I'll admit, I didn't see this one coming....

Ahh but what kind of dedicated, what we want or what they understand to be.
I imagine that it will be something very similar to the CODBLOPS/BC2 situation. Dedicated servers, but only available from certain providers.
Which would obviously mean no LAN servers, which would definitely suck :(
My computer related knowledge is limited, please fill me in. Would this, or would this not mean that deadmen can have its own server again?

Yes. We could have our own server. It would just have to be rented from an external company, not put on an existing server. This is good news. The more competitive MW3 gets the more BF3 will need to go to steam...in my mind at least. I'm not that interested in MW3 after the last few were so poor, but I did love MW1...which had dedicated servers.
wise choice to make em dedicated
And LAN support apparently Aritcle here (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-08-modern-warfare-3-pc-has-lan-support)
Well we didn't have to wait long did we!
Two cod games later and finally we get LAN support back.
Wonder whether it will be ranked the LAN support and whether it will need an internet connection.
Lets hope its not an add on feature that comes with the "elite" pack ( at extra cost obviously).
Tbh, I'd be happy even if we had to buy the server package, although I'd obviously prefer the server & client access to be free with the game itself. But if MW3 has proper LAN support (ie true dedicated server) then we'll be all over this game like a rash.
If I have understood this correctly, there will be dedicated servers but:
> To have a dedicated server will mean it will be unranked.
> For a Ranked server it will either work like MW2 (Matchmaking) or be on a GSP
This is also said to use VAC for anticheat.
De ja vu anyone?
Edit, found this:
Are Dedicated Servers Ranked or UnRanked?
Only matchmaking to public games are Ranked (meaning, you have to rank up to unlock weapons to rank on the leaderboards), choosing to play on a Dedicated Server is UnRanked. Meaning unlocks are completely controlled by the Server Admin. They can choose to unlock everything or limit class restrictions to whatever they like to fully customize the experience. You do not have to rank up in Public games to have access to weapons in Dedicated Servers, you have complete control over what is unlocked for you in a Unranked Dedicated Server
So, we are mildly happy??
So basically we could choose everything is unlocked. Everyone has all the weapons and everything and doesn't have to worry about levels or people having all the best weapons before everyone else? Sounds like it fits our style of playing.
Another plus being unranked we won't get the frag hunters because they'll be levelling up on the other servers...
It doesn't actually sound that bad at all. I would rather have both. The option to unlock everything while still gaining ranks I I could do it all on our server (if we get one), but this isn't all that bad...
Problem is getting people to join an unranked server, not many will (like RO2 for example), Although I know it states the weapons can be fully unlocked, I kinda find weapon upgrade progression part of the fun, all be it, it usually does not take long to rank up in COD games.
It's still a waiting game to see if they will release mod / map tools, if they do, I suspect it wont be as bad.
