Title: Logitech Performance Mouse MX (AVOID)
Post by: DrunkenZombiee on February 18, 2011, 10:58:58 AM
In the past I have been a big Fan of Logitech Premium Products as I have a DiNovo Edge which I am still using currently and its by far the best Media keyboard I have ever used.

I needed to replace my Logitech MX revolution mouse which after 4 years of hard use had very little charging capacity. As I loved the last mouse with its build quality, configuration options and geeky fancy gearing system, I opted for the "replacement" Logitech Performance mouse MX.

So... At arrived in a fancy box from AMAZON, lots of kit with it in a nice little pouch. First thing I noticed was the poor build quality compared the the MX revolution. The new mouse was half a weight and didn't feel as robust in the hand. All of the buttons and switches felt "cheap" not what I was expecting.

Anyway, the tracking on the mouse is amazing and very very nice! absolute precision on any surface due to the "Dark Field" technology. Well done Logitech. Rather than sending back right away I thought I would give it a try as there was something I liked about it.

Over time I became more depressed when I found out if you pressed the button to change between free-wheel and stepping when in free-wheel it made a horrible plasticy grinding sound due to the lack of a gearing system of the old one.

The final straw yesterday was when in game with dMw members playing pistols only on BC2 and my weapon kept changing to my primary one for no reason as I wasn't touching the scroll-wheel. This caused a few interesting moments when I had the drop on people and ended up running away from them as I didn't want to blast them with an MG on pistols only. I spent ages checking the key mapping and making sure I wasn't fingering AWSD incorrectly and hitting the number keys by accident.

Half way through the night I figured it out. Picking the mouse up and dropping it slightly was causing the mouse-wheel to move up or down. So doing a 180 degree turn then re-adjusting your mouse into the middle of the pad was causing me to change weapon most of the time.

Did a shake test this morning and I can scroll up and down pages by shaking the mouse in mid air.

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!

I don't think I am going to buy a logitech device again as all of their products have gone way downhill since about 4 years ago.

I am sending back to AMAZON and looking for a replacement mouse. Any recommendations anyone? I like lots of buttons, but they need to be clustered well and the mouse has ergonomic for right-hand only.

I recently got the G9X (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/5092) to replace my Razer Copperhead which was scrolling wildly.
I reckon it's the biz.
A choice of bodies, wide or not-so-wide, and an adjustable weight system. I use the wide and max weights.
The scroll wheel has a lovely clunky feel but isn't hard to roll, and with a click of a button turns into a free-rolling wheel that gets to the bottom of a long page with just 1 roll.
The only con for me, and it is a very minor one, is that the braided cord is a little inflexible.
Best mouse I've ever bought.

The copperhead had 4 "thumb" buttons, 2 each side. I only ever used the 2 thumb-side ones as I couldn't get my fingers onto the others, but the mouse is symetrical so useful for left-hookers.
The G9x only has 2 thumb buttons and is only suitable for right-handers.

The wheel on the G9x also clicks left and right, so this makes up for the lack of extra buttons.

Seems scrolling is a weak point in a few mice. I am still waiting for the replacement for my RAT7 which I returned due to the scroll wheel packing up after 4 months, I am back to using a logitech 518 which really is quite hard to beat for a gaming mouse, and its fairly cheap nowadays.

Pffff! I'd have machine-gunned them in the face, and then blamed my mouse.

Have to agree though, the build quality of the newer Logitech kit isn't as good as it used to be. I used an MX518 for years before it finally kicked the bucket, and replaced it with the G5 which is still going strong.

Lots of buttons = Razer naga.  Very happy with mine after using several models of the Logitech G5 for previous 5 years or so.

May just flog the RAT when it comes back and get a Roccat Kone (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-008-RC&groupid=702&catid=23&subcat=1257) or possibly a G500 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-176-LG&groupid=702&catid=23&subcat=1257)

Avoid the G500 as it has the same scroll wheel as the one I am returning.

A lot of people are also having this issue as it seems to be the new design of the free wheel scroll wheel.

The Naga looks interesting. Shame you cant try before you buy.

I have been looking at the Cyborg series which all have good reviews.

The RAT is one of the Cyborg mice, only survived 4 months, may of had a duff one I suppose, pity as I really liked the design.

Doh!

Look like TeaLeaf's suggestion may be the best then. Not heard of anything going wrong with the Razer series.

I dont think I need so many buttons tbh, and I think I may catch them accidently with my thumb the way I hold my mouse, I think the Naga is a mouse for pixie players really.

Looks like I'll give the Roccat a go.

Both my Copperhead and Tox's Krait suffered from scroll wheel problems.
Mine skipped and jumped as I scrolled and the tyre on Tox's span round the wheel without actually moving the wheel.
Both suffered from sweat stains and looked old prematurely

Deja-vu here.

Imo, Logitech are the best mice.  Again, I've only had Logitech mice before and they were all used every single day for 5years+ and they still function.

You should consider the G5 series - best mouse I've ever had.  Feels solid, the only downside is the paint touching my palm going bubbly due to excessive use and sweaty + hot hands.

Might be worth trying to just get a replacement then and see if I got a dud one?

Seems like no-one can recommend a better one and everyone has their own horror stories.... If not I might try and find an old MX revolution on ebay.

Got home from Newcastle an hour ago to find my replacement mouse.

I have to say that it is a lot better! I can use the middle click now and no weird scrolling issue.

Happy now!
