ok, so to start i would of posted this in the previous ping thread but the reply is closed so here it is...my ping is about 70 in 1.5 while i go to a game in steam and my ping is around 1000...i tried changing my rates and such and none of that helped my ping...when i list servers the latency says it will be about 30-50 but in game the ping registers around 1000...i have no idea what the problem is, please help me :(
we have had concerns with people getting 1000 ping before ....some of them were down to the fact they were still dloading some of the other halflife mods...
check to see if the monitor is busy getting things like Tfc and Dod ..
but then again it could be another problem
I may be wrong but doesn't a ping of 1000 mean your ping can't be determined? I remember seeing this in Raven Shield when the master server had guts ache or something.
My 10 cents.
i checked the monitor and its not dowloading anything or what have you but my ping is still high...if it cannot identify my ping what can i do to make it identify it?
ok so here some more info on it, my clans 1.6 server just got up, there is no stats or amx mod on it, its just basic right now...and my ping is 20...but i go join another server and ping is 1200. please help me guys
What you're saying makes little sense unless the route to your clan's server bypasses something bad in the route to other servers???
ok like 5 minutes after that post, i went back to my clans server and the ping was back up at its normal 1200...grrrrrr...ill keep feeding info and one of you wiz guys can solve my mystery...thank you again...and P.S. steam sucks
In order to check your connection why not run some download ping plotter (or similar) and run some tests. You can post the results (nice visual screenshots if it helps) and identify specific network spikes if any. Leave it running whilst you play CS at several different servers and compare the results.

You do a google search for 'ping plotter download' and click on the first link, or else you might feel like taking a wild stab at it by visiting //www.pingplotter.com.
Install the package.
Point the package at the website you want to check your connection (e.g. meathook.deadmen.co.uk) and then press Trace.
Watch the pretty pictures and you'll see how your connection does on each hop.
Report back when done.

ok it is saying under "DNSName" that "Destination Address Unread", and the graph is constantly red and it saying that "100% packet loss"...i entered ur site, fibefrag.com(where my clans server runs out of), and cs.qtracker.com(my 1.5 server site). i think i did something wrong
actually for that one thing it says "destination address unreachable"
check you typed the server name in correctly. Try the forum address instead, or the main website //www.deadmen.co.uk. You should be able to connect to something......

Well there's nowt wrong with the connection then. It must be something else. Is anything else running in background?
TL.
ok so i think ive found my problem out, and it is not very reparable. i am on a T1 LAN at my university. there probably is a maximum bandwidth taht i can use, and 1.5 does not require near as much bandwidth as that horrible creation that is steam, and thus, my ping is insane. i heard steam is like running 1.5 and AOL at the same time. it sucks...
I think its possible to play 1.6 without steam in sure it was on the forums.
