Title: Razer Naga MMO/WOW Mouse - seriously tempting
Post by: TeaLeaf on November 09, 2010, 05:05:26 PM
I have been using a Logitech G5 mouse for years now for several reasons: I prefer a larger mouse and I prefer at least 2 thumb buttons.  Surprisingly, it's quite difficult to find larger mice *and* lots of buttons, I have no idea why.

However as a raiding healer in an MMO game like World of Warcraft I often find myself wanting more thumb buttons as I bind my most frequently used heals & abilities to the mouse, so fewer mouse buttons means more buttons with 'other' key combos added.   For example, with only 2 thumb buttons I end up using Alt-Button5 combo or Shift-Button4 etc bound to the usual  Clique & Grid (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?28870-How-to-use-amp-configure-the-Grid-amp-Clique-addons).

If I had more thumb buttons on my G5 mouse I could make more direct button binds and then not have to have the additional keyboard buttons used in combo at the same time.  This would  frees up my 'keyboard hand' to be doing other useful things, like moving out of fire etc!

However my G5 is getting old and this little puppy might just tempt me to replace it.

The new Razer Naga MMO mouse:

Unlike the Steel Series mouse that had seemingly major reliability issues, this offering from Razer appears to have been made to last and initial reports of it are tremendously encouraging.

The mouse itself has drivers for the latest OS, including Windows 7 & Mac OS X (v10.4 and above).  The mouse provides 5600dpi sensitivity with a 1ms response time and up to 200 inches per second tracking speed.

The MAJOR advance though is the massive 17 buttons, including 12 buttons for your thumb.  The mouse is also heavily optimised for WoW with an addon (included with the CD or downloadable using the Curse.com Addon tool) that works like Bartender4 to help customise your UI to create a 12 button 'grid' on your UI (see below picture) which mirrors the binds you have set up for each of the buttons:

This means you can now bind just abut every ability you use directly to a thumb button which will make a major improvement in reaction time.  It should also avoid those annoying times when your keyboard does not register that you have pressed the e.g. 'Alt' button and your Alt-Button4 emergency heal combo fails!  As well as the expected PVE performance improvements, I expect this mouse will also be a major benefit to PVP players as a direct bind on the mouse will bring massive speed gains.

The mouse seems to be right for me size wise, it's about 116mm x 69mm x 41.6mm (LxWxD) which seems to compare ok to my G5 which is about 125x70x40mm, so those with a preference for a larger mouse might find it a good fit.

The mouse works like any other 'normal' 17 button mouse(!), but currently both WoW and Warhammer have the additional custom software support which allows heavy customisation in-game for players using this mouse.

My wallet is out.  If you play WoW or Warhammer a lot then you might want to get yours out too as this mouse looks a stunner!

Tea, how do the top & top buttons feel?

Is it the G5 sort of touch, or the usual razer "rubbery" stuff?

Also, any idea if the middle button moves to the sides like the G5?  Mine's a bit wobbly so middle button usage was drastically reduced.

No idea as I do not have one, but I am looking for one and this caught my eye.  From the reviews I have seen all bar one really liked it and the one that did not like it I do not think installed it properly as he had problems nobody else did.  But 12 buttons works for me, it's more than I need which means I can do everything I want to do via the mouse.

Ah, ok.

I usually go with logitech as they're usually a perfect fit.  Never liked razer mice tbh as they tend to be quite uncomfortable.  This one does look similar to the logitech design though so I'm not sure yet.

I'll be needing a new mouse soon, as my G5 is showing signs of ageing.  Had to scrape off most of the top area as the paint looked like it had osmosis, and the sensitivity buttons aren't working so well any more.

It is indeed a very fine implement for pointing and raining down fps based death on people.
