Tox is too modest to blow his own trumpet, but I'm not...
The following is an article from our local rag (http://www.thisissomerset.co.uk/sport/Young-Morgan-continues-black-belt-progress/article-3617360-detail/article.html)
Young Morgan continues black belt progress
Mendip Shotokan Karate Club's Jack Morgan has become one of the country's youngest 3rd Degree black belts at the age of 21.
Morgan attended a four-day international course and grading in Guildford, supervised by visiting instructors from the Japan Karate Association's headquarters in Tokyo and Europe.
The minimum age to attempt the grade is 21 but few have achieved it.
Mendip chief instructor sensei Gary Scammell 4th Dan JKA said: "This is a fantastic accomplishment, not only for Jack and his club, but also for Somerset.
"I remember Jack joining Mendip Karate when he was just six years old along with his mother Julie, brother Laurie, and later his sister Martha.
"Jack soon showed great promise and at the age of ten gained his black belt under the late world renowned Japanese examiner, Master K Enoeda 9th Dan.
"He went on to pass his 2nd Dan in 2004 aged just 15, while also winning many club titles and accolades. We are very proud of his continued commitment."
After winning a bronze medal for kumite (free fighting) at his first National Championships, Morgan trained regularly with the England squad in London. He won several national medals and helped England to victory in France in 2007.
Next year, JKA Mendip Karate Club will be inviting students past and present to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
Meanwhile, there will be a new beginner's class starting soon and a new class timetable. For more information, contact Gary on 01761 233343, Richard on 01373 463798, Julie on 01761 233268 or visit www.mendipshotokan.co.uk (http://www.mendipshotokan.co.uk/).

Well, it depends on the individual really.
If you train hard, take (and pass) every grading at the earliest opportunity, you can get a 1st degree black belt in just over 3 years. Second degree black belt can be taken 2 years after that (I took 5 years) and 3rd degree black belt after another 3 years with a minimum age of 21 (I took 6 years between). So the very very earliest you could get a 3rd dan is after 8 years (which is pretty much unheard of). I took 16 years.
