Title: GFX Card again
Post by: BrotherTobious on November 03, 2010, 04:47:31 PM
One of my 8800GTX have finaly given up the game :(  They did well first in TL Watercool beast then in my rig.

So now where to go I am thinking the new

460SOC

Or the

Sapphire HD 6870

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-sapphire-hd-6870-4200mhz-gddr5-gpu-900mhz-1120-stream-processors-dl-dvi-i-dvi-d-hdmi-mdp (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-sapphire-hd-6870-4200mhz-gddr5-gpu-900mhz-1120-stream-processors-dl-dvi-i-dvi-d-hdmi-mdp)

Not ever had a ATI card before and the 460 is most impressive on OB rig.

I welcome your views gentlemen.

I had a look at this.

GPU PassMark (http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html)

But I'm a little sceptic of the HD6870's score as it says it's faster that an HD5870, which it can't be, possibly down to the sample size and the fact that most HD6870's will be running on newer machines. Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow.

And always worth checking out the prices on Aria's SuperSpecials (http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Graphics+Cards/). The Sapphire card plus delivery comes in cheaper than SCAN's standard price.

I'm planning on getting a 6870. It's been a while since NVidia have been competitive on the price to performance ratio front. The last time was the 8800 series I had the GTS version. They've seemed over priced since then considering the 4870 (my current card) was the beginning of NVidia being trounced performance wise for a while. It looks like they're coming back, but still not quite there.
That's my opinion anyway.

Bro, I've got sli GTX 460 and they rock - I went for the MSI Cyclones - read some reviews and the cooling etc seemed good. Probably all much of a muchness and you can o/c them yourselves. But you won't be dissapointed whichever 460 you get - I was amazed at how small these things are in comparison to my 4870 which it replaced. 100 fps in BC2 - if you can stretch to sli I'd highly recommend it :)

Hey.. is your other card for sale?..

Not sure however if I could SLI to different brands of 8800's however. Are they the overclocked variety?

You can mix the brands, just as long as they have the same chipsest, memory, clock speeds etc.
