Title: Core 2 Duo E6600 or E6700 needed
Post by: DuVeL on November 11, 2010, 11:48:53 AM
Hey all, it seems that for CoD - Black Ops I need a Core 2 Duo E6600 as a minimum, it seems they don't sell them anymore in the shops so I was wondering if anyone had one laying around or maybe a E6700.

My current computerspecs are;
Shuttle SD37P2,
BFG 8800 GTS OC2
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Corsair 2x 1024 - 5400 C4Pro.

Why dont you go for the Duo Core E8400,it's not much more money.

From a compexpert I heard I needed to check for Busspeed or something. It seems the Busspeed for my E6400 is 1066 MHz FSB and the one you found is the same. This one might work and the shop is closeby.

My computer is a Shuttle and according to an employee of Shuttle my SD37P2 is not compatible with the motherboard of the E8400.

He's saying this;
The fastest CPU for your system is a Core 2 Duo E6700 which is not available anymore unless someone is selling it online.
The newer core 2 Duo processors E8400 and E8500 are still available but wont work on your Shuttle. (Upgrading your motherboard is not option).
Unfortunatly there are no upgrade possibilities for your Shuttle unless you can get something by onlineselling.

Remember, DuVeL is not a complete computerg33k when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Mhhhm, it might be better if I had posted this in; "The Exchange"-forum part btw...

EDIT;
I found the E6700 on Azerty also; http://azerty.nl/0-923-282737/processor-1-x-intel-pentium-.html

Is this one also compatible?

I don't think you'll see much of a performance boost upgrading from a 6400 to the 6700 - it's not worth the money.

In my opinion, you're better off saving your money and going to a Core 2 Quad/i5 system when you can afford the motherboard, RAM etc.

The thing is that it's for my Shuttle which is also my main PC and upgrading the SD37P2 is not possible I think, I've posted also on Sudhian, a bareboneforum where I hopefully get some more suggestions how I can upgrade my Shuttle big time when it's needed.
If I can upgrade my Shuttle now for 70 Euros and it plays okay with the current games then I'll be happy (christmaspresent for myself)..

I think what Tutonic meant is that is 70e worth the extra 1 or 2 fps ? Even with that 6700 you are at the low requirements bar right ? I mean if you pay the 70e and still can't play the game because of bad graphics or slowing down it is not worth it, or maybe even buy some more memory to help it out.

First of all I would just try the game to see how it works out with your current setup.

That's exactly what I meant Lex. If it were me I'd save the money that would buy me a small boost, and put it towards saving for a new system that might double the performance. I just don't think the E6700 is going to give you great 'bang for buck'.

This is the major disadvantage of Shuttle systems, they're a PITA to upgrade :(

He did try to run the game last night and it was poor he said.
But for the E6700 your right,it makes not much difference.

q6600?

Isn't this the same socket?

Ninja had the e6600 and I had the e6300 both of us are on q6600's and everythings running fine for me anyway.

When I check; "Can you run it" the only thing it says is that the E6400 needs to be upgraded for the game.
I can't afford a whole upgrade as it's to expensive atm for a Shuttle and an E6700 is only 70 Euros.
I reckon I could try it.

These are some off the Error messages I get while playing in 800x600-mode even are these;
--------------------
[11/11/10 18:16:37] module: dsetup32(Jun  2 2010), file: dsinline.h, line: 391, function: GetLangCodePage
    Failed API:  VerQueryValue()
    Error:  (1813) - Kan het opgegeven brontype niet vinden in het kopiebestand.

    Unable to get Translation valie.
--------------------
Kan het opgegeven brontype niet vinden in het kopiebestand = means: Can't find the directed sourcetype in the copyfile.

Also; DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error.
And; Direct3DDevice9: Present Failed: Ran out of memory.

I have DirectX 9.0c atm.

As ghost says the Q series are a better bet. Same socket. The most you''ll likely have to do is update the bios if your motherboard is too old. But as others have said, the price is too much.
My old graphics card was a 8800 and I ran it with a Q6600. If you did get the CPU you'd want to upgrade graphics to something a little more recent too. I'd save your money for a couple of months. New intel processors around the corner should bring prices of the current ones down, and 6870s and some more cards are starting to come out, again pushing prices down. You'll pick up some bargains if you can be a little patient.

T-Bag, the thing is, my computer is a Shuttle SD37P2. It has survived many LANs and now there seems to be a great (but still buggy) game out. I'm not sure how I can upgrade my Bios with my Shuttle or such. I think I'll try and do some searching around and see if I can find any good answers on how to upgrade or such, the Shuttle costed me alot of overhours and has been perfect so far except with this game.
Any suggestions are welcome.

NP's here too. I think Pete's MB may be the limiting factor. Unless there's a Bios for it it won't run even if it does fit..

Updating a bios these days is relatively easy. It's done from in windows.

If the game isn't running right when others do, then the usual options are a good bet. Turn down settings, update graphics drivers etc.

Failing that the Core2Duo series are reasonable overclockers, so that might be worth looking into too.

T-bag is right.

Even my motherboard didn't allow my q6600 as i had to do a bios update.

Look into it pete as a q6600 would be better value for money.

I think Dewey and Suicidal Monkey had one each for sale so pm them.

Guys.. Quick reality check.. Pete's rig is almost 3 years old. While there may be a beta BIOS he could try, the reality is that there might not be one that is available that will support the Q6600.

I agree that the Q6600 would be the better choice but if there's no BIOS it's a non starter no matter how easy it is to update...

I reckon I need to check some Shuttle forums and such then to see if it'll work or not.
I have upgraded my graphicscarddrivers and updated DirectX.

@Tbag, me and updating a Bios, only if I have an exact walkthroughguide.
I'll do some Googling this weekend...

Thanks atleast for the replies so far guys.

EDIT;
Might have found something here; http://global.shuttle.com/download03.jsp?PI=187&OS=4
After some quick Googling it seems it might work, need to check more, also send another email to the Dutch Shuttleshop...

EDIT2;
I have the Shuttle since 2006.
After another few quicksearches it seems possible and there are several Shuttle SD37P2's with a Q6600 in them.

I just got a reply back from the Shuttlesite; The supportlist for the SD37P2; http://au.shuttle.com/support_list03.jsp?PI=639 and in there is the Coreâ„¢2 Quad Intel Coreâ„¢2 Quad Q6600 2.40 GHz I reckon you guys are talking about.
