Will it make a big difference and by worth the effort?
I am currently running a AMD 64 Processor 3200+ @ 2.02ghz
after a bit of research I have discovered that my motherboard can take the
AMD X2 range.
So I could get something like this off ebay for about Ã,£80
Manchester (90 nm SOI)
* CPU-Stepping: E4
* L1-Cache: 64 + 64 KB (Data + Instructions), per core
* L2-Cache: 256, 512 KB fullspeed, per core
* MMX, Extended 3DNow!, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, AMD64, Cool'n'Quiet, NX Bit
* Socket 939, HyperTransport (1000 MHz, HT1000)
* VCore: 1.35 V - 1.4 V
* Power Consumption (TDP): 89 Watt
* First Release: 1 August 2005
* Clockrate: 2000 - 2400 MHz
o 256 KB L2-Cache:
+ 3600+: 2000 MHz
o 512 KB L2-Cache:
+ 3800+: 2000 MHz
+ 4200+: 2200 MHz
+ 4600+: 2400 MHz (110 Watt TDP)
My question is, well, is it worth the money and effort?
I have a 9 series GFX card which I feel is being bottle necked by my current CPU.
What do you think guys?
Seems a bit expensive to me for what it is, especially when you can get this Motherboard (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-424-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481) for less then Ã,£50 and put this Quad core
CPU (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-259-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=803) in it for not too much more then your initial outlay !
Mind you you would still need to change your Ram, but I personally do not think spending money on a cpu of this vintage is a good idea.
Way to price. Must be available cheaper, if you want to stick with what you have.
Big price drop in cpu's @ Q1 2011 (Should be January)
Would wait until then if I were you.
But surely the jump will be a vast performance improvement?
It's not Ã,£80s worth of performance gain. I'd wait and see what processors do in the coming months and be prepared to spend a little more on a lot faster system. Considering THIS (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-035-OB&groupid=43&catid=339&subcat=1803) is only Ã,£250, there's much better things to spend your money on.
I'm considering an upgrade right now and my OLD system was an X2. I replaced it with a Q6600 and feel that's getting old. So spending Ã,£80 to put a little life into a 3-4 generation old system isn't good value for money.

T-Bag, how about selling your Q6600 + mobo + RAM to Zoots then?

Unfortunately I'm using it to replacing my media centre machine, hooking it up to my old 32" HDTV. And adding a steering wheel up to it to play F1 2010, to build a bit of a party machine. Since all my games are on Steam it means it's quite easy.
As for actually controlling the computer I've got an old wireless keyboard and mouse, but I think a wireless 360 controller and a nice software interface would make things a lot easier. I've been toying with python and the "Processing" computer language (which is simplified java) so might knock something up in one of those, or if all else fails Labview.
There are a lot of bottlenecks in the old x64 Athlon systems, including the PCIe version and more importantly the fact that the supported memory is only DDR.
The main difference will be that you find the system not stalling as much, as CPU intensive operations will end up being performed on one process while the other lets you carry on doing other stuff.
But it's definitely not Ã,£80 worth of improvement.
I'm still running an Athlon 64 x2 3800+ as my main PC (until later today hopefully) and it's on it's last lap of the gaming circuit as it can't handle BC2 at all really and certain ArmaII base maps kill it outright.
Its sounding like less and less of a good Idea.
Think I might go the Mobo+CPU+RAM route I don't want to spend too much money though.
