Hello everyone. I'm from London in my late 30s and only just starting pc gaming. Yep a bit late to the party. I've always been a console gamer. Owned both xboxes. But with my latest xbox packing in I've had enough of console gaming and gone the pc route.
Just installed steam and got the complete valve pack, bc2, and got nfs hot pursuit. I'm open to recommendations as I know very little when it comes to pc gaming.
Heya Gunnzie, welcome to the forums :D
Alot of us play bc2 we have our own uk server 32 man.... theres guys who race on here aswell have a butchers on the forums its all pretty much explained will be looking forward to kicking your but on the battlefield (oh and welcome :P )
Welcome, try everything, personally I'd recommend Arma2 OA, not consoley at all :)
Greetings, as mentioned you'll get most mileage out of Bad Company 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops and ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead. As these are the three shooters we play the most. Racing games are covered by (Need for Speed) and we also play a bit of the free game World of Tanks.

Hi Gunnzie, welcome to dMw.
pull up a chair, you'll never leave:D
I'm abit CoD biased, but if you hang on to your cash till BF3, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Meanwhile... There's always Black Ops, Arma OA or any of the other games we play.
If you need a pointer to a server (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?3363-Server-Password), just shout

Greetings and welcome Gunnzie.
Please excuse the above misinformation, the sim of choice @ dMw is
LIVE for Speed. Free demo can be found at http://www.lfs.net/
NFS is sometimes played at the LAN by the younger and rowdier elements
Ten years and I still can't get that right........ sigh.

Welcome mate, hope you find something that you can can suit you gaming needs :) Just shout if you have questions :) And I like Benny and Blunt would recommend Arma 2 OA :)
Does Live For Speed need a steering wheel though? That would be a bit too much for me to be honest. I have a 360 controller though as I kept my spare wired one from my old 360.
I tried the free Arma 2 game very briefly and it seemed just my cup of tea. I'm not a big fan of cod as its a bit too arcadey and fast paced for my ageing brain to handle. I'll look into Arma 2 OA.
Anyway thanks everyone for the warm welcome.
Welcome to the forums =).
I used to play a lot on consoles but I am now mainly PC based so same position as you. There are a great bunch of guys here and a wide array of game are played on different nights of the week.
From WoW RPG's to SIMS like ARMA and LFS its all covered here.
Shame the LAN is full as that's a great way to sample the atmosphere in the community.
Welcome again.
DZ.

We know a few drivers who use a 360 controller and others who use a mouse, but a wheel usually takes a chunk off your lap times,:racing:
Thanks. I see there is a demo of LFS so will definitely give that a go. I'd never get a wheel setup approved by SWMBO so 360 controller will have to do ;)
Welcome Gunnzie.
Now that your registered, make sure you download TeamSpeak. The details are on the forums but this will allow you to join in on the banter on our servers. All of the server details can be found here: http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?3363-Server-Password The BC2 server name is dMw. | UK | Mixed Rotat'n | MSG and can be found in-game in the server browser by typing in dmw. and searching.
There's plenty of folks here that will give you guidance and advice to get up to speed quickly in the games we're currently supporting.
Hope to see you in-game soon!
Hello and welcome! :)
If anyone else has any racing game recommendations then please do let me know. Live For Speed isn't for me. I'm not into having to mess around with config files, and numerous menus and settings just to get a gamepad configured. Iguess that comes down to my console background but I'm not interested in having to do all that kind of stuff. Can anyone recommend racers which work with the 360 pad out of the box?
Thing is I get in from work and just want a quick half an hour on something. That means plug and play for me. No config settings, menus, etc. I apologise if I'm just being unrealistic but this my first foray into PC gaming. Shame Games For Windows never took off. Games that had to support the 360 controller is perfect. Shame for me anyway ;)
I used to play LFS out the box, had no idea what they were all on about and played it with a pad.....horses for courses, give it a go :)

Any of the codemasters games work out the box with wheels and 360 controllers. They're the Dirt Series, Grid, F1 2010 etc (look up codemasters on Steam). Not sure anyone plays them here though, but I enjoy them single player anyway.
Also anything games for windows live (although I'm not a fan of it in general) will have 360 pad support. In fact most of the main PC games have that option. Though I'd steer clear of it in a FPS as keyboard and mouse are faster and more accurate once you're used to them.
Keyboard (wireless) isn't working out too well at present. I only play on my 40 inch tv sitting on the sofa. Pc is permanently sat in living room connected to tv. Tried playing Arma 2 Free but gave up tbh. So tried with gamepad but that didn't feel right either. I don't think me and fps are going to work out on pc. I might stick to other genres. No problem though. I'll just find the genres that do suit me.
I've found my racing game!
I downloaded the GTR Evolution from Steam. Works with the 360 controller out of the box, controls brilliantly with no tinkering needed. I can max out the gfx even on my PC which just looks great. And the game is excellent. Even better than Forza on 360 although it might be a bit "drab" compared to Forza. By that I mean there is no menu music and just lacks something in presentation. Still it's the racing that counts.

