For me, it's Bjørn Berge today. Norwegian blues guitarist and singer with a range reaching from bluegrass to rock. Loads of good stuff in his discography.

Last 48 hours it's been a heavy dose of a less well known but brilliant Norwegian electronica/trance DJ called Naden and his latest release 'Murmuration' which I bought on Thursday.   The track builds progressively through to 4:50 and then let's you have it with both barrels.   Fantastic track and one that is going to be used in the next DMR kill video.

This is a brilliant track from Deadmau5, made all the more interesting when you understand that he made this track as an instrumental during a 22 hour livestream from his home studio, a fan then took the instrumental and added vocals and re-tweeted it to him, he then hooked up the lyrics & vocalist with his manager and a few hours later he has a completed track.

....and this was the reaction from Deadmau5 when he first heard Chris James' vocals recorded over his instrumental.  Audio only, NSFW, but great to listen to the creative process in real time!

....and some of the livestream is here:

For those interested, here's the Ray Bradbury short story that inspired Deadmau5 to make the track (The Veldt) and subsequently the lyrics by Chris James that then blew him away when he heard them.

Lovely bit of trance from last summer.   Bassline intro, slowly builds percussion layers, synths and finally vocals arrive 2:30 into the track and elevates to a wonderful uplifting melodic trance.   Check your feet, they're tapping away to this one!

Gearing up for West Coast Riot. Only a couple more days, and I'm at an all-out punk party in Göteborg.

Some of the bands that'll be there that I'm looking forward to:

Rancid! Hell yeah! Finally I get to see them live, which means I now only lack two bands from a list of ten I set up a few years ago (The ten bands faust82 has to see before he dies: Rancid, NoFX, The Offspring, Bad Religion, Pennywise, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Bouncing Souls, Iron Maiden and Turbonegro). In other words, time to make up a new list! Anyway, Rancid are playing in southern sweden on thursday, so I'm leaving Norway wednesday :D

Turbonegro are back, with brit Tony Sylvester replacing the former rock god turned scientologist Hans Dybvik. He should never have gotten sober, that ruined him :p

Anti-Flag, a former favourite I still return to from time to time. Self-righteous antiauthoritarianism just seems right in some situations :D

So, that, and other bands that'll be at the show, that's what I'm listening to today :D

Live and Let Die is easily the best theme. Second place for me is between The Living Daylights and You Know My Name.
And that's only because A-Ha is my guilty pleasure band (Take On Me is horrible, but they've got some good ones like Hunting High And Low, Celice, Summer Moved On...). If not for that, Chris Cornell would blow them completely out of the water.
I also realized I just ruined all my music cred with Ninja :p

Today it's been back to basics, listening through all the Pennywise albums in chronological order at work :D

I am listening the last few weeks maybe even months to "team dubstep" on spotify. They have loads of remixes and they have done it very nice it aint very hard dub they are using just very relaxing.
You won't find it on youtube so soz for the poeple that aint using spotify but here are 2 links of songs i like at the moment. (you need spotify to listen to them)

Skyfall (Dubstep Remix) by Team Dubstep (http://open.spotify.com/track/5j2uOWi0hiNsr1LTvJDupb)

You Bring Me Joy (Dubstep Remix) by Team Dubstep (http://open.spotify.com/track/40qf3UylljNbqkpqGHPqVg)

And a what more heavy dubstep song, and this time with youtube. Is a song used in the movie step up 4 (gallery dance)

And an old mix from AvB which I'm finding very restful on my eyes ears:

Been listening to some Guy J this morning and in particular this track.   He's an Israeli producer/DJ and he's been coming on real strong over the past few years despite being not that well known outside the dance music scene.   Give this one time to get into your bloodstream, you'll love it!   Most of his tracks fall into the melodic prog house/trance/electronica genres, so it should give you an idea as to what this will sound like.

for each new installation, I would play this.

After reading an article by Knut Schreiner (Writer, walking musical encyclopedia, but perhaps more known as the guitar god Euroboy from Turbonegro) today, I've been listening to the works of Burt Bacharach, particularly the Hal David / Dionne Warwick collaborations. There's some hidden genious to some of his compositions. Stuff you just don't notice under the easy listening exterior, not until you sit down and really listen. The true sound of the 60's :D

NoFX. Yes, it's peter pan punk moment again, refusing to grow up. Beers and pizza on a sunday with the tunes of my youth.

