. Which leads to frustration and when in the middle of a map in some case (including yours truly) giving up and letting it hit the wall.
So my fine team mates of admins, any ideas? how we can stamp this out without looking like a bunch of fascist.
One idea is we should give whoever the leader is a bit more time on the map screen if they want to plan. So whoever is admin confer with whoever it is before hitting the continue.
Which is exactly why I don't like being the Squad Leader - orders have a nasty habit of being ignored. I don't mind bossing people about and shouting at them if they don't do what I ask them to, if neccesary, but I also want people to enjoy playing on our server.
The 'planning delay' is a good start, making sure everyone knows what we're supposed to be doing will help.
All we can do as admins, imo, is lead by example and hope that rubs off.
Well given that 90% of the people who play are dMw then it 'shouldn't' be too hard.
I suggest putting names to it here so other admins can say if they have the same problem. If it's consistent then a word in their shell-like is in order and is something that perhaps TL, I or another Council member can do to make it generic. If it's admins / council members then also speak up.
There is a balancing act between being too draconian and giving everyone a free hand.
The planning session doesn't really help, we change things as we go. The game also limits it as it the commanding is woeful.
That said, there's lots of frag hunting going on. Once I get five minutes of my life back I'll post something succinct and clever, but until then I think it's just a watch this space piece.
I thought I'd add to an existing post rather than create a new one. When I began playing Arma 2 again the fun was that I was part of a well organised team being lead by someone with a clue. I was quite happy to sit in the drivers seat of a tank for five minutes waiting to be called forward once the anti-armour was dealt with or the enemy helicopter downed. It's part of Arma and what makes the co-op, slow burn style of play so much fun. Unsurprisingly the people leading the squads were all Admins or Oldie who to be honest I and most of the rank and file considered to be an admin plus a very senior member of the community. I don't think it's a coincidence that Admins make good squad leaders. Not just because they know the game and the maps but because they have a certain authority as well.
However in the last few weeks I've been on Tuesdays and Sundays (plus some random nights) and the leader/follower model seems to be struggling. Yes when there are two or three of you on a Domination map, it can be fun to all jump in A10's and go on strafing runs (although Oldie and I have actually managed to make a go of a town assault on foot with just the two of us.) However even when we get five or six players on-line and someone is leading I still hear a few usual offenders telling everyone that we're struggling so they will bring up the Apache and or A10. This completely throws the game and we end playing Shock and Awe from the hills. Arma II suddenly becomes a spectator sport. It seems to be a continuous issue. Also even with an admin on-line they are still having to repeatedly say 'no!' to requests for helicopters, tanks, artillery, jets etc.
Would it be an idea for someone to post up a sort of overview of Arma II and how we play it on this server, with reference to organised assaults that rely on infantry first and armour etc only when it's really needed. It's certainly not everyone who is forever jumping into choppers or planes or disappearing of up a hill as a sniper. So rather than single out people we could post a reconfirmation of how the game should be played?
Bumping this. It might just be me, but while I know it's often hard to know who is up and who is down all the time, I don't much enjoy being unconscious when your within ten feet of another player who seems obsessed with blowing up the enemy armour rather than healing me. So I lie there and watch butterflies and my re-spawn timer count down to zero. Occasionally we have to kill an enemy to get to a fallen comrade but surely it must be priority one to get your team mates up, especially when we don't have re-spawn. I'm not picking on anyone in particular..... OK yes I am, as everyone else is great at getting team mates on their feet. Add this to the unauthorised artillery calls, the endless whining about being able to fly an Apache and the sudden arrival in a main battle tank when heavy armour is expressly forbidden and it's beginning to affect my enjoyment of the game. Moan over.

Can't argue with any of that, and I'm fairly sure I know who you are referring to.
Domination doesn't work when the server is unlocked. I found it impossible to figure out what was going on while we had pubbies charging in with tanks and crashing choppers into each other.
I understand and I am sure we have all been there, and I am really sorry you feel like that mate I really am. This is a issue that we have been and will be fighting with for sometime I fear. The only thing we can do is back each other up, and be really tougher on it. I do find that stopping the mission halfway till someone does something, or reducing the range of the rules of engagement also keeps some ppl in line.
I will keep a eye on this and try and figure something out. (let me know if it happens more while I am away)
Ok so maybe we run non domination on Public Nights and if we want to run Dom only do it on Private nights. I personally dont mind which, as long as we have both nights.
I know it's hard to deal with and it was just a general moan to make me feel better (and possibly an abuse of the admin forum?). However to be clear I'm not referring to public players. I totally understand that we cannot control what they do effectively, especially when there are so many of them and we're on such a huge map. My issue is with our own. The whole experience gets frustrating when you know someone is more interested in killing tanks that getting you on your feet. I'm also highly suspicious of these disconnects every time 'someone' gets killed. I'd love to get booted out of the game and have the opportunity to rejoin straight away.
Oh I'm just being a grumpy cynic ignore me.
Particularly galling when I told Sulky earlier in the week to pay more attention to downed team members than dormant Shilkas.
I have added it as one of our rules of engagement.
I claim Geneva Convention every time I heal, for 2 reasons. Firstly to annoy people, although it's not working, secondly and more importantly to reiterate that irrespective of fire/flood/plague healing is priority. Healing under fire is rewarding and worth it.
I'll continue to reiterate and will endeavour to be more blunt about it.
We should check the server logs on that disconnect issue...
