Post by: Snokio on November 08, 2011, 08:23:13 PM
.....What ....already I hear you cry!

Yes, big disappointment, and yes, maybe I haven't given it a chance, it's only been 1 hour and already had enough :(

Have to say graphically there has been no progress...I mean..well......at all, everything on high etc and next to BF3, it looks poor, this was defo made for console! I found everything looks big, oversized and close up.

SP: Not tried it yet, this could be the only thing going for it?

MP: Well, it uses the matchmaking system similar to MW2 (which I never played) this is the only place by the looks where you can rank up, there is dedicated servers, but you have to enable them! and these are not ranked, you can have your own private server with all the toys unlocked by the looks of it. Also many options on private server as to the type / mode you want.

The gameplay, very much run and gun, been on 3 maps, and they are small, same sort of size as the other COD'S, plenty of boundaries to contend with (one using chairs and tables no less! They must nail them down ). Can it be tactical? Maybe, not on a full server I doubt, way to hectic (already knifed 6-8 people!)

Is this starting to sound like a rant? Sorry about that

Some may enjoy this, but there has been no advances in this game over the others, well, apart from the price! I will continue to see if there is anything that could save this game, there is a survival and co-op mode which sounds interesting.

but other than that, Can I want my money back please!

I actually like the spec ops single player stuff (cos trying to connect with a friend is broke !!!) the challenges are fun all agreed the graphics are no better or worse than Black Ops, multiplayer works (ish) but is not ideal
summ up nice fun challenges in spec ops bit (cept co-op) multi (is what it is) single player (yawnmungus)

I'm not really suprised by the graphics being the same. As far as I can tell it's still Call of Duty 4, just the subtitle gets updated. Not sure if that warrants keeping the gfx engine the same but I guess that's one way to look at it. In the same vein, you could say that because it's still the same story, it makes little sense to do a complete overhaul of the graphic engine. There was some polishing from MW1 to MW2 I believe, and it feels about the same going from 2 to 3.

Moving on, I'm not playing this game multiplayer. Not much of an online shooter fan, and from what I've seen in this game it's not much more than hopping around tossing bullets all over the place with a little RPG mixed in to make it entertaining for more than 2 rounds.

What I absolutely loved about the Modern Warfare series so far is the Single player storyline. I was looking forward to ending that storyline in MW3 (if it does indeed end, I don't know yet ), but I have to say, so far it's 50/50 in MW3 for me. They've certainly added a load of cool new scripted events and original scenario's, but I think they overdid it a little on the action side of things. The bridge between MW2 and MW3 is a bit vague in some places, and the missions in the game are chockfull of action. Keeps you running, driving and shooting through the missions alright, but it seems like there's hardly any recap moments for the story, just a rollercoaster of action. That's not a bad thing in itself, but it leaves a bit of a mark on the story part, which used to be so intruiging, imo. I'm only on the 2nd mission of Act 2 though, so this may change of course.

Then there's the SP difficulty. I play on Veteran because I want some degree of difficulty to the game, not just rush through blindly and hardly getting killed. In MW1 and 2 I used to get stuck on some parts of a mission for a good 30 mins, and it really felt like fighting for every inch of ground forward, and a victory once you reach the end. I just played through MW1 again to refresh myself on the story, in fact. On Veteran, and despite knowing what was coming because I played it before, it still took me a good few nights. Now, doing the same on MW3 but in completely new missions, I've already gone through Act 1 in about 2.5 hours. Could be me getting ace at this game but it feels like the game is easier ;-)

Bottom line: I'm glad I didn't put down any money for this game, as it's definetly not worth the price tag in my opinion. It feels more like DLC, indeed. But then I guess that goes the same for MW2.

The graphics are a noticeable step forwards. The engine has been pushed about as far as it can go now and is showing its age, but it doesn't look bad, and it is clearly distinguishable from the other two games. However having said that any brand new computer game should make a gaming rig work, because of the obvious console slant some of the graphics features that have made recent PC games like Metro 2033 games look so great are very much lacking here. That makes it very easy to max out settings, but means a player will never say wow maxing it out.

As for the Single Player, it's good. It's not great but it's no MoH - I think that lowered my opinion on all FPS games permanently. The invisible boundaries are kept under control and although linear and scripted it is still reasonably fun to play. CoD has never been a game which left the player wondering which direction to go. They've tended to be interactive movies played over a similar time scale. I find it hard to justify spending more than the cost of a blu-ray on a game of this sort for single player only. A typical blu-ray is ~£15 so after I've tackled the single player which seems on par with my expectations I need to find out if the multiplayer is worth the remaining £12 I paid. That all depends on dedicated servers. In the CoD games we've played here I've always got more than value for money from them, playing them weekly all but exclusively with dmw. If this game isn't adopted I'm struggling to see myself valuing the multiplayer that much because even on dedicated servers it's hard to find a good CoD match. But just like BO killed MW 1 dead I imagine this will kill BO dead so I thought I'd get it sooner rather than later.

More reviews here:

Interesting that the critics (7 in total) give it 81 out of 100, but the user score (1794 so far) give it a 1.6 out of 10  .

Must say i do want to try the SP

Not that suprising. Critics can't give too low ratings, especially with a hyped high profile game like CoD, or they're not gonna get any more games to review ;-) Which makes it all the more of a paradox that they're called critics, because they can rarely be critical ;-)

Why does recycling a building make any real difference? Plenty of parts from plenty of games are reused. It happens all the time.

In fact I would have quite liked if they'd recycled ALL of the old maps from previous games into the MP game. I haven't played it yet, but I haven't read that they have. Basically that's just pretty low. It's the same engine so importing it should be easy and then the map shortage and needing to play the original 2 games would be gone...only problem is they can't sell as many £12 map packs...

So that's my opinion. Reusing stuff doesn't bother me. Most of Half Life is reused in one way or another but I still think that's an amazing series of games.

Does a re-used building model/texture really detract from your enjoyment of the game?

It seems like a fairly obvious thing to do, if you're a developer with a mental publishing deadline to meet.

i think my gripe is that it's a £40 game, some paid the £99 cost but thats their proactive

So being a £40 game......with a multi million revenue (more than movies IIRC), I would not expect a game to bring a fresh models, textures and well, generally take it to the next level like what BF3 has done, It has failed on all attempts,

I know some of the issues I have raised seems like I'm on a hate crusade, but this is just my review and opinions, and everyones opinion is as valid as the next :)

TBH they lost me after COD4, I bought Black Ops but never really "got into it", now it just seems like equine necrophilia flagellation.

Please remember opinions are like bums, we've all got em and I'm old.

Just finished the single player campaign.

Was short overall but it was full of action and I really liked it.

Multiplayerwise I will see whether I want to play online or not.

What I will say is this game is the sequel to cod4 we should have had and the ability to use our own free server is available to us.

Whether people will want to fork out £39.99 is another matter.

However bf3 is now £38.00 on amazon and has less than 3 copies left in stock.

It has alot of things to give as mw2 did but now we can actually play on a dedicated server.

Anyone tempted?

Very funny Charlie Brooker SP review here (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/nov/13/charlie-brooker-modern-warfare-3)
Sample:
QuoteIt's about precision and nimble fingers. Just like darning a sock in a hurry. Or creating tapestry against the clock. In  other words, Modern Warfare 3 would be nothing but a gigantic  needlework simulation were it not for the storyline, which is the most  homoerotic tale ever created in any medium, including Frankie Goes to  Hollywood videos.