This is an 18 minute epic discussing the decline of the american society. Quite worth it just for the lyrics, but it does it all with the famous NoFX blend of hardcore punk and trying to hide their excessive musical skills. Quick transition, sharp puns and plenty of pure rage :D

Quote from: TeaLeaf;367149Skylarking - BT.

Lovely slow build up, great uplifting melody.   Trance at its best.   Released last week and picked up by AvB for his show and already been thrown into a couple of 2013 compilation albums by Armada.

Purchased and added to my collection.

And now I present you with the same guy, BT, making much, much better music :D (sadly, trance is not my thing...)

The album this track is from is incredible, and nothing like any of his other work. He made it for his daugther I believe. Either way one of my top 10 albums, superb from start to finish.

Also for those that like BF3 one of their songs is used for this video:

Forgot to reply to this so:

It's a nice album, even though I was never a huge glitch fan it's got enough ambient/scenscape to maintain my interest.  Reading about the album it does seem he wrote it for his daughter, she is reported to have been cradled in his lap for many of the writing/studio sessions (and appears in one of the videos as so).   The birth of your child can have a profound impact, shown in his radical change in direction, but BT seems to have realised that he needed something to pay the school fees so returned to the progressive/trance arena!

It's a hard point to concede, the generation of our parents gave us rock'n'roll. For evidence of how they still are able to kick ass, just check out this track by Heart. This is from their 2012 album Fanatic.

Fun facts: Check out the top two names on the album personnel roster:
When this was recorded, Ann was 62 and Nancy was 58!!!

A German DJ who plays and 'creates' his own music live, rather than the traditional DJ mixing style.   A mixing desk, Ableton Live and a few boxes of tricks produce some fabulous music.    The video is actually part of a documentary, but it has no narration and basically follows him about and plays a bit of each of the live gigs.    Real nice music and someone I'd like to see if he comes to the UK (I missed the one March date this year due to already having something booked).

Reminds me a bit of the Peter Gabriel videos from the eighties, particularly Sledgehammer, it's got that 'blocky' feel to it.   It's certainly vastly better than the majority of the videos pumped out these days though, but I'm not a huge fan of the music!

After a tip from one of our apprentices I've started listening to Nomy. The song Cocaine was good enough, but what makes it impressive is this is a one-man band. Most of the tunes are computer-generated, tracking and sequencing, but it's hard to detect sometimes.
Computer rock that sounds almost real. Weird.

No official music vids, but plenty of fan-generated out there. Of course, Youtube has horrible mastering, or maybe the fanvid creators all screwed up. Much crisper on Spotify or similar :D

Right now, The band Kvelertak (Norwegian for "Stranglehold") with the song Kvelertak, from the album Meir (More). Just to **** with you, they didn't put this one on their debut album called Kvelertak :p

I'm back to The Bouncing Souls, like every single summer since I first heard them.

A bit more melancholic this time though, with Lean On Sheena. Originally by Avoid One Thing, it suits the New Jersey sound of The Bouncing Souls a lot better.

Really crappy sound with the low-res Youtube clip though. I strongly suggest Spotify or Google Play Music for clearer, more punchy sound.

I'm not usually a fan of dnb, but I really liked a fair chunk of that set.  Bits of it were much more laid back than the normal frenetic stuff, very nice indeed

Particularly liked:

- first track of the mix: Etherwood - Hold Your Breath (Spectrasoul Remix), might even go buy that one
- Etherwood feat Hybrid Minds - The Time Is Here At Last (@48m)
- Etherwood - Etherwood Album Mix (@55m)

So I probably need to go and listen to more Etherwood tracks, I feel some mellow dnb being cued up on my media player!

Tonight I've been listening to a South African DJ called '2Lani the Warrior', who has been helping develop the deep house scene in that country.   This is a 90 minute mix of what he terms 'deep soulful house'.   Real nice background listening.

The mix is a free download from Pulse Radio in the above link.

You can pick up another free download mix from the Deep inspiration Show:

Today: Norwegian rock/rap band OnklP & De Fjerne Slektningene (OnklP & The Distant Relatives).

The lyrics probably won't make sense to you. Then again, rappers rarely do. What keeps me coming back to this band is the fact that they're probably the only viable combination of rap and rock ever. It's usually a recipe for disaster, more often than not stinking to high heaven of Nu Metal. This, however, is a straight-up allstar rock lineup (featuring members from Turbonegro and Oslo Ess) fronted by one of the few norwegian rappers I have any kind of respect for.

