Title: HEROIC: Blackwing Descent: Atramedes - Defeated June 14th 2011
Post by: TeaLeaf on April 22, 2011, 09:18:58 AM
QuoteHello and welcome to the Blackwing Descent raid guide! My name is Aliena, and in this video I'll show you all you have to know about the heroic version of Atramedes. I'll assume you know how to defeat the normal encounter and will only go over what changes for the heroic mode. We defeated this fight with 1 tank, 6 healers and 18 DPS, but similar raid configurations may work just as well.

There are definitely different approaches that can be taken to heroic Atramedes. I'm going to show you the strategy my guild uses and that works well for us. The biggest difference in the heroic version is that you only get 7 gongs in the whole encounter. Why? Every time you click a gong during the ground phase, Nefarian will destroy another. Since you want to use a gong for each Searing Flame, that means you get at most 3 1/2 ground and 3 air phases to kill him.

Also, occasionally an add called Obnoxious Fiend will spawn and attach itself to a random raid member's back much like the Snobolds on the first encounter in Trial of the Crusader. These guys however, will not interrupt their host, but instead cast a 1.5 second long spell that will give the affected raid member 10 additional sound. The cast is called "Obnoxious" and can and should be interrupted. Fiends have approximately 240k health and always take priority, so make sure your DPS take them out as soon as possible.

To counter phase 1 without racking up much sound and avoiding people getting breath, we actually use a strategy similar to the normal version's. Our ranged are all grouped up in one spot and so are the melee. When Atramedes spawns discs, everyone moves from them together. We start on the left, then move a few steps right when discs come out, and left again when another set spawns.

The breath is always kited into the direction we're already in. If breath happens while we're on the right, the kiter will run further right while the rest of the raid moves back into the left position. If the breath happens while we're on the left, the kiter will move left while everyone else runs back into the position on the right.

That way, unless the kiter makes a crucial mistake, the breath will never hit anyone.

The air phase also has one difference. The Sonar Bombs that Atramedes throws at people come down MUCH faster than they do in normal mode. While it shouldn't pose a huge problem, you should organize your raid so everyone has their own little designated spot that they can move back and forth in. What you absolutely want to avoid is people cutting into each other's paths and running into someone else's Sonar Bomb. They add 36 sound when touched, so that can easily be a death on top of some unavoidable Modulations.

If you have high latency, you might want to keep moving continuously during the air phase. If you don't, you can just start moving right before a Bomb comes down and then stop for a second.

The air phase flame breath will also move very fast, so you want to try and apply a speed buff to a kiter such as Body and Soul. If it'a a rogue, druid or someone else with a class speed buff that gets targeted by the breath, you're all set already. We kite the breath down to where Atramedes spawns, then have a rogue hit a gong and have him kite it along the outside of the room for the rest of the phase so the fire isn't completely obstructive.

That about sums up the differences in the heroic Atramedes encounter. I've attached footage of the whole encounter so you can see how we dealt with the various mechanics in detail.

Notes:

QuoteIn Heroic Mode, the fight remains largely unchanged in its execution. The only important difference is that twice per Ground Phase (sometimes only once, sometimes 3 times), an Obnoxious Fiend appears, runs towards a raid member (during which time, the Fiend is immune to attacks, snares and roots), and fixates itself on that raid member, repeatedly casting Obnoxious, which adds 10 sound to that player, and meleeing that player for about 10k. The Fiend has 155k health in 10-man difficulty and needs to be killed fast. Obnoxious casts can and should be interrupted so as to prevent the targeted player from increasing their sound level.

The enrage timer is tighter in Heroic Mode because Nefarian will destroy an additional Ancient Dwarven Shield every time you use one during the Ground Phase. This will basically leave you with 4 Ground Phases and 3 Air Phases to down the boss.