Check out Dirt 2 if you're after something a little more exciting. It's got music and great graphics. Plus because the sequel is out (which is also a great game) it's only £10. Full 360 controller support. Even runs fine on my 46" TV without any issues (some games don't maximise properly). Plus side by side comparison with the PS3 version is no contest, PC wins hands down with higher resolution and DX11 support.
Slowly but surely I'm getting the hang of this PC gaming malarky. I finally got BFBC2 downloaded off Steam (it took forever) and I have to say it is far superior experience to the console version of this game. Even on my poor Athlon 7750 with Radeon 6790, I can play it on 1920x1080 (after I figured out the menu fix). I'm still struggling a bit with all the keyboard keys which is tough. I can't reach the lef ctrl key to crouch for example. I think I need a mouse with a few extra assignable buttons on it. The only place (at the moment) I feel the console version wins is on comms. I haven't heard a soul yet. Which brings me on to the next point? Am I able to get an invite to the dMw Steam group? Or is there a procedure to follow on this kind of thing? My Steam ID is GunnzieUK.
Accept my friend invite and I'll add you to the group
and get on our Team Speak server if you want to hear some proper comms.
Will do.
What is the policy on using the dMw clan tag? I know a lot of PC clans have an approval process before allowing people to use their tag so thought I had better ask. If there is such a proces then that is absolutely fine - just making sure I tow the line ;)