So.. may be worth it to you just for the riffs and the music video. The song is about self-doubt and having a nasty creature on your back telling you you're worthless (and the frontman's love/hate relationship with it). The nasty creature is played by norwegian comedian Atle Antonsen, perhaps most known abroad for his portrayal of the distrubed therapist Dag in the eponymous show.

Yeah, had a good start, not so keen of the middle but liked the end. She writes her own stuff and is pretty decent IMO.

Heard a few of her other songs which sounds a little like a James bond theme tune (in a good way), she can defo sing live though.

Taylor Momsen shows that having been amongst the guilty for Gossip Girl doesn't mean you're a total writeoff, fronting the band The Pretty Reckless.

Decent southern/groove-flavoured alt metal on this track, bordering more on grunge, hardcore punk, and straight-up alternative in other tracks. Not unpleasant.
I'm not opposed to how she dresses in this video either :D

A wonderfully hypnotic 15 minute journey which I have only just found this week (courtesy of its slot in the playlist for the most recent Deep House Cat Show (https://soundcloud.com/deephousecat/deep-house-cat-show-marmot-mix-feat-florian-lenz))

The second phase (from just after 5 minutes) is tremendous and I can see fitting into a monster deep house sets.

... acoustic punk rock.

A lot of the aging punk front men are doing solo folk/acoustic stuff. Greg Graffin has released a couple of brilliant albums, the first under the pseudonym Cold As The Clay and the second as himself. One that I keep coming back to is Acoustic by Joey Cape and Tony Sly.
Front men and singers of Lagwagon and No Use For A Name respectively, they did this album using some of their better songs and re-orchestrating them. Justified Black Eye is one of the more powerful songs by No Use For A Name, and it keeps appearing on the playlist whenever the boys are gathered. Under the guise of anthem punk the text is actually quite heavy, and in a calm acoustic guitar and strings orchestration it becomes down-right haunting.

Dizzy Mizz Lizzy! That's a blast from the past, can't believe I forgot about them :D
Then again, by the time they broke through, the grunge/alternative wave were giving way to the wave of southern californian punk sweeping the country with Bad Religion and The Offspring at the forefront. That became the sountrack of my youth, and still follows me today.
This week I'm dusting off the No Use For A Name collection. The music itself is simplistic, but the lyrics of Tony Sly are brilliant.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the intercontinental radio news."

The writing's on the wall, but no one cares at all
To convey a message that we wrote ourselves.
Destroy the walls we mend and burn the candle at both ends.

(I really think we are)
Becoming more mindless of the heart (becoming everything we hate),
Building our castles for the future (a Trojan Horse is at the gate),
Built by the enemy that we made.

This false sincerity, we hear celebrities.
"Buy a hybrid if you can with ten years of your fruit stamps."
Caught myself listening to sheltered excuses for human beings.

(So it becomes elite.)
They separate, then what have we got? (Nothing in common with their wealth.)
One clip can change public opinion (one sin can send you straight to hell).
Learned how to lie and not get caught, more **** in the melting pot.

Shut out majority with riches (their words become more valuable)
Than the voice of a million starving children (that they have a million ways to solve).
Left freedom bleeding on the roadside, we believe the biggest lie.

Some Norwegian darkness anno 2005 today, Madrugada - The Kids Are On High Street.
.. though they had to go to London to get enough bleak locations for the music video :p

It'll wake up some change
Stones in the pipeline
Like some new mountain range
Leave the lowlands behind
They take your photograph
You come into existence
You realize it's your path
In this very instant

Some heroes are we
To pass outside these gates
We know well to adjust
Adjust to what it takes
You add another year to this
And it all has gone to waste
All the plans have been made
To pursue our own separate faiths
They take your photograph
You come into existence
You realise its your path
In this very instant
... Ohhhh

The kids are on high street
The kids will not sleep tonight
The kids got into a knife fight
We trained them well
They're gonna be alright

I've been trying to interfere
I can't even wait
To get away from you
Cause it's only in hindsight
That we will know what was right to do
I always thought we had it made
Ambitious were the plans we laid
They take your photograph
You come into existence
Yyou realise its your path
In this very instant

Back to punk this weekend. Against Me! is a bit more alt-rock leaning than I usually listen to, but the lyrics are pretentious and lofty, so... :p

I was a teenage anarchist, looking for a revolution.
I had the style, I had the ambition.
I read all the authors, I knew the right slogans.
There was no war but the class war.
I was ready to set the world on fire.
I was a teenage anarchist, looking for a revolution.

