I don't understand it but need to.

Is there anyone who knows all about it, how it works and how you find people you want to find who could give me a quick 101 on it at some stage?

TY

Four types of Twitter user as far as I can see.
1. People who uses it as a mini Facebook to stay in touch with a group of friends. Everyone follows everyone else.

2. Celebrities, sports people, politicians, brands, companies who use it to communicate with large numbers of followers who they do not follow in return. i.e. Lady Gaga has 20 million followers but follows almost no one herself.

3. People like me who follow interesting people or companies i.e. I follow Adobe, Nikon, Simon Pegg, Prof. Brian Cox etc but no one follows me. I use it as a mini news feed from these people. Some post links to interesting stuff on the web, others talk about their work, companies update me with new products, training, howto's etc. They follow lots of people but no one much follows them.

4. Social activists who use Twitter to speak out about injustices such as the protesters in Syria, Chinese activists etc. They follow a lot of people and are followed a lot themselves through being found with hashtags.

What's a hashtag? (https://support.twitter.com/articles/49309)

I guess you'd be interested in brand awareness? Twitter might work as a Micro Blog with updates about what's going on with a certain company. I'm very far from an expert but I guess it would work much like a news page on a web site. Regular, interesting updates that their customer or client might want to read. I've read a few articles about how difficult it is to get traction with Twitter if you're not a celebrity i.e. the Ford Motor Company has 116,000 followers while Tom Hanks has 3.7 million.

follow an eclectic bunch is my recipe.
follow your interests (politics, sport, entertainment, work etc.)
I'm guessing that you're having to do this for work, and I know you are Savvy, but if you do it wrong, Twitter can make you/your company cry.
add me (@BluntOMFG) for random nonsense

Edit: just thought of an example; I have been following the Leveson inquiry and looking at the hashtag #Leveson has given me a greater understanding of the subject.
eg. people post links to blogs & news articles that you would never see otherwise. I'm now on 1st name terms with him. He's called Brian.
Also, news seems to travel faster via Twitter, you get to hear things before they are on the bbc.

Must follows are: [h=2]@GaryLineker & @piersmorgan (https://twitter.com/#!/piersmorgan) they have epic squabbles, @DaveGorman, @Stancollymore, @omid9, @pundamentalism[/h]

Thanks for the replies.

It's purely for work and whether it should form part of an integrated new online media strategy.

A couple of people have offered to take me through it at the LAN which is great.

It's just I know little about it but have heard of enough horror stories that companies have wished they'd never started with it....

My only concern is that it might dilute this website and forum if people get access to our content (events raid achievements etc) . Also the Facebook Page never really caught on. Was the idea to drive new people to our sites or as another way for us to share official Community information?

I would hold off .... On the face of it its a simple and helpful thing to do and setup. The problem being it would need moderating and I am sure the powers that be have enough to do keeping this monster running