In addition, Atramedes has a little bit more health and all his abilities (except Roaring Flame Breath) deal more damage, add more sound and scale (in both sound and damage given) with the amount of sound a player already has. The timing of the abilities remains the same

Good guide to the changes needed for heroic mode.  This fight is up after Chimaeron.

I recommend getting your own supply of Swiftness Potion (http://www.wowhead.com/item=2459) if you do not have a personal speed buff.

With Heroic: Chimaeron down, this fight is the new challenge.  Let's research and progress!

We had our first solid hour on Atramedes last night and went from 85% on first try to a 1% wipe (500k HP) wipe in that time.  This guy goes down next reset for sure.  For those not in the instance, the key to this fight is not taking damage.  This is what we did:

(http://bossblueprint.com/php/get.php?img=J0sZSvFnI) (http://bossblueprint.com/view.php?img=J0sZSvFnI)

Ground Phase
Orange = Position 1 for the start of each ground phase
Blue = Position 2
MT is Green

Healer/Melee/Ranged split into two groups, group 1 left, group 2 right
Whichever group has MT also contains MT healer and the 3rd healer who is on Gongs during ground phase (in this it was left group)
Other group then has Air phase gong clicker (we used hunter)
We had 1 melee in each group (2 total)
Groups are close enough to boss that melee are in range when grouped and hunters just over min range at back.

Boss is pulled in a straight line towards door and tanked facing entrance.   MT can strafe right or left to avoid discs and then return to a central tanking position.

Groups move minimum possible amount, moving from P1 (Orange) to P2(Blue) for first discs.  Then at second discs moving back from P2 to P1 and then continuing to alternate like that for the rest of the ground phase.
**prio was nobody move early or late for discs - you ALL move the moment they spawn.  Early movement spreads discs and causes issues, late movement causes tracking issues, so we moved together as a group immediately the discs spawned.

Melee focus on interrupts as soon as add spawns (easy range)
All dps prio on adds when they spawn

Tracking target simply runs from one side to the other (eg left to right) when focused

Air Phase
**interrupt & kill the adds that still spawn!!!
As boss starts to fly up we move from P1/P2 position towards your side of the entrance (left group heads SW, right group heads SE) and then start to turn and be running more North by the time Tracking starts.

Tracking target uses personal Swiftness pot, speed boost talents etc and aims to kite to where Atramedes spawns at far end of room
Druid speed boost, leap of faith are used in extremis
When kite is at far end of room the first air phase gong is used
Tracking then heads to gong basher (hunter) who is at gong closest to door (to maximise kite path) and he then disengages away from tracking and kites towards the spawn point again
If done correctly tracking has to travel up and down the room 3 times and stops just before anyone gets killed!

Then return to ground phase, rinse & repeat.

Our best try had 500k HP and one gong left, so dps is fine, we just need to go do it again and finish the job.  Real nice pick up though on this new fight, to get to a 500k wipe in our first hour of tries is superb, well done all!

Well, he dropped tonight, thank goodness.  This fight proved very clearly to us that mistakes are very costly in heroic raiding.  When we avoided errors the tries went well, when we made mistakes we ended up wiping.  At least we got the bugger down and can now move on to new challenges.

Blowing Heroism when everyone is alive, 2nd airphase is done and there are few sources for incoming damage is a smart thing to do.
This means... that when 3rd airphase is done; We can actually take him down with one gong left (before Searing Flames).

Awsome job yesterday yall. And good learning curves. Hard modes are supposed to be hard. :-)

This ^^.
If we bowl over a new boss in 1 or 2 nights then it isn't hard and feels like an empty achievement.
I got more satisfaction from this kill than HC chim even though I wasn't in my regular role.

As a side note, as Tank it's next to impossible to Raise Ally someone as it normally requires me to move or use some cooldowns to generate runic power which causes a raid wipe. But as DPS I'm much more mobile and was able to get Noreia up fast to ensure our kill :) Kind of felt odd haing it on cooldown quite a bit last night!

Aye but if you're in the area of someone without a buff, then hitting them cannot hurt!
