Title: BattleField 3 Vs Modern Warfare 3 - the November showdown. What does dMw think?

In an interview with BF3Blog (http://bf3blog.com/2011/06/ea-battlefield-3-will-outsell-modern-warfare-3) according to EA’s senior vice president Jens Uwe, Battlefield 3 will outsell Modern Warfare 3. When asked if Battlefield 3 will outsell Modern Warfare 3, he said:

QuoteCertainly. The only question is when that day will be. And for me, the sooner the better. With Battlefield 3 we have a superior games engine and a top notch product. We are convinced that we will, in fact, have a better product than our key competitor in the space. We think this is the perfect year to gain back market share.

My thought are:
EA would say this. Doesn’t make it true.

However, MW3 will have a truly massive marketing campaign and while PC players have lost interest in dumbed-down rinse-n-repeat shooters, the console community are happy with “more of the same” because it is a winning formula, and as they say “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”.

The key difference here is PC players want better games while console players just want more. And more isn’t neccessarily better.

We’ll find out for sure in November, however one prediction I can make with certainty is that by November 2012 there will be more people still playing BF3 than even remember MW3. After all, there are hundreds of BF2 servers still going (I played on some last week) but how many console gamers are still excited about "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" for the PS2 (top console game of 2004)?

MW/COD and Battlefield are distinctly different games, you cant say that one is better than the other.

Everyone seems to be getting very excited about BF3's multiplayer depsite the fact that they haven't released any videos of it yet. Until that happens, I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

They are not that different. There were plenty of maps in BF2 that relied upon the close combat gameplay. I'm sure BF3 will have PLENTY of maps that can get cut back into a CoD style map without vehicles. I also imagine that they will have a variety of game types to directly compete with CoD as well as the larger scale maps.

As for the fact they haven't released any multiplayer videos yet, correct, but they have talked about the maps available, the features and several other things and shown off the engine that will be used. Whereas CoD hasn't shown any proper game play as far as I'm aware, they've released a teaser trailer which showed nothing. And more imporantly, minimal updates to the engine. They've also announced NO DEDICATED servers. Effectively killing online PC gaming (I own MW2 and it is so frustrating finding a good game on that I've only had the courage to go on maybe 7-8 times).
With those details people can start to make up their own minds. I've been disappointed before with "CoD Killers", but this one shows promise and if of good pedigree.

They don't need to be cod killers. CoD seems to be killing itself for the pc market

I'm actually more excited about MW3, I just love cod, over any other warfare/shooter (though there are better non warfare games ofc).   However, I wasn't aware of an elite "subscription" I have 2 words for that, and they aren't pretty enough to say out lout, so I won't type them out, lets just say they can stick the subscription somewhere very dark ;)

That "Kodopoop" might work on xbox players but I doubt many pc gamers will get the subscription.
If they want to make it so that you will have to pay for multiplaying entirely (If they start with dl-content subscription, then that isn't to far off perhaps a thought for MW4?) then that would mean the end of COD i'm afraid. Or any other actvision game for that matter.

Honestly what is going on in their minds? Can they only see the bilions of dollars Blizzard is making? Well tough luck, you don't have a decent MMORPG don't try it on shooters...

I'll just wait with pre-ordering anything, if 80% of you guys are going to play BF3 then maybe I shall reconsider, I only started playing COD because most of you old CS:S folks were doing it in the first place.

Edit:  I missed T-bags post containing "They've also announced NO DEDICATED servers. Effectively killing online PC gaming"  If thats so then then I'll probably only play the single player in a internet café and not bother buying the game AT ALL!

I'm always very twitchy about any game that asks for money for anything other than access to servers or novelty vanity items. I'm also uncomfortable about games that rely too much on rewarding players through levelling, when that game isn't an MMO. The idea of jumping on a server with a basic gun and facing players who have bionic suits and heat seeking missiles coming out of their eyes tends to put me off joining the server in the first place. I much prefer to be shot dead in the first ten seconds by players who are either better than me or more familiar with the maps and tactics. Being killed by someone for no other reason than they have masses of uber gear or new skills is a real turn off. And if they get that gear by digging out their credit card or due to them having ranked up after hours of endless play then it's a game I'm not going to be that keen on. And I imagine it will be a turn off for many others as well.

I can sort of see how levelling ranks through play time might be fun but it needs to be done in a way that gives a player more ways to do something rather than just tricking them out so they become a killing machine. For example after a certain number of hours a player might be able to fly a chopper. Everyone can get in a chopper but only players with a certain rank can fly it. An encouragement to play more but not a benefit that makes a player into a killing machine. However a  skill that turns them invisible and gives heat seeking bullets that shoot round corners is not cool.

I get the impression that Activision would just love to bring in any system that makes them money and compels people to keep paying for a game just to stay competitive. They look at the income from a game like WOW and drool. On the surface 'Elite' seems to just add some out of game extras that we can easily live without, but how long it will be before that 2000m sniper rifle can only be gained through a micro payment is worrying.

EA on the other hand don't seem to be exploring the additional payment to play model quite so aggressively. Plus I'm a complete convert to co-op play shooters that play over a couple of hours rather than versus games that run for ten minutes, but that's just me and my personal preference.