Do you remember when you were young and you wanted to set the world on fire?

I was a teenage anarchist, but the politics were too convenient.
In the depths of their humanity all I saw was bloodless ideology.
And with freedom as the doctrine, guess who was the new authority?
I was a teenage anarchist, but the politics were too convenient.

Do you remember when you were young and you wanted to set the world on fire?

I was a teenage anarchist, but then the scene got too rigid.
It was a mob mentality, they set their rifle sights on me.
Narrow visions of autonomy, you want me to surrender my identity.
I was a teenage anarchist, the revolution was a lie.

Do you remember when you were young and you wanted to set the world on fire?

I was a teenage anarchist.

Revisiting my late teens today while hitting the CCNA books.

The Hellacopters, Swedish cock rock band who were in the prime around the turn of the millennium, here with the track Toys and Flavors from the 2000 album High Visibility.

I saw Hellacopters live in Germany once, they were great fun.

I've been listening to this cover of Led Zep's 'No Quarter' by Tool. Really very good indeed.

Friends of mine. The drummer passed away 2 weeks ago at the age 24 when he was walking home and got hit by a drunk driver. Was a great chap! Give it a listen.

Pop punk from my youth, always hits the spot when I feel like I need cheering up. For instance today, after having to show the Microsoft license auditors around.

The Descendents - I'm The One. Coffee Mug is also in the mix today.

A rare opportunity to see Lane 8 live in this 'acoustic' (if you can call it that) set, with Solomon Gray on vocals.  Beautiful music.

Today I'm checking out ARY, electronica-driven Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter.

First came to my notice for the title team of Norwegian geopolitical drama Nobel - Fred for envher pris (Peace at any cost).

So... ARY - The Sea (the only cut I could find was the title mix)

Since it's still christmas I was listening through the Bad Religion christmas album released a couple of years ago. A decent one, no mockery, just a punk take on the classics.
Hidden as a bonus track was a mix of their arguably biggest hit, American Jesus. Found the video for that, and it is in the customary horrible Epitaph music video upload quality.

Still, a decent song.

Heard this on RadioParadise a few days ago and it's now a firm favourite. The track is off the album Undercurrent which ought to be listened to on decent cans as the acoustic guitar/mandolin combo is so good.

Here, though, is an acoustic version of 'House of Mercy' by Sarah Jarosz. Enjoy the folky-bluegrass chill.

Sometimes you need to get into a groove to write that difficult report.  Today was just such a day, so I deployed some Pryda on loop, which had the desired (progressive house) trance-like effect.  Noise-cancelling headphones on, volume turned up, and begin to write the report......

The result was one report written in half the usual time and some minor complaints from the office on the floor below about my regular foot tapping and chair bouncing over the past two hours.  :norty:

Favourite bit - when the bassline really kicks in from about 1:30.  Enjoy!

Debating whether this may be a punt as it's down the road.

Throwback 80's or what.....

http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/whats-on/audley-heritage-live-here-and-now/

Jason Donovan, Midge Ure, Five Star, Hot Chocolate, Altered Images, T'Pau and Toyah Wilcox.

For me, Midge Ure. Was a big Visage fan then Ultravox.

I have tickets to see Winwood next Friday in Amsterdam, throwback indeed.

That solo by Price is legendary, the song plays 50% through then he comes on and say to hell with you lot, I'm gonna own this song. Amazing.

The English Heritage thing Pen, I have to say Midge Ure is a winner, T'Pau was the first ever live gig I saw in my teens, very embarrassed about that, and the others well not my thing the 80s generally.

I missed my wedding anniversary seeing Kylie many years ago! Well not her specifically but my wife uses her presence at the Music Industry Awards in London as an excuse to guilt me out for not taking her for dinner that evening. I did see her walk almost within touching distance past me. I never went to the event for her, honest, just the free beer.  :norty:

I'd rather get recommendations as I'd like to hear some new music that I'd not normally listen too.

I like;

pop
jazz
rock
classical

A suggestion, do what I do. Listen to a radio station you like and when a piece of music piques your interest then checkout the artist's catalogue.