-=[dMw[=- tags are awarded by the game leader to regular players who play in the correct spirit, use teamplay, comms and fair play.
I'm sure you'll get a tag pretty quickly if you join in :)
here's a quick summary (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?26782-General-Gaming-Standards)
BC2 is by far the hardest FSP ive played ( Having played Medal of honour allied assualt series, Battlefield 1942, bf2,bf2142,wolfinstien,cod series, halo etc etc!)
But then again i would recommend trying Arma 2 (Can be bought cheap from our amazon page - it is proberly the most realistic warfare game out there)
Well, I finally gave in. To be honest in the last 2 weeks I have had no end of problems and quite genuinely have spent more time messing around trying to get games working than actually playing them. After having problems even installing NFS:HP, I left my friend who is staying the weekend and made the decision to get to the shops just before closing time and pick up a PS3. I've always been a XBox player but having seen what even my feeble PC is capable of really makes the 360 look dated. The PS3 is too a bit I guess but nowhere near as bad. I hate that PS3 controller but you can't have it all.
That's not to say I've given up totally on the PC. I'll still pick up a few that aren't available on PS3 (plus what I've already bought) and a few FPS too as keyboard and mouse still feels better than a controller for FPS. But the frustration is too much for me and I'm getting too old to be messing around with PCs and configurations and the numerous problems. I need the easy life at my age ;)
Still can't get NFS:HP to install but I'm going to bin it and get it on PS3 instead. Too many headaches.
The irony is I got home to find my friend playing BC2 and couldn't get him off. Now he wants to try CS:S. Haven't even setup the PS3 yet.
well teamspeak msn or wotever is there to help if u ever come to pc i can always type you though the problems u have etc
Gunzie, join Teamspeak and ask for some help mate. I actually cannot remember the last time a game I bought for PC did not install and run properly, so there has to be something real simple that is not working. Jump on TS and ask in channel for the help.
The point is really that in all the years of owning a XBox, I never once had to ask anyone for help getting a game working. That's how I want it and that's what PC gaming has proven to be unable to offer me. Just switch on and play. Sure I can spend time on Teamspeak or MSN trying to sort out the numerous problems but I don't want to. I get very little time for this as it is. So really it has to be back to console for me. I'll still make the most of what I have already bought on PC but I cannot see myself buying anything more for it. Very little anyway. I am not a graphics whore anyway (hence being happy with my Athlon 7750 and Radeon 6790 which must be light years behind some of the PC rigs out there) so console gaming from the point is not a big deal for me.
Now that Test Drive Unlimited 2 is causing me issues on PC, it's the final straw. All I did was change resolution and I now have black borders all round the screen. Even when I switch it back to the old setting. It's just too much hassle.
That seems to be the thing that puts people off most. A console crashes, you reboot it or take it back to the shops, a PC crashes it's likely to do the same thing again if you don't find the problem. I can't remember the last time I had a problem that wasn't solvable by putting the latest graphics drivers on (or verifying the steam game cash), but it's not as straight forward as a console.
It's going to be a little while till a sensible Xbox or the PS4 come out (they're working on it, but late 2012 looks like the earliest), until then people wanting good graphics will have to put up with these quirks of the PC, even the Wii U (although trouncing the PS3 and 360) will be on a graphics card worse than the one in your PC.
It's just frustrating. I had hoped it would be easier as I need a reasonably beefy pc for my work anyway. So I thought just bunging in a half decent gfx card would be an ideal solution.
As T-Bag says it's a trade off between speed and utility (you can do much more with a PC than play games, try accessing this forum on an Xbox :) ) against simplicity and games just working on the consoles.
From what you say I think you might have an issue with your PC rather than just be experiencing normal PC - gaming issues. I've not had an issue with a game for ages. But then over the weekend my PC started locking up hard every few hours. It was just after I upgraded to the lastest Nvidia drivers. A quick uninstall and installation of the official Windows drivers via Windows update and all is well.
So Windows game problems do happen but are very rare from my experience. It would be a shame if you missed out on dMw gaming goodness for the sake of a dodgy driver or bit of badly coded software that was messing with your system.
Well I solved one mystery this evening. I've also started getting my Windows 7 locking up and stopping responding. A few times it will recover with an error stating that the display driver had stopped responding and has recovered. Other times it would just hang and require a hard reset. I've tried everything (without mentioning it on here because I was starting to sound like a broken record lol). Changing display drivers. I even considered reinstalling the OS. That was a last resort so before I did that I tried to really think when it started and what I had done to my PC. It occurred to me that it always happened when I was browsing the internet and then it hit me. I had recently installed Firefox 5 on my PC around the same time it started. Yes, Firefox 5 was causing my display driver to crash. I thought that was ridiculous so I Googled it and lo and behold there are many other people complaining of the same.
Uninstalled Firefox and everything seems fine again. So that's one down..........
I'm determined to get Battlefield 3 on PC just because I think BC2 is better on PC.
Also, sorry for joining Teamspeak tonight when I don't own a headset yet. I was just testing it out.
glad it was nothing mayjor, jump on ts when ur playing bc2 and u can always listen to the banter
It's time to pack my bags, wave goodbye and wish you all the best.
Another problem with BC2 and I've decide to concede defeat to PC gaming and give it up. Dealing with technical issues just isn't my thing and there are just too many of them. I've reached a point where I feel embarrassed to keep asking for help all the time and sounding like a broken record on here. I don't want to sound like a moaning old git all the time but I just seem to have had one issue after another. It just wasn't meant to be.
I'll disappear with this final thought. For anyone else interested in PC gaming I'd recommend dMw without question.
Thanks for making me welcome and trying to help my make a go of gaming on PC but it just wasn't to be unfortunately.
:byebye:
we have all here had a pc issue at one stage or another i had at least 100 posts referance my cyberpower uk purchase that didnt go well, you dont need to leave pal, bear with it and we as a community we help you in any way we can to get it sorted, also look at my arma 2 oa issues thread as well, people are willing to give there time to help, so soldier dont quit on us yet we have the technology...heard that last bit somewhere
forgot to add, get on teamspeak if you can and the issues will go a lot quicker as people can work with you real time
I'd recommend starting from scratch Gunzie. PCs just don't have the issues you are seeing when you install a game without having a pre-existing problem. Perhaps a total wipe, reinstall of the OS & patch it fully, update the drivers fully, then try installing the game.
It's worth the effort as you just can't get the same feeling of community & friendship on a console. Install it on a clean PC and you won't have any problems.
I Would still try and get in contact with EA Games customer support they are pretty usefull IMO & As Sulky says we are here to help
Gunzie Make a post on here and tell us what problems your having, we will try and solve them for you.
There's no need to throw in the towel just yet mate.
Post up the exact problems you've been getting in the 'Technology Section' and we'll try and get it sorted for you.
I thought it would be quite rude to start posting on here again after so long without a quick hello again.
After finally accepting that my finances are unlikely to allow me to get a next gen console and being fed up of below HD graphics, I have ordered a new gfx card (funded by selling current gen consoles) and getting back into PC stuff. I got a bit fed up of the constant tinkering with settings etc last time but my philosophy this time is if a game doesn't work nicely on my machine then move onto a game that does. No messing, no stressing.
So hello again.
Welcome back mate, I am in the process of ditching my current consoles and I wont be going next gen as they are both a joke IMHO :) So hope to see you on the servers.
Welcome back Gunnzie.
Try CS:GO for trouble free gaming:D
Welcome back Gunnzie :)
Give us a shout if you run into any problems, and we'll get you sorted.
Welcome back!
