Title: The road I'm going down
Post by: Penfold on October 18, 2011, 09:22:33 AM
If indeed space does have roads......?

Anyway I do like playing the light, fast interceptor so think I'm going to stay on the Raider/War Raider line. I get bored easily so speed is something I'm not prepared to give up on.

My advanced raider is fine but I'm eyeing up the War Raider, normal then advanced). It's quicker than the Raider and has superior speed. In fact it's better in every way. I can't see one disadvantage about it over the Raider but many enhancements. (excerpt, I suppose, it loses an engine slot).

I'd like to get the advanced version then for the extra firepower but it requires 30,000 merits. As I only have 200 at the moment this may take a while!

Anyone else gone down this line and have a war raider or any experience of them.

Am I on the right tack with doing this ?

Thanks

The War Raider is a very nice ship and I use one for daily quests and soloing. However it's a big jump to get the Advanced War Raider. The only way to get this ship is to gather 30,000 merits. And you can only get merits from killing enemy players. So far I have a couple of thousand merits, so it's going to be a long haul to be able to get the upgrade. I'd imagine weeks of play time. Getting the Advanced Raider is an easier option though as it just requires an investment of cubits Therefore it's probably better to compare the Advanced Raider with the standard War Raider as this will be the option for quite a while.

As you say the War Raider has a slightly higher top boost speed over the Advanced Raider (85 v 80) but otherwise they have almost identical flank speed (55), turn rate (50) and acceleration (12). The War Raider does use a little more energy to get about but it's pretty insignificant. The big difference is that the Advanced Raider has two additional engine slots while the War Raider has an additional hull slot and weapon slot. So it seems that the Advanced Raider properly equipped (more engine slots) will out perform the War Raider while the War Raider will hit harder (more weapon slots) and can be hit harder (more hull slots). I like the fact that I can carry a mining gun while still having three cannons equipped. On an Advanced Raider using a mining gun will obviously cut the available weapon slots down to two. Personally I prefer the balance of the War Raider but can see the appeal of the Advanced Raiders speed and agility in a dog fight.

I'm finding it simple enough to run my Advanced Heavy Raider alongside my War Raider. I make sure I don't duplicate equipable items but share one between both ships. So for example I have a single medium range missile launcher that I've upgraded to Lv 4. I move it between ships as required and therefore save the costs of buying and upgrading two launchers. Seems obvious but it took me a while to work that one out

I'd get a War Raider, not worry too much about upgrading it to an Advanced War Raider any time soon and switch between the two ships depending on what you're doing. I know Oldie runs a War Raider almost all the time so he's probably the expert. i just use mine for daily quests.

Wish that worked between Light <> Medium <> Heavy ships, I have a light and a medium ship so end up upgrading both.  I've reverted to upgrading the Advanced Heavy Raider in preference to the Sceptre and will be saving my tylium & cubits for the Hel.

I agree it's all a balancing act. I'm enjoying the Spectre when in a Squad, especially on Mine defence but for venturing out on my own I like the War Raider. I'm sure I could use the Heavy Raider for solo stuff but I've benefited from the 'Run Away' speed of the War raider too many times now :)

Maybe it's just me but I swear my War Raider doesn't turn as quickly or as sharply as my advanced Raptor even though they're listed as the same turn rate?

Am I imagining this?

Depends on the number of gyros you have installed and then upgraded to whatever level.  does your other ship have more or better gyros installed?

No, I did a straight swap out. The only thinkg the war raider had less was one booster. Perhaps it's just me or the graphics being deceptive.

In theory they should perform the same as you say. The only way the Raider could out perform the War raider is through the two extra engine slots. But if you don't have anything that would boost your Raiders turn rate I think it must be something to do with the games graphics. The War raider is a physically bigger ship than the Raider, so it must be a visual thing?
