Title: FTTP Trial - User Experience
Post by: TeaLeaf on February 16, 2011, 02:18:25 PM
I managed to get on the FTTP/FTTH trial via Brightstar (who also host dMw's servers) and whilst the initial installation took all day yesterday and did not end up working, some tweaking on the settings by BT this morning got it up and running.

So, this was my previous ADSL speed via Brightstar's excellent service.

And now that I have FTTP via Brightstar I am getting this:

At the moment during the trial BT restrict the FTTP download speed to about 40Mbps maximum, so I am pretty happy with the current speeds.  In July when the trials end, the cap is lifted and it should increase to the full 100Mbps down and 30Mbps upload speeds.

Dave & Mark @ Brightstar have been brilliant throughout, always on the phone with me updating me, talking me through setting changes and I am really glad that they were my ISP - they come highly recommended if you want a quality service.

This is one happy Milton Keynes bunny....

Just did a test on a laptop using a wireless connection to the router and it registered a whopping 49Mbps down and 29Mbps upload.  Jayzus!  I just watched my first ever High Definition programme on BBC iPlayer - damn impressive!

Out of interest what prices are you paying TL for your service and what are the download caps?

It's great news to finally hear that your not stuck on the old copper line anymore!

I think you've earned that nice connection TL, having to put up with shoddy broadband all these years.

Welcome to the 50meg club!

That is a very impressive upload and very good download.

I am glad to see that areas of the country without cable and outside of London are beginning to get around 50meg speeds.

Buy a NAS or SAN and begin to mirror Usenet =).

What are the ISP like in terms of capping usage or traffic shaping on particular ports?

Like Tutonic I am on 50 meg in the Cambridge area (and I actually get the full down and full up) but Virgin Media are beginning to crack down some on usages at during daylight hours. I am interested to see if this is the case with your ISP?

Enjoy =)

Well,it's a trial BT are running so at the moment there are no prices to compare it to, other than BT#s indication to ISPs that it would probably be charged at the same level as top end BT Infinity products.

Brightstar host the dMw servers and also those of several members or their businesses, so they are not a residential ISP and don't play in the 'pile it high sell it cheap' market, but they do my residential ADSL for me and now my fibre.  The flip side of that though is that my connection only has business contention ratios (much lower than residential), I have an un-capped & un-shaped service, and most importantly of all, I know that when I telephone them I get through to people I know talk English and will deal with any problems, have met at our LANs (yes they attended one a couple of years ago) and drunk beers with.  Mark & Dave @ Brightstar are top blokes and deliver a great service, so whilst I know their monthly charges will never be as low as some of the 'big' players, I am happy to pay whatever their cost is as there is no way that I would ever get the same high quality service from the big players as I get from Brightstar.      For my ADSL connection it probably cost me about £7 per month more than a 'big player', but I got many times more back in service quality.  By all means consider Brightstar as your ISP, but not if you're P2P/downloading whore as it is not what they want and certainly not what they deserve.
