Title: Legendary Weapon update
Post by: TeaLeaf on October 24, 2011, 01:09:25 PM
People were asking last night, so here's the update:

I need a further 193 Seething Cinders.  This equates to about 10 more boss kills (normal kills give circa 18, heroic kills give circa 22, so an average of 20 per kill and 10 bosses should do it).

I then need to collect 250 Smouldering Essences and the Heart of Flame.
-Smouldering Essences drop at about 7 per Heroic boss kill, so 7 weeks allowing for not all boss kills being on Heroic and the fact you can't channel Ragnaros as there is no corpse
-the Heart of Flame is looted following a Ragnaros kill (any mode)

....and that completes the legendary quest line.  So by end of December and roughly when 4.3 comes out we should have completed our first guild legendary weapon chain.

Wow, that is quite some time it's taking. I wonder if it's that much faster with a 25 men raid group. After all, it's been some weeks now since the first legendary staves got taken.

77 Seething Cinders left, which is about 4 bosses worth.  We have 3 bosses left this week, so I'll be onto the Smouldering Essence phase by the second boss I hope!

We got lucky with our Seething CInder drops last night and managed to complete the Seething Cinder stage of the quest line.  So we're now onto the final slog, draining 250 Smouldering Essences from the corpses of dead Firelands raid bosses before finally looting the Heart of Flame from Ragnaros.  So we're on track to complete the legendary weapon just before the 4.3 patch comes out!

(my thanks go to Blizzard who in their infinite wisdom have made it 3 times slower to get the legendary weapon completed in a 10 man raid compared to a 25 man raid)

Difficult question.  I'd probably defer making a decision until the first person is about to complete the essence part of the quest line and then make a decision.  By then you'll know how close to 4.3 you are and if you feel it is worth it.  Certainly with the nerfbat they have already said will be applied to the 'legendary' in 4.3 it appears it will only be as good as first tier drops and so will be replaced quickly by normal raid drops in the new content.  It might save you 8,100 gold unless you're committing to completing the quest line in PUGs or social groups post 4.3.

Personally I'm expecting the 'legendary' I anticipate completing in December to be out-dated and replaced in January.   Damn shame really given the longevity that Blizzard have designed into most other legendary weapons.   Unfortunately the fact that Blizzard designed the required drops to take about 3 times longer to complete in a 10 man raid than in a 25 man raid means that by the time the 4.3 patch comes out, most 25 man raids will have seen 4-5 legendary weapon completions and most 10 man raids will never see more than 1 legendary weapon completion.

An interesting and frustrating side effect of this elongated quest for a legendary weapon in 10 man raiding is the class balance issues we are having to deal with.  For example, given that the legendary is a dps caster weapon:

-you can have 1 person collecting stage 1 drops
-1 person collecting stage 2 drops
-1 person collecting stage 3 drops

So of your typical 6 dps slots, 50% have been locked out by caster dps before you pick the rest of the raid team.   This problem was discussed in Council recently and given the slow speed of weapon completion we decided that with regret, it would not be a situation we would allow to dictate our raid team selection in future as it is so patently unfair to other dps classes (e.g. melee and hunters).  This will mean that in the future we might have elements of the quest line (stage 1 or stage 2 drops) where we have nobody in the raid instance to collect those drops.   It was a tough decision to make, but Blizzard have backed us into a corner on this and we felt it was a decision that had to be made to maintain fairness to other raid classes.