My personal fave is Radio Paradise (http://www.radioparadise.com/rp_2.php?#). It's an internet station with no commercials and excellent quality streams (including FLAC) over multiple devices.

I think you mentioned you use Spotify right? On there you have a bunch of Daily Mix Playlists, also Discover Weekly, where you get recommendations based on what you tend to like already. I suggest you try these out for a quick load of new songs, I know after years I still get 15+ new songs per week from Discover Weekly.

Greig, really good tip on Big Boss Man. I've been missing that kind of music, I find myself listening to stuff like that from time to time. (Particularly after re-watching Lock, Stock...)

The past couple of days I've been going back to recordings of old punks doing acoustic versions of their better stuff.
Links to original punk version below the videos for comparison.

Tony Sly (front man and main writer for No Use For A Name) did several albums like that up until his death in 2012. I think the acoustic versions are sometimes even better than the originals, as they let the lyrics shine more and also reveal more of the brilliance in the melodies. Also, it broadens the audience, people who would otherwise never hear the songs get to take part.
Even live, the stuff was great. Justified Black Eye and Soulmate are especially good in their acoustic dress.

Dr. Greg Graffin of the band Bad Religion (yes, he really is a doctor. He holds a PhD in Zoology from Cornell, the title of his dissertation being "Evolution, Monism, Atheism, and the Naturalist World-View: Perspectives from Evolutionary Biology) also has a few acoustic versions on his consciense. He's also done a couple of solo albums in the genre of bluegrass, of all things.

Today, norwegian singer/songwriter Sondre Justad. Positive chap..
The lyrics may escape a lot of you, so helpfully included below.

[Verse 1]
Kor e sangen vi pleide å hør? | Where's the song we used to hear?
Kor e lukta av vår? | Where's the smell of spring?
Her e bare menneska uten ansikt, uten stemme | Here's just people without faces, without voices
Kor e følelsen av å vær fri? | Where's the feeling of being free?
Av å vite at sola fins? | Of knowing the sun exists?
Her e berre fugla uten vinga, fugla uten klør | Here's just birds without wings, birds without claws

[Pre-chorus]
Liv uten fremtid | Life without a future
Forgifta håp og tru | Poisoned hopes and faith
Himmelen forsvinn | The sky disappears
Og tia renn snart ut | And time is running out

[Chorus]
De e ingenting | They are nothing
Ingenting fins lenger | Nothing exists any more
Ingenting | Nothing
De e ingenting | They are nothing

[Verse 2]
Kor e fargan vi pleide å se? | Where's the colors we used to see?
Kor e alle drømman? | Where are all the dreams?
Her e berre hav uten vann, ord uten meining | Here's just oceans without water, words without meaning
Kor e bilde av familien? | Where's the picture of the family?
Av vennan og dansen? | Of the friends and the dance?
Her e berre minna uten farge, blikk uten varme | Here's just memories without colors, looks without warmth

[Pre-chorus]

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Det e tomt | It's empty
En sommer uten varme, vinter uten kulde | A summer without warmth, winter without cold
Det e tomt | It's empty
Storm uten vind og regn uten vann | Storm without wind and rain without water
Helt tomt | Completely empty
Ingen puls, tomme gata uten hus | No puls, empoty streets without houses
Helt tomt | Completely empty
De ler ikke, de fins ikke, de e borte | They're not laughing, they don't exist, they're gone

[Chorus repeats]

Brass Against, covering Rage Against The Machines with a full horn section.

I'd say their instrumentation is more showband, a brass band is after all a much loved respite from woodwinds (though a saxophone is far preferable to a clarinet).

So I just watched the episode of Luke Cage where Gary Clark Jr plays Bright Lights. There's a spoiler there so I won't repeat the story but if anyone else likes that set of shows, you'll know there is a music thing going on in the Harlem's Paradise Club and they have music played live throughout the show.

Well Clark playes 3 songs on the show, Bright Lights being one, and it was the first song in his Glastonbury performance.

I recommend Luke Cage for a bit of a slower but still quality Marvel hero but the music, oh boy, season 1 was amazing, 2 is taking shape.

Anyway, Gary Clark Jr, I could watch this end to end:

A bit of a departure from my normal fare. Sometimes, I do love a bit of brass band music.

