Title: Time Trial Comp - Platform, Map, Car, Prize
Post by: Gone_Away on February 23, 2011, 11:01:27 PM
If we are going to run this on a console I'd like to understand the setup as well as track, car, and rig.

Thanks,

NF

If we're using Gran Turismo 5, why don't we re-create the 'Star-in-a-reasonably-priced-car'?

Something relatively mundane (Ford Focus maybe? I believe the RS is in the game if you want something nippy but there's plenty of small family cars to choose from :P ) on the Top Gear Test Track. 3 practice laps followed by 3 timed laps - fastest one counts.

FYI here's a complete list of all the cars (http://www.gran-turismo.com/local/jp/data1/products/gt5/carlist_en.html) and tracks (http://www.gran-turismo.com/local/jp/data1/products/gt5/courselist_en.html) in GT5.

Plenty to choose from.

Nice idea but have to admit I do perfer the more grunty kinda of cars. Tut, how we going to sort out sound for this mate can we plug Headset straight in?

Also I think to place this on the same table as the server as we can then set up the wheel and also have a clear shot of the wall for the projector.

I need a hdmi to dvi connector if anyone has one.

I'm guessing we plug a headset/speakers into the projector - the PS3 outputs sound down the HDMI connection.

QuoteI need a hdmi to dvi connector if anyone has one.

I might be able to "borrow" something ;)

have to check that the dvi will do sound out via this connection mate it is a slighty older model.

What sort of sound inputs does your projector have? We could use a component cable.

I'm liking the Top Gear track with a Corsa Comfort. Easy to mock up a magnetic board for the times that come in over the weekend too. You can then do it as an ad hoc event instead of set windows for competition. Obviously the game admins go first and get the ball rolling.

I fired up GT5 last night to have a look at cars/tracks.

The bad news, is that to unlock the Top Gear Test Track in time trial mode you have to get a gold trophy for the VW camper van race in career mode. For anyone who hasn't tried this, let me assure you that it is nails hard. The chances of me being able to do this in time for the LAN are slim, since I'm crap at racing.

The good news is we can choose just about any car we can think of.

Well get cracking, I will also try to get it unlocked.  If we cant then we can just use another track. You have a racing steering wheel dont you Tut, as I only have a controller.

Nope - I don't have a wheel.

I was kinda hoping that someone's PC wheel would be compatible...

ahhhhh feck, right we need to get a message out to them attending to see if they have one or we are going to have to revert to stealing ninja rig and wheel or wheel for someone else rig.

Ninja want me to drop a message or do you want to hang it and do the orginal set up?
Title: Time Trial Comp - Platform, Map, Car, Prize

You can get the track by doing 5 barrel rolls?

Why don't we have a race round March in DA's souped up 1989 Golf with a fake GTi sticker? We can probably cull a few locals, which would be no bad thing.

It's kinda geeky, but can we get a magnetic board to put the times on? I'll poke around here and see what we have, we need the magnetic strips to stick it up with.

This is really shaping up to be a good'un.

I could run this on my leech but not sure how well it would fare. The GPU isn't the best but it's not shocking..

If we run it on my spare rig we can leave it running all of the time.

I really like the idea of the Top Gear Star in a Car thing too. Too bad I could have picked up a T from Beaulieu that said "I am The Stig". Might still be able to swing by there and get one.. I think there a tenner.

I've got a PC steering wheel and pedals. Only a basic logitech set that I could bring if you think it would work.

Post by: Tutonic on February 25, 2011, 05:03:56 PM
If we want to use GT5, I can only see three problems right now:

1. We need someone to provide a PS3-compatible steering-wheel & pedals.
2. There's a slim chance that the PS3 won't play nice with Toby's projector, but this should just be a case of getting hold of the correct cable (HDMI out, DVI in).
3. I'm a bit too rubbish to unlock the Top Gear track (I'm trying, damn it!).

I suggest I bring the PS3 anyway (might be fun to have some games of Fifa/whatever on it, especially on the projector), and if we can't get Gt5 working properly we fall back to using Shift on Ninja's PC (as long as you're cool with that Ninja).

Snooks whats the model number of your wheel also Ninja whats your make and model.  If we have to fall back to your leach I have a 8800gtx going spare, dont know if it is more powerful than the one you are running atm.

