Title: Best starter class for a n00b
Post by: DrunkenZombiee on March 14, 2011, 10:16:49 AM
Currently downloading the WoW installation files for my trial account and its going to take some time due to the poor connection speed I am getting to the WoW servers (tried P2P and non P2P and cant get above about 500k DL).

Anyway... I am new to MMO RPG's and to be honest have purposely avoided them in the past as they do tend to consume a lot of time. I now feel its time to Dip my toe into the water as its something I might enjoy but I have deprived myself of till now.

What class would you recommend for a complete n00b. Most people seem to recommend a paladin for starter players but the more I look into it the more complicated it gets as i also need to pick a race, profession etc.

Any recommendations would be gratefully received as I am a complete novice.

Thanks in Advance.

DZ.

All classes are now easy to play since Blizzard tweaked them. The first 20 levels are very straight forward and gives a very nice learning curve for any class. However my personal recommendation is a Hunter. You now get a pet at level one, have zero downtime and can pretty much blaze through the game. The complaint about hunters is that they are too easy with only a handful of buttons to press and some very simple combinations of attacks. So this would be a bonus for a new player. Like some of the other classes (Shaman) you get a speed run buff spell (Aspect of the Cheetah) fairly early on which is good. I'd also go with Skinning and Leatherworking, with either mining or herbalism as the third profession for generating some extra gold). Skinning is the only gathering profession where you can loot other peoples kills (you skin their beast kills) so you level it fast.

however no class is really that hard to play and enjoy. The important question is what do you want to do end game. once your character is Lv 85 then you're stuck with them. If you want to raid or PvP then you would be wise to pick a class that you find interesting. they come in the following types - healers, tanks and DPS. If you think you might like to heal in Instances then clearly that's going to effect your choice.

The only real rule is always roll a Dwarf as any other race is rubbish by comparison

Hi there mate :-)

Here is a little read from wowwiki: http://www.wowwiki.com/Choosing_a_class
I would recommend; The first time you log in, to read about the different classes.
I've tried all classes, except the rogue, but I cant really say I prefer on over another.

There are in end-game (level 85) different roles to fill, and this is where the versatile paladins and druids come in. These classes can fill all 3 roles (tank, dps, healer). Personally, I think you should go for the one you find most interesting. And if you feel its not "you". Then choose a different one.

Good luck on that important choice :-D

Went with a human paladin because I am boring and someone told me they are one of the better combos.

I am about lvl 8 but I messed up a mission and only have 12 slots for loot (used the fire extinguisher on a tree not a vineyard... DOH!). I need to find another bag somewhere and some decent gear as finding it a bit of a struggle to do a few of the missions on my own. I have to heal all the time =(.

Name of char is Drunkenzombi

Not sure what I think of the game at the moment. Perhaps when your in a group its more fun?

You'll find bags as quest rewards, you can buy them from vendors and they sell in the auction house. So you should not go short of a storage space. A class survives quests either by doing masses of damage and killing the monster fast or being a survivor and taking the hits well. As an example a rogue is lightly armoured and cannot take a beating. however as a melee fighter with no ranged attacks a rogue needs to be close to hit it's opponent. However now it's opponent can hit it back. So rogues do lots of damage very quickly, dodge about a lot and kill the monster before it can do any damage to them. On the other hand a warrior is high armour and so can take a beating. it can last longer in a fight due to it's plate mail, stamina etc. The warrior does less damage than the rogue but takes less as well. A paladin has the added bonus of healing. So it relies a little less on sheer armour and a big health pool and more on it's ability to self heal as it fights, something neither the rogue or warrior can do (without potions).

Different classes will work in different ways to achieve the same result, killing their enemy. As a paladin it's OK to heal yourself. Some  quests will be hard and you will not be able to do them without a group but the quest notes will highlight this. Finally weapons and armour will almost always come from completing quests. You can craft your own gear (blacksmithing) or buy from the Auction house but frankly you can do fine questing in gear you get as rewards from previous quests. Blizzard have worked it all out so gear scales up as you level.

Hope this helps but there is a good resource at WOWwiki  (http://www.wowwiki.com/Portal:World_of_Warcraft)and a nice Paladin guide (http://www.wowwiki.com/Paladin) there too.

Finally here (http://www.wowwiki.com/Equipment) is a quick guide to gear in WOW

What sever did you decide to play on ?  ... If its Aszune then grab an invite to the guild. It's worth leveling a couple of toons as you soon run out of double xp. The extra xp and rep you would get from being in a guild will also help

Yep I took TeaLeaf's advice and joined the server you guys are on.

I got a random drop of a one handed weapon which did the same amount of damage as the two handed one I had. I spent a fortune on a shield to use with it. Its helped a lot as I have 200 extra amour from having the shield. I can take a lot more hits now. I really do need some better gear though.

One thing I am really confused about is the skill tree in WoW. At the moment I am just learning everything when I can as i need all the help I can get at a low level. Is there a way to re-assign points later? If not i am screwed!

I might be on in a bit. If you can add me to the guild that would be great!

Thanks for your advice.

Best thing to lvl with as a paladin is the Retribution tree, because Holy is for healing and Protection is for tanking, retribution is the dps tree and therefor most usefull to lvl with, I think:P

Read this:
http://retributionpaladins.com/retribution-paladin-talents/

and this for the talent tree build:
http://www.wowhead.com/talent#sbhMZMZsbGsdkszfk

the retribution points first, those in Holy and Protection will come later.

I have upgraded but it can take up to 72 hours to take effect. =(

In the meantime I will try to get to lvl 20 today if I can.

I need to find someone to teach me to mine and I will stick with blacksmithing. Hopefully then I can repair my own items and make myself new good stuff.

Mining isnt hard, just find a Mine and "use" it. You can set youre minimap to find Mines(Nodes) by clicking on the Magnifying glass and click on the right icon.

Dont think you can repair youre own gear though but you can make some good gear for youreself!

When did we get a third profession?

Fixed. My warrior is so rediculously OP as a tank while levelling xD