This is a particularly good recording of Concierto d'Aranjuez, from the 1996 film Brassed Off. Also well worth a watch by the way.

Not the same without Layne Staley. William DuVall does an admirable job though, the vibe is there and he's eerily similar in style.

Need to up my pace at work today, and what works better than the unholy blend of Norwegian rock&roll, punk and metal that is Kvelertak?

One of their older songs this time. Mjød (Mead). A little song about how the gods gave us alcohol :)
Dual meaning, since they're referring to when Odin stole the mead of the jotun Suttung, the Mead of Poetry. Anyone who drank it became a bard :p

but i think my favourite is:

special mention to Dark all day single though, inspired by the film "The Lost Boys" and even has the same sax player from the beach concert scene from 1987!

I found Smooth Genestar online last night and had a really relaxing time chilling out to his albums which are also delightfully cheap to buy, you can get e.g. the 'Last Train Downtown' album for â,¬5 on Bandcamp (https://smoothgenestar.bandcamp.com/album/last-train-downtown).  Fantastically mellow foot-tapping!

Quote from: Cyan MusicSmooth Genestar (http://www.cyan-music.com/artists-smooth-genestar.html) is seriously addicted to all kind of groovy downtempo music. The roots in Downtempo, Chillout and Lounge are reaching back to the middle of the 90s, by legendary CD-series like Space Night and Cafe del Mar, labels like Elektrolux and inspiring artists like Saafi Brothers, Aural Float, Fresh Moods or Nightmares on Wax, just to name a few. The sound of Smooth Genestar is a balance between the origin vibes of the mid 90s and contemporary sounds. Since 15 years the producer is busy in sound design, and besides a huge library of sounds, samples and patches, he also still prefer the unique sound of hardware samplers and synthesizers, the usability and sound of analog mixing consoles and the quality of outboard effects.

And now for something completely different (I could mention a naked male pianist here but most of the readers wouldn't have a clue :D )

Alt-j's 'Tessellate' is a favourite of mine. Heard this bonkers remix on Radio Paradise t'other day and thought I'd share it here.

ABGT is great.   I was a bit miffed that the A&B Acoustic III was cancelled (was scheduled for Royal Albert Hall until COVID hit), so Louise and I are hoping to pick up tickets for the rearranged dates.

Answer a really dumb question for me. Is the DJ at the front actually doing anything? Surely this is just prerecorded :g:
Title: Today I'm listening to.....
Post by: smilodon on May 05, 2020, 09:56:43 AM
As far as I am aware a DJ set is where a DJ takes a number of separate pre-recorded tracks and mixes them together in real time to create the music you hear. Obviously it varies by DJ but the best will usually (while having an overall plan) mix and blend the music as the moment takes them, often in response to the audience and the DJ's mood. The closest approximation I could think of would be a 'one man' jazz band jamming together.

Of course there are DJ's that probably just pre-record the whole set and fake the knob twidding effects. Two DJ's working in tandem share the work and compliment each others music. Even more like a jam session. It's usually easy to spot when a DJ is not 'creating music' as each nights set will be the same and there will be little or no consideration of the audiences mood or reactions.

A live set is where a DJ actually creates the music from nothing using drum machines, synths ,computer generated sounds and loops. It's 'real' performed music.

Of course a crowd of twenty something's off their face on mescaline probably won't care either way  :norty:

I'll disagree slightly with Smilo's definition, although mainly to say there is no exact definition.  Anyway, for Oldie the 'live' bit yes the Tinlicker set was live.  Clearly there are samples and they play loops and tracks, but it is mixed live.   Most DJs in sets like this do a lot and the whole 'what does a DJ do' is worth more explanation as very little is pre-recorded, perhaps with the exception of some radio sets.