I will test connections of PS3 to Projector this coming week / weekend depending on life.  Which will give us a better idea of where we are.

But some good news sports fans

I have just unlocked the Top Gear Test Track and we can use it with any car.  So moving slowly forward but it is shaping up rather well :)

sounds good lads if you can both bring them that would be great.

Also been thinking about this, as it will be a bugger to drive looking at the wall instead of a monitor.  The projector is for all to watch and make comments:)  The screen wont work IMHO as it placement is right above the back row of the tables.

Been looking into this and the only way I can see this working is getting a HDMI Splitter which will out put 2 HDMI devices.  so the drive can drive on a monitor, and the rest can watch.

I have found this it might work HDMI output splitter (http://www.expansys.com/startech-hdmi-1-to-2-mf-splitter-cable-201796/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=base)

Anyone else have any better ideas as the PS3 wont do it!

Had look for reviews doesnt look good :(

Good point Toby. I'd probably try racing using the projector but it might not be practical.

An HDMI splitter should work, and this one (http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=hdmi+splitter&hl=en&safe=off&biw=1309&bih=964&prmd=ivns&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=1439228767989769708&sa=X&ei=hLdsTc2KC4mFhQf0kbX-Aw&ved=0CHEQ8wIwAA#) looks cheaper.

Had a look at my projector and if I have read it right I looks like I can use that as a splitter, so going to test on wed.  So the

ps3 Hdmi - Dvi Projector,
Projector Dsub to Dvi monitor.

Hope it works :)

And ordered as it was only a £5

Right time for a update,

PS3 works with Projector,
PS3 works with monitor,

PS3 doesn't work with splitter in to Projector and Monitor, the PS3 doesn't have enough grunt and it pretty dodgy splitting hdmi anyway.

Any ideas guys ?

Why not do it like last time?

Console control versus wheel is very very different and we already have the PCs and the wheels there.  I suspect most drivers would not bother to enter the competition if they have their PC and wheel with them, it's more fun with the wheel /pedals than it it with a console control and we already know a projector works form a PC.  That's my 2 cents.

Agreed TL, this PS3 setup would be using a wheel, it looks like we can stick NF or Snooks wheel in and that would work.  It was suggested to use the PS3 as it has GT5 which has the Top Gear Test Track so we could do our own version of stars in a reasonable priced car.  Also it freed up Ninja not having to share his machine, which I know he wouldnt mind but still.

My thoughts on this now at the moment is this.

We abandon the PS3, would of been fun but the set up is a PITA.  I still have a few ideas to try but I am not hopeful.

If Ninja is cool with it, using his leech machine, install Shift and his wheel, copy his profile across :)  to open it all.  Then stick my 8800gtx in to Ninja machine and run it from there.  Thus giving us the setup that will work and leaving Ninja with a machine he can use all weekend.

Ninja would you be cool with this?

Either way we will have this competition running with the wheel and projector :)

I may actually have to buy & install that as it was great fun last time.  Hot Pursuit (£30 on Steam) or Shift (£15 on Steam) though?

That looks a better splitter, but it's pricey.

Shame, I really wanted to see the comp using the Top Gear track - would have been excellent fun.

I might bring my PS3 down anyway, and hook it up to my PC monitor for Fifa/Madden/Street-Fighter fun.

Now, I was drunk last night, but my logic still stands. I see that we should carry on down the NFS path, but let's see what the community come up with in terms of getting the dual screen working.

I have a magnetic notice board I can bring if we get it working..
Title: Time Trial Comp - Platform, Map, Car, Prize
Post by: BrotherTobious on March 10, 2011, 12:37:31 PM
Bring the board anyways mate.

I have one more test to do but the issue is that my spare monitor is not HDCP complient and it has to be. Ninja whats your spare monitor mate make and model.  I may have found away to split it but its a hail mary of a pass and may not pull off.

As to recording the laps, quite difficult as the box to do it is expensive and also displaying at the same time on 2 differnt things is going to be a big ask from a cheap set up.

As you say stay with NFS:shift, I will keep trying.

Guys,

On the prizes, what are your thoughts on a reg plate with DMW XIX on it?

Not sure on costs but they can't be that much can they? Was thinking that we could get three done. 1st and 2nd with the First place racer getting a bottle or something. The third plate we could put DMR XIX for the Live for Speed race..

Thoughts?
