Just putting this out there: if we've got a compatible wheel handy, how about setting up a PS3 playing Gran Turismo 5 for the hot laps?

It's a better racing game than NFS, and you wouldn't have to sacrifice your PC.

My projector I think will work with the ps3 connectors.  Will check,  I don't have a wheel but I am sure someone might

An HDMI to DVI cable should do the trick if the projector hasn't got an HDMI input.

True, but remeber we were using a monitor for the person to drive on and then pushing image to the projector.  I think it would be eaiser to run it on a pc then we dont have to wait to cross while people are we driving.  Unless we can do dual with PS3

Unless we somehow make use of the pull-down screen at the end of the room? I like the idea of using the projector for driving instead of a monitor.

Maybe we should just bring the kit along, and see if we can get it set up in a sensible way. If it doesn't work out we can always fall back to the PC.

bloody hell that sounds like a good idea.   You bringing the ps3?

I dont think the screen will play as you will blind all of them in the last row :) dont a bad ideas if we are playing them in a comp :P

We've got some projectors lying about at work I can probably borrow if needed, including one of the tiny fag packet ones.

I do have a USB wheel and pedals
somewhere I could be talked into donating.

Ooooh would you mind bringing the little one if you can Benny? If nothing else I thought about buying one but have no idea how good they are in reality so it would be good to see. Thanks

Have we got a game to replace the traditional CS tourney?

I didn't realise CS needed to be replaced...

I'd like to have a Black Ops comp if  there's enough interest, but I don't trust the game to work properly on the hotel network (AFAIK, we'd have to use our internet server) :(

Black ops and BF BC2  wont work due to network

I'd happily replace the CS tourney. It's really tired now.

So we need a multi-player team game that we can run on a local server at the LAN.

And we need to make sure that there are enough people who have the game and if they don't that it is cheap and easy to get either prior to or at the LAN.

L4D?

Breach? (http://store.steampowered.com/app/72300/)

It's cheap, and roughly similar.

We should take care about dropping CS. It's the one game we can all play and all know how to play. It's easy to set up and is a staple of the tournaments we run, CS and Deagle. CS is getting tired I agree, but it's a currently a core part of the weekend. Yes we'll need to replace it at some point, but we will need something to replace it with. What is there that is fun, everyone who attends the LAN has installed and has a bullet proof dedicated server we can run? I cannot think of anything.

It's not like CS takes up all the weekend either, a few rounds, a good laugh & it was all over & done with last Lan

Another game that springs to mind is Day Of Defeat: Source (http://store.steampowered.com/app/300/)

Right,

We know we can successfully run a L4D/2 comp last year, I think this should be played.
The Hot Lap Comp I feel is now a must (format to be sured up.)

I think that 4/5 is the most comps we can successful run on one day.

I think now what we do is take the rest of the list and throw it open to the community and see what we get back.  We all know the limitations that we have on us.

And if we want to try anything like breach we need a bit of testing and if we can also ask the Server guys if it is possible to get that done would be great.

Any thoughts?

Sorry if I am treading on toes dont mean to be just want to keep this moving time is running short.

Would like nfs: shift 2, split second and tf2 added to the list to.

dod source could work also as tut says we all have it!

On a side note some LAN attendees don't check the forum so i am not sure of the response rate to the voting would be.

I'd also like the voting to be public so we know only LAN go'ers have voted!

I reckon we could resurrect BF2, it'd be fun.
Breach is cheap and cheerful.
Dogfighter ditto.
Shame so many games these days have rented server only:(

any chance of cracked servers?

NvG is asking what games he should get for the LAN, what do I tell him?

Guys,

I was speaking to Pen about games and cost. Cost will always be an issue for folks so we have to keep it reasonable... However..

If there are games that we can plan on a "demo" version for the lan that we can run ourselves off a box our our lan server then I think we should consider it.

As for the TimeTrial on a PS3 or other console I'm fine with it. The owner accepts the responsibility as dMw will not.

Any thoughts on a sim or turn based challenge? I see that Shogun 2 is out on demo. Not sure if it needs a internet connection to work however.

NF

Couple more days and I'd like to put together a final list.

Ghosty crew play a RTS not sure what it is, but not sure how we could work it in to a competiton, Unless we do table vs them selves. Then the winners from each table play.  But as each game can take 2 hours, unless we play rush then it turns to who can click faster, based on when I used to play, something to think about.

Arma 2 OA we have a map being built (well I asked :) ) We wont run this as a compertition but we can run that on Sat night or Friday night.

BF2 it a fun idea, but I dont have my discs anymore and I am not sure that we will be able to run it on Win 7 machines, Ghosty what was your results from installing?  I am a little worried that if we try to much we wont have enough time to test.

Its Age of empires 3 which most people will have got when it was free or 99p can't remember a few months back!

I can install it and it should work.

Most people have it.

But shouldn't we try something new like tf2 or dod:s?

Most people have those too?

Saves havign to hunt around for the bf2 discs and key which i am going to have to do too!

My understanding is that tf2 was tried as the communinty awhile ago and it was not liked. But I could be wrong I have it and I like and most people got the orange box as you say so we could use it.

Busy so this will be be succinct.

Any AoE game will be too long to run and take too long for people to learn.
We tried TF2 it it was not liked as it was deemed to be too cartoony. However on a Friday night when everyone's had a few it may have potential

Agreed TF2 was a giggle but we never picked it up as a supported game, as it only had novelty value for us. It might be fun as a Friday night tourny. From memory I think we just played big 10-15 a side games. I'd certainly be up for a bit of black Scottish Cyclops mayhem.

As for Shogun 2, it's normal for the demo to be the single player introductory training levels and no more, so I doubt there will be any content we can play at the LAN sadly. From memory there were a few Starcraft 2 games going on but it's a Hard Core RTS and we'd have to have full copies. Also the difference between a new player and someone with experience is huge, so first time players will get the snot kicked out of them every time.

TF2 is insanely good fun, with the addition of beer it becomes hillarious.

A friday night TF2 server would be a great idea, imo :)

If we can, let's set a deadline up for the 1st March to get the format up and posted. That'll give us four weeks. Good work chaps :thumbsup2:

As per my original deadline what I wanted to propose was options.

It looks like we have the time-trial all sowed up.

Other than that there hasn't been anything truely new to consider tbh. Outside of the usual standard I don't see one new game that dMw is supporting that it can support at the LAN.

What I would like to present to the attendees is a list that we can / will play on our servers and a list that we can not but may be supported. It's no one's fault but the Hotel so let's hope our discussions with them this time are fruitful.

In Any Case.... Games suggested so far on this thread:

Arma 2 OA (LAN Server)
CoD 4 (LAN Server)
L4D 1/2 (LAN Server)
Deagle (LAN Server)
NFS: Shift Flying Lap (Projector)
Unreal Tournement 3 (LAN Server)
Battlefield 2 (LAN Server)
Breach (new purchase)
Soldat (LAN Server)
NFS:Split Second (LAN Server)
Dogfighter (LAN Server)
TF2 (???)
NFSS 2 (???)

Please let me know if I've missed any out.. do not suggest new games at this point please. ty

Counter Strike:Source (I know deagle is on the list but I'd like to see normal CS:S as an option as it's the best fun of the LAN for me as most people have it).

dod:s and tf2 are missing from both polls on the forum aswell as LFD.

LFD 1/2 is there as a choice.

TF2 I thought we ruled out but obviously not.. My apologies.

DOD:S was never supported by dMw (less than TF2) and as only one person posted about it I didn't think it had any legs.

Sorry but you're a bit late to the party to start chiming in now..
