Title: CPU - motherboard combo ??
Post by: smilodon on July 23, 2011, 12:47:52 AM
I'm replacing the motherboard in a recently deceased PC. The old motherboard was pretty ancient (Socket 939) and so I'll obviously need to upgrade. This will mean a new CPU and RAM.

This is NOT a gaming PC and will only run desktop apps. Almost all use will be through a web browser (it's my email, browsing, documents PC) The most work it might be asked to do would be play a few You Tube videos. It will run Ubuntu Linux but I don't see that as an issue. I've got a 500gb SATA hard drive and a Zotac 210 PCI-E graphics card and am looking for a recommendation for a 'budget' mobo and CPU. Amazon seems awash with vast numbers of products and as I've not kept up with hardware developments at all I have no idea what's a bargain and what's not. Sandy bridge I3, Celeron Dual core, Phemon this, Semperon that.......

A little pointer at a decent but cheap combo would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Thanks, looks interesting. However I already have a reasonably decent graphics card and it would be a shame to not use it. Can you use a graphics card with an apu set up?

well if it had been a ATI card you would have been able to run CrossfireX between the APU and the gpu.. so might aswell look at intel also, whats your budget like

Couple of hundred pounds. but I'm not looking to spend a set amount. My plan is to spend as little as possible while getting a working desktop PC. So if I can get fixed up for less I'd do it. I just see so many different types of CPU and now these APU's it's hard to know where the bargains are.

Yep mobo, CPU and motherboard as all the existing stuff is way out of date. It was a Asus A8 -SLI mobo (dead) Athlon 64 Fx-55 2.6 Ghz (obsolete) 2 gig PC2700 RAM (obsoluete) 500Gb SATA HDD, DVD-RW x16, 650 watt PSU. Like I said I'm just looking to get a motherboard, CPU and RAM good enough to be able to use it as a day to day desktop (no games or heavy duty work).

I'm currently thinking about getting an Intel E5500 Dual Core Processor - 2.80GHz ro similar an a Gigabyte G41MT Motherboard with a couple of gig of DDR3 RAM. But I don't know exactly what cpu to go for or if I would be better of going with an AMD Althlon II x4?
