If your on 20mb and your only getting 3 ish i would restart your modem, try different sites to try speed tests on. don't just trust one! If its still lower try modem only without a router as often its the router thats the issue.

Failing all of the above ring vm on 08000520431.

get them to test your power levels.

If you want the full 20mb get a 10-20 metre Ethernet cable and feed to the router. Wireless never gives the full speed and speed decreases the further away from the router you are.

802.11b offers up to 11 Mbps
802.11a and 802.11g offer up to 54 Mbps
802.11n offers up to 300 Mbps

.......so I'm not sure that the router is the problem unless it is seriously ancient and running on 802.11a and similarly ancient security protocols.

Virgin Media have had well publicised congestion problems with their core routing recently.  I suspect that's the real culprit, there are other posts on this forum about it in both BF3 and other sections.   Virgin Media are basically over-flowing at certain points on their network, however the good news is that they plan to double the fastest speed you can't get.

Hooking up with an ethernet cable would certainly rule out wireless as being a problem though.

I was with VM/NTL for years, and my experience was that every now and then my connection would turn to mush and the speed would drop off for no apparent reason. Turning off the modem for at least 10 minutes usually resolved the issue - have you tried that?

Is there a seperate modem, or do you just have a router plugged into the wall/phone socket?

It's worth giving VM a call about this, because it sounds like there's a problem somewhere. If you can blag your way past the terrible 1st line support (just play ball and reset everything again while you're on the phone with them), the 2nd line guys are actually very helpful.

It's the Virgin box that needs to be rebooted, not the Netgear one. Like I said, leave it off for a while and see if it un-borks itself.

A good ploy is to phone with the comment that your service has fallen through the floor, you've done all you can think of to sort it out but sadly you feel you will probably have to close your account and move to BT Infinity, therefore can someone advise as to how you end your contract. Make it clear that paying a early termination fee isn't an issue (even if it is) and you'll be put straight through to the 'OMG we're about to loose an account' UK based, brain in their head, authority to decide things, person. Leapfrogs the endless messing about with call centre drones and automated phone systems. Worked for me even though I had no intention of Leaving VM at all. For me it resulted in an Engineer within 48 hours and a little widget fitted to the cable going into my modem fixed everything. However if it is as people suggest general congestion while Virgin mess about upgrading their system then you might just have to live with it. However it wouldn't hurt to try the above in case it is in fact a local problem affecting just you.

If you mean change your external IP address then yes, it probably will.

Smilodon's advice is bang on - and it works with just about any company :)