Old School
DJing used to be pick music to suit the mood or event/venue and play it.   How you put the tracks back to back varied depending on where you were and what kit you had.
Back then pretty much all you had were two decks that you could start and stop (but not particularly fast to start), volume controls and a cross fader.  The belt driven decks did not really allow you to start the record in a fraction of a second, so you ended up manually bringing the record up to speed and letting go at precisely the right time to allow the track to start when you wanted.
Many DJs used to treat their 'set' like a mini radio show and talk across the links from record to record (thus not having to have any mixing skills).   Most radio DJs still do this today.
Really advanced stuff was when Citronics brought out things like the punch transformer button that allowed you to instantaneously play another track instead of the first for the duration you held the button down.  Typically you would be playing track A, then for 8 beats 'punch' insert the bass beat for two bars into track A, then cutover entirely to track B.
Direct drive turntables (the legendary Technics SL1200/1210s) moved the capabilities forward a lot as it allowed much more accurate starting of records and more importantly the accurate control of speed so that you could start adjusting and matching timings of tracks to align.
With speed control came more beat matching (where the beat of the incoming track is matched to the beat of the outgoing track during the crossover), but you still had to pick the records and play them in the right order - and you had no way to deal with clashes of musical key.
Analogue tech stopped much more than this happening.  My early DJ days were spent making sure I could start a track on time, at the right speed and then using the volume controls/crossfaders to blend the tracks as best I could.

Modern DJs & the Digital World
Now that most music is digital the control you have over it has increased exponentially so almost all DJ 'sets' have significant elements of 'live'.
There are relatively few 'fully live' DJs, but people like Deadmau5 will do sets which have significant live elements played over underlying tracks.  Most DJs like this make heavy use of something like Ableton Live (https://www.ableton.com/en/live/) to control the various sounds and you'll see many controller trigger pads (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61EQCrAEg_E) and effects panels to allow them to loop, add instruments/samples to develop, change and enhance the live sound.  The degree to which each does this varies from almost none to lots.  DYOR.

Most modern DJs as we think of them do their live work in a limited but still very comprehensive way.
Firstly there is a massive amount of work that goes into preparing the set beforehand.
- finding the tracks (the sheer volume of music available today is staggering and makes the job much harder today than it was 35-40 years ago imo)
- once you have the track you have to add the correct meta data for your DJ controller/mixer/software to read.  Each track will have various tags added, like beat grids (guess what, many tracks change speed during the track), cues, loops, flips, tags, acapellas, breaks, let alone a DJ's personal tagging for the style or type of music, or a set type.
- you'll also be setting the speed (beats per minute - linked to the beat grids mentioned), and importantly the key of the track.  Certain keys mix well together, others don't.  Do a google search for the camelot wheel and you'll see which keys work with each other - the general rule is you can stick to the same number on the wheel, or the same letter.  So a track in C Major will mix well from a harmonic stand point with a track in A Minor, G Major or F Major.  If you try mixing in a track with any other key then the sounds will clash like buggery if played at the same time.
- once you have all your tracks set up in your software (Rekordbox/Serato/Traktor etc) then you have to pre-select a group of tracks for their set, typically about 100, and work out a preferred running order with perhaps some minor variations depending on crowd mood.  This allows them to know the transitions from track to track, plan the mix and how they will achieve it, and then deliver a good quality 'live' experience at the event.   They can do this because if you go to see e.g. Yotto, you know the type of music he will play and therefore he can pre-select a set to suit the crowd that he knows will be there for that event.   There are a few notable exceptions to this rule, like the ever youthful Carl Cox (who started DJing when I was DJing and still is), who still makes up almost all of his sets on the fly and travels with a huge library of tracks - when you see him you *never* know what you're going to get in terms of the decade it is from or the genre.

So, you've made it to the event or watch the youtube and all we see is some knobs being twiddled. What's going on?  Most DJs you see at events/clubs will be using Pioneer mixers, and the below pictured Pioneer DJM 2000 Nexus is a classic example of a 4-channel DJ mixer:

On the mixer you can see 4 vertically arranged and numbered input channels.  Each has several sections, but the important bits that are 'twiddled' during a set are mainly the 4 numbered input channels (with EQ bypass and filters) and the effects.
Most of the twiddling is with bypass filters (the three rotary controls typically aligned vertically above the volume control for that channel).  Commonly when you mix track A with track B you take out at least the bass from track B (if bass from both track A and track B run together then you get a horrible double heavy bass 'thwack' from the speakers and you run the risk of blowing a woofer).  Depending on the track you might also take out some of the mid range or high range too.   As you want to change tracks you reduce bass on track A, bring in bass from track B and eventually you end up fully into track B with no bass from track A.  The constant twiddling you see is the progressive decrease of one track's e.g. bass, and the simultaneous progressive increase of the bass from another track.  Now that's assuming you want to mix two tracks with two bass lines, but there are many other ways to mix a track, you could wait for a break in track A (hence the cue/break points set in your software), use a loop or effect to transition, use a sample to overlay from A to B, and many many more.

