Hey, i want to start using voice comms but am having trouble finding a decent mic. I would prefere to get one from a shop but if any of you have a url for a decent mic then that would be of great help.
Also whats the best way to avoid the mic interfering with my headphones or speakers, as most have an ear piece as well?

i think this might be going a little to far.

cheers i'll take a look
i just have a desk mic...£2.99 or less if u look round ....i dont know how good it is but people seem to understand me when i talk...well if im not pissed that is
Thats the one i got http://barrington-ind.com/cgi-bin/merchant...ry_Code=MBH!!!! (http://barrington-ind.com/cgi-bin/merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=H&Product_Code=H723&Category_Code=MBH!!!!)
I got the plantronics, love it really comfy, can wear it for hours and talk total bollox without becoming the slightest bit uncomfortable :-)
:? As an aside about microphones, how do I get the volume/gain turned up? I've run the audio wizard and stuff but I need to shout before ppl can hear me. It's a bit disconcerting for 'er indoors while shes sitting there playing Pinball or Diablo II and I shout out 'He's hiding behind the red box, cover me!'
Bring up your master volume control panel and select mic boost.
I think I've done that OB, but I'll double check tonight. I've also got the -20db setting ticked.
OK this is a bit basic but did you check the Voice Transmit Volume in CS options?
 You're right it is a bit basic and no I didn't check it  8O
I didn't even know there was a option! I'll check it tonight.
Thanks.
:?: Well I had a look at the config menu and could see no option for the Voice Transmit Volume. were you having me on?
I've tried two different headsets and both were very quiet. :?

Snooky..
I believe you'll find it in the submenu where you can change your player name and spray. It's either on the first screen or can be found by clicking on the right arrow key that is near the top right.
Good Luck :)
 Didn't check that far as I thought (mistakenly) that only name, skin, colours where the things you change there, doh! Sorry!
I'l check it again tonight and with any luck you'll be sick of my voice by 9pm :smokin:
Well OldBloke and BlueBall on your recommendation I've just ordered the Plantronics Stereo 90 from dabs.com http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-search.a...bd=asc&stab=ref (http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-search.asp?action=search&tid=788&mid=911&ob=manufacturer&obd=asc&stab=ref)
£27) I was looking at the Sennheiser ~@b40 equivelant but you swayed me. My setup at the moment is Sennheiser HD450 with a tu'penny-ha'penny mic. jury rigged upside my head! Not a pretty sight but it works.
just got arround to buying my set to! cant wait! love new toys
8O The 'use voice comms' thing is the toggle to switch the mike on and off, I've got that set. :?
Any other ideas on how to increase the volume :?:
In the volume control panel for the soundcard I have my mic volume set to about 75% with the +20db gain ticked.
Additionally, there is a "voice transmit volume" slider in one of the advanced config screens of CS. You can get to it by selecting "Play CS" then "Customise" from your CS main menu. Check that the "voice transmit volume" slider is up around 75 to 80% and that the voice receive volume slider is set to something similar but maybe slightly lower (You don't want to mute Tealeaf but you don't want him bellowing either  )
Your microphone should be about 2 inches from your mouth. Alternatively, make sure your mouth is 2 inches from the mic :-)
Have you tried running a local LAN game and connecting to it, then type "voice_loopback 1" in console and start speaking. There will be a short delay but you will hear your own voice pretty much exactly as others hear it. When you are happy with the volume type "voice_loopback 0" to stop the annoying echo :-)
Obviously all of this depends on how sensitive your microphone is. I use the plantronics and it seems pretty good but I know there are reasonable quality sets for half the price I paid for this (however I'm a snob). To test your microphone's sensitivity try being rude to it and calling it names. If it doesn't work properly for a couple of days then it is sensitive and you need to be careful.
I think I'd better go take my tablets now :P
HTH
can someone post a complete list of mic console commands so i/we can alter them ingame. I haven't got arround to installing my mic yet, but for warned for armed and all that.
cheers
Thanks for that info BB, I finally found the setting that Ninja_freak was on about and I've got my mic volume set to maximum and still no-one can hear me
I'll run a LAN game tonight and try the voice_loopback 1 option and mess about with mic position and stuff.
I might even go back to my old headset, which is a bit of a cheapy (thats cheapy not sheepy  ) one. The curent one is a Microsoft GameVoice, one of those with a hockey puck attached.
This may well be stating the obvious but in the 'Customise' page there are two boxes to select, 'Enable voice in this mod' and 'Use microphone for voice input' Just a thought.
Yup Doorman I've ticked both those boxes too. People can hear me but it is very quiet. If I blow on my mike I can hear it quite loudly in my headphones, but I can't really hear my speech. It's something to do with the sensitivity I think.
I've been calling it names but it doesnt make any difference.
If I use GameVoice it seems to be OK. :?
Arrrrrrggggggh! :x
FBG you wanted the console commands for voice stuff, Well here they are

Have you checked the command line that starts CS (and also the game setting in Gamespy if you use that)? I use:
C:SierraCounter-Strikecstrike.exe -console -noipx -nointro +voice_dsound 1
and the bit to check is the +voice_dsound 1 at the end.
I've got that set in Gamespy BB. And I've gone through the CVARS and none of them look like they'd help :(
Oh well, just have to shout then :o
What does it sound like in a local game with "voice_loopback 1" toggled? Does it sound ok there or is it quiet?

Sorry for the long post :-) HTH?
BB those look very similar to the defaults, which is what mine are. But I think I've solved the problem :D
I've unplugged the headphones from the 'hockey puck' thingy and plugged them straigt into the sound card and it seems alot louder now, I think. People seemed to be able to hear me last night, though I couldn't get any feedback on whether it was clear or not. Of to a beer festival tonight so I wont be able to test again until Saturday. :P Catch ya then.
hooorraaaa i got my headphones with mic today, like a 5 year with new toys :-D
Me to! :D
glad you're fixed.
Hi guys.
My turn for some help with the comms. I can't usually use voice becuase my pc's outside thid kids bedroom so shouting things like "he's behind you" can't be done. But with the tourney thing in the afternoon, I thought I'd give it a try.
I'm using an old desktop mike that came with my very first pc, it's old but unused. I've checked my config with blueballs above and made the changes needed and checked that it's enabled in the CS GUI's.
Still can't get it to work though. I'm not even getting the speaker icon showing against my name in the game (TAB key).
Any ideas?
i could help but i dont understand what your prob is... :?... it is fuzzy... is there no sound.....??

You will never see speaker icon against your name. None of us do, that is normal. If you start windows recorder or something like that can you record wave files from the mic? Try this:
Start CS, select play and pick LAN instead of internet. Select "create game" and pick a map. Join the game and bring down your console. Tyoe "voice_loopback 1" in console. Now press the key assigned to talk and try speaking. You should hear your own voice with a bit of a delay. If that is OK then type voice_loopback 0 in console and smile because you are working OK.
Things to watch for: If you have speakers instead of headphones watch out for feedback - we don't like it and the feedback you get will be worse (LOL).
HTH?
It just wasn't working, but I think I've found the prob. I had taken the advice of a previous post and made my config.cfg file read only, so the changes I made in the GUI didn't take.
I'll find out how well it works during the tourney.
