Hi,
Anyone out there on a BT Infinity connection ? I've been stuck on 1mb or less for the last god knows how many years.........and it seems that as of the end of this month i can get Infinity with an estimate of 29.6mb according to the BT site based on my home number....woohooo:yahoo:
So.....before i jump on in.......any experience of it out there ?
Cheers
Niel
They are saying it's available here from the 31st of this month and I would love to change on that date but I'm only on the 4th month of internet contract with O2 since moving house.
Doubt I would be able to get out of it, and I wouldn't want to pay the get out fees. Besides the service I'm getting now is very good. Although slow compared to what I could potentially get. 3.5 vs 40.
Big price difference too. Paying £9.50 at the moment.

As I said on TS to you last night Neil. the fibre service seems to be excellent, whether on Infinity/FTTC or FTTP. Highly recommended, but you don't need to go down the BT route, others offer the infinity service too.
I went with vm 50mb soon to be 100meg then 120meg over the summer.
Bt infinity is cheaper but (i have been told) there is speed throttling.
Never had an issue with my 50mb cable.
You might be able to barter down a price between them if your feeling greedy.
Regardless of what you get check out top cashback as going to a new company enables you to get a large amount of cashback: http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/member12455543412

...and there's no traffic shaping or throttling with VM? I thought everyone knew there is.
Thought you had had many issues with VM in the past tbh, if i recall you've posted about being throttling, bandwidth limited, traffic shaped and various other connection issues in the past - or am I misremembering?
Anyway, I'm happy with Brightstar; no throttling, no traffic-shaping no limits, no problem.
Virgin do have a loosely policed policy to stop serious downloading during their peak times. I've broken it once or twice and they've ignored me. I 'believe' they apply certain limits that are less restrictive than the ones they publish but don't publicise those limits. A rep I spoke to once told me that if I occasionally went over my limit I wouldn't see any throttling.
However VM do indeed have a throttling policy and will strangle you if you seriously go over the limits consistently.

For packages below 50meg there is traffic shaping and throttling.
For 100 meg and 50meg packages there is none.
Caps are imposed on lower speeds and there are alot of complaints on this.
As far as I know Brightstar are more geared towards business and lower traffic clients and they do charge alot more?
For normal household use the stability of a BT infinity or VM cable lines are fine for the avergae household.
For business and immediate diagnostic and support Brightstar would be better.
I am paying £35 unsure how much Brightstar charge now but for a ADSL line 3 years ago they were alot more expensive compared to virgin's service that was fibre to the home and not to the cabinet (ok some coaz might be used but its minimal compared to some installs of BT fibre to cabinet meaning you could still be 1.5km from the cabinet).
BT's infrastructure is lagging behind they are making improvements and you have been subject to the slower speeds before TL, luckily you were part of the upgrade to fibre in your area.
It's about value for money and paying higher price tags for zen for instance I personally can't fathom considering the amount of downtime I have ever had and that this can be counted on one hand.
VM feels a good deal to me, at the end of the day each of us spends our money how we like its just what you feel is right for you :).

That's not quite right - VM do throttle their 50mb package, quite heavily infact.
The quality of a Virgin Media cable connection depends almost entirely on your location. If you're in a high-retention area then it's going to suck. It's also worth considering that their support is dreadful, truly shockingly bad at times.
I've been with Zen (ADSL) since I moved, they're pretty damn awesome.[/COLOR]
zen has been epic been with them for adsl and fibre true they cost more but the service is 2nd to none and virgin traffic shape and in Portsmouth my work mates have been throttle to unusable levels.
Sent from my position in this ever expanding universe.
Virgin Media. "We oversubscribe our services then traffic shape the hell out of your connection because, let's face it, those islands don't pay for themselves." :lmfao:

Ha ha.
I agree completely with Tutonic on this. I'm lucky that I live in an area that originally was very heavily targeted by Sky and was served by one of the worst cable companies back when the UK was franchised off to lots of regional suppliers. So there are many Sky customers and not many Virgin Media customers. As long as there is never a need to contact VM about anything (and I don't use them for TV) they're pretty decent here.
