Just curious as to how many use Headpones and how many use speakers :)
I don't know how many people here will agree with me, but I have always found that when playing CS wearing a pair of headphones gives you an advantage over those people listening via speakers (unless of course you got a mega setup and yer wife/mum/girlfriend doesn't mind loads of gunfire whilst trying to watch the telly :D ), I have always found that with a pair of headphones it is so much easier to recognise the direction of footsteps etc.
I can't remember how many times I've been watching someone in first person view and you hear the footsteps coming from one direction and the guy is looking somewhere completely different.
Mind you there have been times when I've been called a cheat because I've heard someone before the've come round a corner and been sat there looking right at the point where they are gonna appear, even been called a WH'er because I've tracked footsteps on the other side of a wall and got the shots off as the guy comes into sight.
Personnally I always have and always will use headphones when I play CS cause I need any edge I can get
Headphones. The ears ability to track and position sound is amazing and headphones do give an edge. It also stops voice feedback when talking!
yes i agree... i went back to speakers the other day and couldnt play at all because im used to Headpones... but i find it hard to work direction of footsteps when there on top of me (like in aztec)... and it sounds better all together
i use both, more often headphones, but when im on a public server, every 1 just runs round like headless chickens ne way so its no use. i need sum new headphones ne way as my mic has just broke.
I always use headset. You get a better 3D sound perspective with headsets in comparison to speakers. Also you don't have the microphone issue.
I have a headset from Trust that is really good.
Get mor info at:

Then go to products -> sound -> headsets
do any of u use suround sound speakers? i dont know if cs supports suround sound?
I have done, and yes it does.
ditto, it sounds great but I still use headphones.
Mmmm...surround sound speakers rock. 8)
There's nothing like feeling that base as a grenade goes off just feet from your character, might be wrong but you just dont get that from some headphones.
surround sound is not as good as headsets but still good...
Pfff...be quiet infidel.
WHAT???
 Gotta be speakers mmm...SB Audigy,Creative labs inspire 5300's 5.1 full fat surround sound and the volume button goes upto 11  (only cos i managed to comandeer the spare room as a den Mwu-HAHA!)
The Missus has ordered me to say Head set is best :)
Speakers are def better (if you have 4 or 5 point) as you can tell if someone is coming front-left, front-right, rear-left or rear-right rather than if you use headphones because u only know if it is left or right...
not so! I used to use 5 point surround sound speakers and then switched to headphones and I find that I can track sound much more accurately with headphones than I ever could with the speakers.
What you must make sure is that your sound card is told you're only using headphones (I have an audigy, and it senses when I plug them in so it will mute the speakers and switch to headphone mode) If you don't so this then I guess your soundcard is only pumping l - r channel info to your headphones because it thinks you have rear speakers connected.

I have to agree.. your missus's head is the best :P

Hehe I know what you mean, plus she won't let me buy some nice 5.1's :(
yeah im an earphones man myself, though not a very good one i put the earphones on back to front once when it was me and a T left.... needless to say it was a tad embarassing when i thought i heard footsteps from behind me, and turned as i rounded a corner. Lucky for the remaining T he was met with a stupid crouching guy facing entirely the wrong way....ho hum. at least this shows that headphones are better for pinpointing noise , if you put them on the right way of course :)
Use headphones that way you can hear were the enemy is coming from and that way you have a comm as well. And so you dont piss everyone else in the house off with annoying high pitch comm voices...
QuoteUse headphones that way you can hear were the enemy is coming from
Only if all the other team members aren't chuntering to each other, while you've got your ear pressed up against the wall, trying to HEAR WHAT'S GOING ON!
Quotedo any of u use suround sound speakers? i dont know if cs supports suround sound?
CS since 1.3 (i think) has supported Creatives EAX surround and the Aureal A3D surround.
I use Cambridge soundworks 6.1 speakers for CS and I personally find them very good especially the Y axis directional audio...
Can always tell someone above me or below... The only time they didn't work properly was actually playing against dMw in a clan match. I had a power cut halfway through the match and then had to rejoin with my speakers and everything set to default as all the tweaking is done via an amplifier electronically :( They could have at least put a settings memory chip in it...
