Title: Smartphone comparison/ review sites
Post by: albert on April 30, 2011, 09:08:22 AM
Hi All,

I've been researching Android Smartphones so I can help my wife upgrade her phone and embarassingly, I forgot to check Deadmen Walking .
Does anyone have any recommendations for impartial review sites to look at to get a spec comparisons of the latest phones and some ratings?

It's things like the power consumption, RAM type, screen type, cpu, storage etc. . that I'm interested in. I also notice that Android 2.3 hasn't been particularly well received as many new phones are sticking with 2.2, why's that?

I also notice the HTC Desire HD is amazingly popular not only on the forums here but generally. Wifey found it a little big for her liking (no smart comments!!) so we've been looking at Samsung and LG phones, but HTC's other phones are confusing me, they have so many options, what's good and what's to avoid? The Galaxy Ace is on a deal everywhere right now and the Galaxy S II is almost out as well as the LG Optimus X2 P990 looks the business.

How would you recommend I make a fair comparison between what all seem to be similarly good phones? One that's not US centric as all the decent sites I've found are reviewing the US equivilents which is even more confusing!

But this US one is ok: http://www.pcworld.com/article/213732/smartphone_specs_demystified.html

If she finds the Desire HD a little big the HTC Incredible S is certainly worth looking into. It's a very similar phone specification wise but fits easily into your hand/pocket. I can't recommend HTC enough, this is my 3rd one. Every time I consider changing away they release another truly stunning phone. There are several out right now, the Desire S and the Incredible S both are smaller than the HD so fare a little better in battery life without losing too much in terms of performance. I tend to just google specs or comparrisons of phones like this one: Link (http://bigphonefight.com/htc-incredible-s-vs-htc-desire-s-%E2%80%93-review)

HTC have said android 2.4 will come to both of these phones. Hopefully this helps.

Android 2.3 is a definite improvement over 2.2. It may not have been well implemented by some manufacturers but in stock form it's fine. I wouldn't reject it out if hand.

Took your advice Smilo, T-Bag too, HTC Desire S Droid 2.3 looked ace.

O2 contract £21.50 for 100mins, 500 texts, 500MB, 20 free MMS, Unlimited wifi where O2 have a deal and unlimited tethering. 24 months. Phone £99. Will get a 16GB SD for £16 from Amazon.

Top deal I think.

Should I root the wife's new phone? Since in a twisted sort of way, I don't have and never have had any Android gadgets so this is my stealth Droid acquisition :-)

Edit: Phone came with an 8GB Micro SD, so no need for the 16GB quyite yet :D

I haven't rooted my Incredible S yet. The phone is pretty good as is. I think I'm mostly putting it off because my Hero was directly from T-Mobile (so had all their crap on it) which made it very hard to root, I tried it several times. I will do at some point for sure.  I think I'll probably do it the minute I buy an android tablet to tether it (I don't like the idea of another contract to get 3G running when I'm already paying for data with my phone and that's always with me).

I suppose I should get round to it sooner to improve battery life, speed etc (I like the idea of underclocking the processor when the phone is in sleep mode) but the phone is pretty speedy and the battery lasts a couple of days of MP3 Playing for my walk into uni, Playing Angry Birds and phone calls (that's pretty much what a smart phone should be used for) so I'm dragging my feet out of lazyness.

Since I've got it some dual core phones have hit the market which I'm sure are better in some ways. Personally I love what HTC have done with the Hardware and Software of Android, and haven't been a fan of the Samsung tweaks to Android (based on my time using a Galaxy S - though I did like their quick settings which got rolled into my version of android).

The incredible goes 2-3 days on a charge of normal use for me (I'm generally within WiFi range and I'm sure this makes a difference), for heavy use and I have to put it on charge or when I wake up the next morning it will be begging for a charge. (To give you an idea of typical use, I frequently go on facebook and browse the web when away from my computer, I use it as an MP3 play 30mins a day minimum for my walk into uni and back, I play angry birds more than I should, I control my computer via wifi using VLC remote and it's also my sat-nav - it doesn't just sit on standby basically. Though when it does the battery doesn't seem to me to last miles longer).

So my experience is it's a good phone that can run everything I use, but I have suffered a little slow down when I have certain app combos running (the biggest trouble makers are apps with a network discovery feature when they fail to find a server...I've had to force kill a couple to get angry birds to run smoothly again).

That's my mini-review. Google will show you to professional one.

If your budget allows the HTC Sensation might be a better phone (bigger screen, dual core) at the extra cost of; money, battery life and weight. I've not had a play so can't say.