Typically a club or event will use a mixer like the 2000 Nexus set up with 2-4 Pioneer CDJs attached - a 2000 Nexus plus 2 x Nexus CDJs is about £5,500.  The bedroom DJ will tend to buy the 'controller' version (not the mixer and separate CDJs) so will end up with something that combines a bit of everything, something like this Pioneer DDJ-800, which is a much more affordable £800.

Also connected to the mixer/controller could be a number of other things to allow you more 'freedom' to create or adjust sound on the fly: samplers, trigger panels, sequencers, analogue effect panels, keyboards, MIDI instruments and perhaps all controlled by e.g. Ableton Live.

As the music is digital you can also, to a limited extent, adjust the key of a track to match another.   Care needs to be taken here as it can sound bleedin' awful when taken too far.

But at the end of the day you still need to choose the tracks and execute the mixes.   So that's a very brief(!) summary of what happens when the knobs get twiddled.  You can see some free-range knob twiddling in the below.

@Oldbloke - if you listen to the above Monique set you can see and hear the manual adjustments being made and the slight timing errors being adjusted on the CDJ jogwheels (every time she reaches out to slightly move the jogwheel she is either speeding up or slowing down the incoming track - which you will hear as the bass beats will not be perfectly aligned).

And as an example of someone doing a lot of 'live', here's a very recent live stream by Deadmau5 from his home studio in Toronto, which includes bonus mieows from his cat which you'll see lying on the LHS of his desk).

Edit: you know when you think "oh I'll just do a quick response to that" and then find yourself having written a frikkin essay?   Yeah well, sorry.   The ex-DJ in me got all excited again.

I’ve just been trialing Reaper. It’s very powerful but needs hours of exploration and patience. But for $60 it’s also very cost effective. I’ll probably buy it once the trial ends after 60 days. I have a few small things I still haven’t worked out how to do. Reaper has a very good forum.

I still need a mixing desk and a few midi foot pedals. Quite enjoying the keyboard and I’m remembering a few things I learned as a kid.

Just a quick shout out for this album again (3 CDs, 54 tracks).  DesignerGenes called me this pm and asked if I had heard this album yet (which I have thanks to my YT Music subscription).    Any ho, it is now released in its full glory and by goodness it is an absolute stunner if you like the Anjunadeep style of music.

Get some beer/gin/your drink of choice, put Anjunadeep 12 on and enjoy 4 hours 9 minutes of acoustic bliss.

Just wanted to share this, its one of my long time friends and his Mrs.  You may have heard me talk about them from time to time, they usually have a season in Ibiza in the summer and in the winter they are in the Alps playing at bars etc to earn a living.  Obviously within the current climate they haven't been able to do what they enjoy so much and have taken to YouTube on a more regular basis for them to to 'scratch that itch', so if you could check them out it'd be appreciated :)  they are very talented and lovely to listen to.

Can't go wrong with sea shanties, I have loved them ever since playing assassins creed black flag! I find them as great morale boosters and easy to sing along to. If people are interested in seeing more sea shanties then both I and Toby(Addx9) love the band https://www.youtube.com/user/thelongestjohns (https://www.youtube.com/user/thelongestjohns)

I have been listening to them more since covid to get a bit of boosted spirit on way to work and while at work. Can't wait for next Lan when we get to sing them, Karaoke night!!!  :flirty::yahoo:

I've fallen for this track hard, it's on repeat for extended periods during the day.    The Haitian 'tribal' vocals are awesome and complimented so well by the simple percussion and melody. I loved the Paul Simon album 'Graceland' and although these vocals are Haitian not South African, I think this reminds me of that musical style.

This is just such a HAPPY tune!

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. He's only released one album that he played drums on

Oh and he played the bass guitar

and the lead guitar

and keyboards

also piano

and the synthesizer as well.

Oh and he did the vocals which he wrote as well as writing all the music and produced the whole thing himself.

I was browsing through a few Youtube pages for content on a bluegrass  artist I like (Tony Rice, sadly passed away last December). And came across a guy who seems to make some nicely recorded home videos, nothing pro level but I stumbed upon a DJ called Kaskade, probably well known to those into that genre but here's one of his I liked:

Also the original page where I stumbled:   rather nice bluegrass.

Shoe Gazer Indie with a slighly mournful tone. Caught on the Inside is a standout track but it's actually a decent album.
