right i am now on the lookout for a new mobo, as seen by those at the lan it is definatly needed.
i have found one that i think looks promising

the matsonic 8157e Socket A (AMD) Motherboard
i like it because it supports sd and ddr ram so is better for me as i can only up grade slowly, also supports a wide range of processors from 600mhz up to xp2600+, only problem being that it only supports fsb of up to 266, is this a problem.
also i like it because it looks like it would be nice and tidy cable wise.
How about something like this instead?
Abit NF7 - nForce2 - USB2+A133+Dual DDR400+AGP8x - £59.
Now I know it does not support SDRAM, but it is worth the wait and about the same price as the one you looked at above.
When the bank balance allows, purchase the mobo and add £31 for 256Mb PC3200 (PC400) DDR Memory (Major brand).
You can add a £40 Athlon XP when the next £40 is available and at that point you can overclock the sucker to a 200MHz FSB and change your £40 CPU into a £300 performance monster.
You can add the extra 256MB to take it to 512BM when you're ready.
The trouble is that is you go down the route you are looking in your post then you are restricting what you can do just a little way down the line. For example, PC2100 is the same price as PC3200 for a 256MB stick, so in 6 months time you can guarantee it will be more expensive! If you delay your purchase just a wee while to make the extra £31 available (about 2 hours of *not* being in the pub should do it ;)) then you have something that will last you a heck of a sight longer and go a heck of a sight faster.
Just a thought....

I use the sites on G's post along with ebuyer.co.uk and cpucity.co.uk. That covers just about all the places I check.......

Both me and SlowHand got this one. Works fine for me at least. All the extra goodies onboard as LANx2, 5.1 sound, SATA, USB2.0, Firewire etc
Works very well.
that was one of my fav's on the spec/price as well. the only down side to it is that it's not a nice colour to see through my window.

Of the choice listed, I'd go for the nForce2 in the Asus rather than the KT600 in the Epox.

Works very well. Sadako - correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you and SLoWHaND have the A7N8X- Deluxe? I thought I'd seen a post from you chaps a while back saying that this was the board type you'd bought. The A7N8X- X differs from the Deluxe in that: it only has one LAN port, no SATA support, no soundstorm APU (so no Dolby Digital 5.1 audio or SPDIF digitial in/out - just a RealTek 6 channel analogue codec), single (not dual-channel) memory controller, and no Firewire support. It's a good board for the money right enough, and one Sheepy should seriously consider, but doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the board you described.
well none of that other stuff would be any use to me.
except maybe firewire as the only thing i can see of any use in the future.
sheepy, do you still want a HDD. I have a 30GB one here I can send you.
well yup, as i dont think that im going to be able to do all my upgrade at once, so a hard drive would be very usefull m8, as i need to send smites dad's back to him!
ok, pm me your address and I'll send it today. It'll need formatting once you have it plugged in.
