Title: Netflix- anyone tried it?
Post by: GhostMjr on January 10, 2012, 05:16:43 PM
I was driving around in the car today and Capital FM were really pushing Netflix.

It's a movie rental site where you can stream as many films and tv programmes as you like for £5.99 a month.

Has a free trial and you can cancel anytime.

Very tempted.

Netflix just magically appeared on my PS3 menu, so I might give it a go.

Apparently it accounts for some stupidly high percentage of all internet traffic in US, so its certainly popular!

It's the US version of Love Film (http://www.lovefilm.com/) that we get in the UK. It's huge in the US and seems to be positively received.

Actually Netflix and LoveFilm are rivals.

Netflix has only just started over here, so probably not many people will have had any experience yet, but LoveFilm has been running for years.

Lovefilm does streaming and physical disk postage/return. Steaming of new films will cost extra.

For £5.99 unlimited streaming, Netflix should soon put a huge dent in LoveFilm model for those with unlimited broadband.

LoveFilm = Amazon (acquired last year)
Netflix appears to be an independent PLC.

Maybe it's time to switch. Netflix also caused furore (<-if you're under 12, look it up) in the US as they hiked price to save business. Huffington is as good as anywhere to read about it.

Although looking at their front page, all the stuff there is about 3+ years old.

So maybe that's why it's so cheap.

I signed up for the free trial today, they stress how easy it is to cancel but that remains to be seen.

I streamed Drive Angry during my lunch hour over works wifi to my HTC.

I have to say the uninterrupted good quality stream was a great.
Looks like I'll have a month of lunchtime films to enjoy.

I have a netflix 'app' on my smart tv at home so I'll trial that tonight too.

Oops I meant Netflix is the US version of Love Film as in. Netflix is what the US have for streaming movies and we have Love Film. Wasn't very clear. Netflix has a habit of getting exclusive deals with distributors, so it will be interesting to see if they strike any deals for UK content. Although iPlayer and the ITV & Channel 4 players might make that impossible.
